and does not follow up, isn't that an indication that that person is ending the conversation?

I think we need more context than this...

RavingRoo · 05/01/2018 11:53

Via email or other electronic conversation? Yes

It really depends on the context, but yes, it can mark the end of the conversation.

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 05/01/2018 12:13

I was chatting with an authentication service, following up on my order (they reply quicker via FB). I know from experience that they take a long time to deliver a result, but they're the most reputable. And time is of the essence for this particular order.

I mentioned thank you for the help. Then the one managing the FB page said something that I thought warranted my response. They said they work on UK time. I thought I needed to explain that the deadline is Australia time. Because during previous conversation, they told me their office is closed on weekends. So my deadline which is Monday is actually their Sunday, but they're closed. I thought that's important to point out.

They said "Please allow me the opportunities to attend to my files rather than re rub the same conversations"

I said thank you again. Then they said something again. I said thank you again.

Then they said "Please allow me to deal with my files right now I am answering you whilst I could be reviewing"

I'm confused. lol.

Ha ha sounds super awkward. Oh well, just respond with a 👍 In future. That's the definitive end to such conversations imho.

Well it sounded like they thought they hadn't finished helping you. You normally know when those type of web chat exchanges are finished because the agent will sum up and ask if there is anything else they can help you with. If you were done and didn't need anything else from them you could have made that more clear.

Eliza9917 · 05/01/2018 13:09

If its a business page they have to respond otherwise its marked against them regarding their response rates.

RavingRoo · 05/01/2018 14:16

A lot of Australian businesses with foreign customers use Asian virtual Pa services to maintain their websites. They have to reply to each message and within certain timescales too or they might not get paid.

Idontdowindows · 05/01/2018 14:47

Is it me, or were they a bit rude as well? I'd have gone "yes, I am reviewing your files now and have all the information I need, thank you :)"

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 05/01/2018 19:27

IdontdoWindows

Yeah, found them rude too.

It’s a UK service, not australian. And apparently I was talking to the owner.

But in that case, they usually ask “is there anything else I can help you with” right?

Not their reply to me lololol

ScreamingValenta · 05/01/2018 19:30

It sounds like a poor translation of something to me. I know the company is in the UK but could this service be outsourced offshore?

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 05/01/2018 19:36

ScreamingValenta

The one who manages the FB page is the owner. It's not a big company.

ScreamingValenta · 05/01/2018 19:40

Ah, OK. It's just that Please allow me the opportunities to attend to my files rather than re rub the same conversations" seems strange phrasing for a human English speaker, and sounds bot-like. I have never heard the phrase 're rub' in that context - but perhaps that's just me.

Ikanon · 05/01/2018 19:59

The business has to have the last word or FB marks your response time down wankers

I usually follow up with 'you're welcome'. Little reason for comeback whilst ending on a polite note.

MozTheMonster · 05/01/2018 20:02

Sorry... I mis-read!!!!

I read:

They said "Please allow me the opportunities to attend to my FLIES rather than re rub the same conversations"

TheTasteOfInk · 05/01/2018 20:15

What an odd conversation.

I'd assume from that they were telling me to stfu for a minute to give them peace to check my query.

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 05/01/2018 20:16

Ikanon

I understand that, but the tone seems off. lol.

So they messaged this morning, and I made sure to end the conversation with a like sign like you said. lol True enough, they didn't reply afterwards.

Will keep that in mind!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/01/2018 20:34

I was only talking about this about a few minutes ago. Email sign offs quickly became "Kind regards" so I'm surprised conversations such as this and webchats haven't developed a way of ending that doesn't end with "you hang up" "no YOU hang up" etc.

Postagestamppat · 05/01/2018 20:39

It sounds like a bot because of the repetition of the awkward phrasing. There is no need to worry about politeness or the normal rules of conversation. You were probably communicating with a computer program.
