to ask how to clean limescale of toilet?!

JollyGiraffe · 07/01/2018 15:27

I live in an area with very hard water and the toilet is full of lovely limescale, despite cleaning it regularly.

I've tried scrubbing it with a bit of bleach but no luck.

I hear vinegar is supposed to be good? If so, what type of vinegar? I'm guessing not balsamic Wink

Or does anyone have any other helpful tips or products?

Viacal
Your friend forever in hard water areas

JollyGiraffe · 07/01/2018 15:28

It's all underneath the water line, with just a bit at the back where the water comes down when you flush

Just plain white vinegar. About 70p.
If that doesn't work try cheap cola. Leave it overnight.

usedtogotomars · 07/01/2018 15:29

I had this. I used loads of limescale remover tablets (these) and left overnight then scrubbed with a toilet brush and it got rid.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 07/01/2018 15:29

When you go to bed at night, pour an entire bottle of bleach down and leave it til morning? Also possible while you are at work all day? X

Mouikey · 07/01/2018 15:31

If your happy to remove the water, use white vinegar and baking powder, make a paste and put it over the limescale... leave it for a few hours and clean off.

I've also used cheap cola... would never drink the stuff given how shiny it makes my loo!!

Merryoldgoat · 07/01/2018 15:31

I use Harpic - clean loo with bleach, flush it away a few times. Then lots of harpic under the rim and let it drip down and then squirt a load into the bowl. Leave for a good hour. Then scrub and flush. That every few days will get it looking good.

LakieLady · 07/01/2018 15:32

Viakal to get rid, Harpic Power Plus every other day to keep it bay.

If it's so severe that Viakal isn't effective, go to a plumber's or builder's merchants and get some One Shot, but be very, very careful when using it. It's strong acid.

Brilliant on limescale and blocked drains though.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/01/2018 15:33

Domestic limescale cleaner worked wonders. Was surprised

MaggieS41 · 07/01/2018 15:34

Best way is to drain the water from the toilet and shut the water off from the valve. Then put baking soda and pour vinegar in it. Leave it for a bit - maybe an hour - then start scrubbing! I read this somewhere - haven’t tried it as we have one of those stupid loos that is built in so can’t get to the valve easily!

Peekaboo3 · 07/01/2018 15:36

Ditto white vinegar.

rcit · 07/01/2018 15:36

Harpic liquid left overnight

That will take most off once you toilet brush it.

Then take Durgol and soak some kitchen roll in it and place it over any area not clear of limescale. Scrub with toilet brush.

gamerchick · 07/01/2018 15:36

Bleach doesn’t remove limescale just like bleach doesn’t clean. It’s a waste of time and bleach.

A good limescale remover and daily scrubbing. Once it’s all off pop a couple of denture tablets down the pan before bed each night to try starve it off.

Cornettoninja · 07/01/2018 15:37

You can use white vinegar but depending on how bad it is you may need to get hardcore chemicals on it. There's loads of limescale specific loo cleaners but if you need a good maintenance clean you need to tie a carrier bag over a mop head to push all the water over the damn round the ubend then leave the loo cleaner on for a bit before scrubbing.

Bleach will do bugger all except give you whiter limescale. Save it for the mop that you've just stuck in the toilet.

thelastredwinegum · 07/01/2018 15:37

Bleach doesn't get rid of limescale.
Viakal is fantastic on taps, I haven't tried on the toilet as I use harpic or mr muscle limescale which has stopped it building up.

Cornettoninja · 07/01/2018 15:37

Damn = dam

Huntinginthedark · 07/01/2018 15:38

Viakal is my saviour
Get the liquid
Shove a whole bottle in
Leave it for a couple of hours. Give it the barest of scrubs with a toilet brush (I know not allowed on mn)

lidoshuffle · 07/01/2018 15:38

Vanish powder (or Lidl equivalent) overnight will get all the staining off.

IrkThePurist · 07/01/2018 15:48

Anything acidic will do it such as citric acid crystals or white vinegar. Leave them in overnight.
Bleach will only bleach it white. Acid will dissolve it. Do what Cornettoninja said and empty the water out first.

If its really bad soak it overnight, flush, then get in there with something plastic and sharp, and scrape it off.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/01/2018 15:50

I did it with tablet. Word of warning - it may have eroded the enamel underneath and you'll end up with a brown patch.

c3pu · 07/01/2018 15:50

Push the water out a bit with a bog brush, then apply a liberal dose of harpic power plus.

Leave it for an hour, brush and flush.

Do this until it's gone. After that, once a week ought to keep it at bay.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2018 15:52

Watching this with interest. The only problem I have is I can’t leave anything down overnight as we only have one loo!

paxillin · 07/01/2018 15:55

You can scrape it off with a wooden spatula or a chopstick. I had to do this after using coke to "remove" limescale. It left all the limescale intact, but brown.

mummmy2017 · 07/01/2018 15:55

I have to do ours all the time, I chuck it down when we go out the door and flush and scrub when we come home

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/01/2018 15:57

Sainsbury’s own brand limescale remover is the best I’ve ever found. Just about to do the shower with it!
