Isn't it about time we ditched this New Year/new me/diet rubbish

I get sick of it every January and in 2018 the whole thing just seems really stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for healthy eating/exercise/wanting to make positive changes to our lives. But all the advertising on tv about getting fit this new year followed by weigh watchers adverts in January and shops going mad on "healthy" ready meals and diet foods in your face is getting on my nerves.

Then when the fad of New Year wears off everyone goes back to normal. In 2018 this just seems really silly!

If people are really wanting to do changes in their lives with diets/exercise and good habits, why buy into the advertising of New Year/New You which is designed to fail after a weeks. Especially in cold, dreary January where you're most likely to feel unmotivated.

When I needed to lose weight I started in spring when it was getting warmer, lighter and I was more likely to feel happier and motivated.

Bit of a rant yes but I'm just so sick of the same old January bullshit of fad diets, failed resolutions and shops being full of the same old health fads every year!

I don't really think the adverts are the problem. If people are silly enough to buy products/gym memberships they won't use then more fool them! Companies know it's a good way to advertise their products at this time of year.

Yes and bloody 'detoxing'. That's what our kidneys, liver and blood are for. Ffs.

SugarPlumFerry · 08/01/2018 18:32

Agree with Cheese.

I resemble an overstuffed sausage after the whole of Decembermas and totally ready to start treating myself well. It's only natural for companies to ramp up the advertising when it is most likely to be successful. I hate the diet industry too though and will be doing calories in

January is far enough away from holidays to give you a decent shot at getting a bikini body. I’ve got 4 stone to lose and 2lb a week will get me where I want to be before I go on my first holiday.

If I wait till spring I’ll still be obese on the beach, again.

AintNoOtherFan · 08/01/2018 18:45

Surely though if someone over indulges over Christmas and feels bloated/pounds gained then when life resumes to normal again after Christmas their body will go back to normal when they resume their normal eating/activity habits that they have the rest of the year? You might feel a bit tighter around the waist line but presuming your diet goes back to normal then so will your body (I'm not talking about people who struggle with their weight long term, only those who have over indulged during the festive season and have a regular diet/figure normally. In which case they don't need to diet.)

Sorry but the phrase "bikini body" is another one that makes my teeth itch a, when youve been ten stone overweight as i have its never going to happen unless you have loose skin surgically removed. b. i eat for health not to fit in a bikini. Im not a lover of the beach and havent been on holiday since 1993. If i was to go on a holiday id rather sightsee and have a good old snoop around.

AintNoOtherFan · 08/01/2018 19:06

"Bikini body" also makes my teeth itch too! I'm a size 10 top/12 bottom and wouldn't be seen dead in a bikini because I have a wobbly tummy and am white as ghost (fair skin.)

YANBU, OP. So much to say on this but I won’t go there. Except for, if I see another Slimming World anything I’ll boil my own head. It’s all a fucking fad but kudos to the 5% of dieters that keep the weight off

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 19:25

Ive kept 95% of it off Dozy but its a constant struggle.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2018 19:30

I love a new year detox and diet and it doesn't cost me anything, plus I find it easier when lots of other people are doing it too. Not everyone is a victim of marketing; sometimes after a few weeks of excess, socialising, rich food, late nights and too much alcohol, it's nice to have a strict month. Dh and I are both doing a dry January, he's eating more fruit and veg, me and the kids are going sugar free, we're exercising more as a family and everyone is already sleeping better and feeling more energetic. I personally focus better and feel more motivated if I have a set 'thing' rather than just 'generally eat better, drink less, move more' even though they amount to the same thing.

Dozyoldtwonk · 08/01/2018 19:34

Congrats @Helena Smile

Slimming World in particular grinds my gears as I know many who go to group on plan, lose weight, stop group off plan, gain weight back. Rinse, repeat. Maybe SW doesn’t teach enough about long term habits and nutrition and exercise and all that stuff. I don’t know. I just know that I’m January in particular lots of people I know are ‘rejoining’ (in some cases to lose the weight they lost in the first place) and there’s media guff / literature about them everywhere. Probably an unfair assessment, but hey.

You can't get angry about this, you may as well fight windmills Grin

It's the cycle of life/diets/self delusion Wink

Humans being human and all that

HelenaDove · 08/01/2018 20:32

Dozy i learnt a long time ago that a lot of so called low syn food recommended by SW is high in sugar. So when people finish the weight loss plan and go on the maintanance plan they do end up gaining.

e.g sainsburys low fat greek yogurt...............13 grams of sugar
their full fat greek yogurt 5g of sugar. both per 100g

MumMoselle · 10/01/2018 23:55

I haven't made any changes for January. I've been losing weight with SW since mid 2017 and eating healthier, more aware of what I eat and drink. No fad diet.
I have never successfully lost weight before, but am losing now. I don't like artificial sweeteners so try to avoid the yoghurts etc. I believe that I have relearned what I can eat healthily and keep up the exercise with walking our dog .
I have stuck to it as I am not going to ruin the work I have put in so far. Half a stone to go to target!
