When chatting, if someone says "thanks"

and does not follow up, isn't that an indication that that person is ending the conversation?

I understand your point and I can see where it's coming from (I'm in IT), but I am definitely sure it is a real person :)

They told you that they were going to look into something, you replied thank you. (As in 'thanks, I'll await your response when you've done just that').
Not sure why they then went in to repeat the same thing over again.
Weird. (Them, not you!)
