Bit of background We live in smallish house. 5 of us , 3 big teenagers, me and dh.Lots of washing as you can imagine. Husband has practical outside job, kids all Into out door activities. No tumble dryer and not getting one. Washing drys on radiators and airers at this time of year. Here's the problem Dh has an obsession with putting the airer in our bedroom. I hate with a passion having damp washing in our bedroom but he can't see the problem
Bedrooms should be a place to relax not be surrounded by wet clothing. I should add our room is really warm so does dry well but I really hate it. I set it up In the dining room. But he hates it been visible. Who is being unreasonable?

OMG both of you for not buying a tumble dryer. Sort it out!

PinkSnowAndStars · 07/01/2018 23:15

Get a Lakeland heated airer.

Best. Invention. Ever!

violetbunny · 08/01/2018 05:47

Get a tumble drier. You don't have to use it for everything - we mainly use ours for bulky stuff like sheets and towels. That already cuts down a lot of the space we need to air-dry the rest.

BashStreetKid · 08/01/2018 06:42

With teenagers in the house you're right not to have a tumble dryer, especially given you have an airer. We used to find the kids were constantly running it just for one-off items. When ours broke we didn't replace it and the bills plummeted. And, contrary to what's said on here, we don't have condensation problems.

Ariela · 10/01/2018 14:06

Lakeland Heated Airer is a quick drying solution.

Or get solar and a tumble drier - I confess to only using my tumble drier when the sun is shining and I cba to hang out the smalls. I have often confused people by saying something along the lines of the sun is shining so I've got to put the tumble drier on!

Qvar · 10/01/2018 14:08

You’re both being absurd, get a tumble dryer

WhatIWant · 10/01/2018 14:29

Id just get a dryer. 🤷🏻‍♀️

happymummy12345 · 10/01/2018 14:31

Ours used to go in the bathroom, but it was taking so long to dry. It now goes in the bedroom. It dries so much quicker.
I hate tumble dryers and I'd never ever have one.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 10/01/2018 14:33

I'd say whoever washes it and dries it gets to choose where it gets dried.

Equal division of labour, equal compromise.

Bluelady · 10/01/2018 14:36

What's the objection to a tumble dryer? How on earth do you dry bed linen and bath sheets?

Bowerbird5 · 10/01/2018 14:39

Can you stick it in the kitchen overnight? I hate it in the bedroom. Mine is in the hall but it shouldn't be as in front of an exit. I have suggested we have a utility in the shed but it falls on deaf ears at present DH😠

Lovemusic33 · 10/01/2018 14:43

Get a tumble dryer, I gave in and bought one just over a year ago and I love it, saves ironing too if you fold things as soon as they come out. I had to rearrange my kitchen to fit one in but it was worth it, would be lost without it now.

BigBaboonBum · 10/01/2018 14:46

Buy a condenser dryer imo. Stick it ontop of something if need be. But you said you wouldn’t so all I have to say is I think you’re superwoman for having the patience for all that drying with so many people! I couldn’t do it for two children + me when my dryer broke 😱😱😱😱😱😱

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 14:47

Dryers really aren’t expensive to run.

If you’re taking out cupboards in the utility you might as well put one in. Or a washer/dryer to save space.

I think people just get blocks about things.

RhiannonOHara · 10/01/2018 14:55

For some reason, not entirely logical I suspect, I find clothes drying in a living area less studenty/bed-sitty than in a bedroom, so I'm with you, OP. But then again I have a large living area, so if we're all in the living room the washing can be in the kitchen/dining area out of sight, and if we're sitting at the table to eat and/or have people round for dinner, we can move it into the other half of the living area.

I also have an overhead airer that has, no exaggeration, changed my life! But, again, I have an upstairs hallway with a high Victorian ceiling, which is perfect for it (loads of vertical space and it's so airy that things dry overnight); I appreciate if your house has lower ceilings or less hallway space the airer might not be so ideal.

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 14:58

I have an overhead airer in addition to a dryer but they’re no replacement.

Elephant17 · 10/01/2018 14:58

I wouldn't mind either way. I love the way fresh washing fills the room with that lovely clean clothes smell!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/01/2018 15:25

I would never dry washing in a bedroom.

I have a friends whose DS developed asthma at Uni and this was one of the triggers...

mirime · 10/01/2018 15:37

We have no room for a dryer, even if we wanted one. Clothes horse is in the bathroom and we have a dehumidifier.

If it wasn't in the bathroom it would be in the dining room, unless, obviously we were actually using it as a dining room rather than a hobbies room. I wouldn't have a clothes horse in my bedroom.

And I'm really not bothered if people see the washing. A clothes line in the garden is hardly private.

EnidButton · 10/01/2018 16:30

You're just being stubborn about the tumble drier. You've decided you can do without one and they're a waste of money so you're not budging. Even ignoring the posts about them.

It's a bit daft. If you have the room, and can afford the initial expense of one (although they're not that expensive if you get a basic one with no frills), then it makes the most sense rather than shuffling wet clothes around the house. All your bedding must take days to do.

Beaniebeemer · 11/01/2018 18:41

I’ve got two young kids and a partner and a small house. I’ve started going to a laundrette. I have one close by luckily. I took a load down earlier and about 6 towels. £3 and half an hour later it was all dry. It is a bit time consuming but it sorts it all out in one swoop!

BashStreetKid · 11/01/2018 21:03

Tumble dryers do cost a lot in electricity, so OP definitely has a point about not having one.

TrinitySquirrel · 11/01/2018 21:19

@bashstreetkid no, they do not. It's not 1992 anymore.

A tumblr drier for a 35 minute rapid dry costs far less than having the extra heating on for about 12hrs. Don't be silly.

BashStreetKid · 11/01/2018 23:13

TrinitySquirrel: who says they have to have "extra heating" on? You just use the radiators that are on anyway for, um, heating the house - when you can't dry outside.. Don't be silly.

Inertia · 13/01/2018 11:11

If you would otherwise iron laundry that tumble drying eliminates the need for, then it probably isn't much more expensive to tumble dry. Our dryer and iron have similar power ratings, and it takes about the same time to tumble a load as it would to iron it, therefore the energy cost is about the same.
