To think I've totally fucked my metabolism

Fatbadger · 04/01/2018 22:32

For reference I'm 12 stone 11 and 5ft 3inch so considered "obese" on the BMI

January 2016 I decided to do something about my weight and lost 3 stone in about 6 months by healthy eating and exercise. I then had a car accident which meant I couldn't exercise for months, became very down and slowly piled the weight back on.

I'm now fully healed and want to lose the weight again as I'm miserable and feel awful. I mentioned it to a colleague that I've started up a diet and she laughed. I asked what was so funny and she said that I will find it harder to lose weight this time as yo yo dieting does that to your body and don't expect fantastic results I had last time.

I now feel so unmotivated. AIBU to feel I've ruined my metabolism? Or is she talking bollocks?

Sounds like someone wants you to fail!

Utter tosh by the way. Good luck with your diet, you'll do fine because you already know the ropes.

acatcalledjohn · 04/01/2018 22:34

She sounds like a dick. Ignore her.

Good luck. You can do this! Smile

scrabbler3 · 04/01/2018 22:37

I've no idea how metabolism works and I doubt your "friend" has either. She's a nasty piece of work.

Talk to your GP or practice nurse if you're worried. Good luck!

RavingRoo · 04/01/2018 22:38

Your weight gain had nothing to do with your metabolism (if you had a metabolic disorder you probably wouldn’t have lost the weight in the first place).

KakunaRattata · 04/01/2018 22:38

Yes, years of yoyo dieting fucks up your metabolism, but you're not a dieter, you changed your lifestyle and got fitter and healthier, big difference to eating low calorie diet 'food' as sold by the big diet companies and starving your body of real nutrients.

Fatbadger · 04/01/2018 22:39

You are right, she is a dick. This is the same person that laughed when our other colleague who is a size 22 said that's going on a diet and wants to get down to a size 18 - she literally laughed in her face and said she would be horrified to be a size 18 Hmm

That really is rubbish! And it’s an excuse for people that normally don’t have the willpower to lose weight “oh my metabolism doesn’t work anymore as I diet a lot”

What is a ‘diet’ anyway just a way of eating, you could call anyway you eat a sodding diet.

I’m am currently losing weight for the 3rd time in just a few years due to pregnancies close together and it’s coming off no problem.

Your be grand OP, come and join us on the Boxing Day diet thread in weight loss we are friendly Smile

Somerford · 04/01/2018 22:41

It's hardly yo-yo dieting. You've lost the weight once, put it back on due to inactivity and now you want to lose it again. It doesn't sound like you've gone up and down from one extreme to the other again and again. You can do it. You'll always find someone looking to knock you when you're trying to do something good for yourself, they usually do it because they are insecure and they like to see other people fail and feel miserable about it. Use her for inspiration and when you've got to the weight you are aspiring towards, take great pleasure in telling her that her words helped you to achieve it.

Whiterabbitears · 04/01/2018 22:41

She's being horrible and negative and wants you to fail. You did it before you can do it again if you want to. Good luck OP.

Scarydinosaurs · 04/01/2018 22:46

Absolutely not true. Quickly on, quickly off.

Best of luck!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 04/01/2018 22:46

What a cow.

Reflexella · 04/01/2018 22:47

What a nasty little madam.

Pippa12 · 04/01/2018 22:52

Jealous horror of a woman! Hold your motivated head high... she will be laughing on the otherside of her face when your metabolism kicks in perfectly fine and the weight drops off and stays off! Good luck!

Sexykitten2005 · 04/01/2018 22:52

It is true that years of yo-yo dieting can mess with the way your body stores fuel. If you body gets used to very low levels of energy coming in (famine) it can react by storing fat quicker and lowering your metabolism. But by years of yo-yo dieting I mean Cambridge one month, cabbage soup the next, then Atkins, then carol in accounts lost a shit load eating only eggs and yoghurt.
You didn’t do that, you changed your lifestyle and developed healthy eating habits and activity levels, your body will bounce back fine.

Rebeccaslicker · 04/01/2018 22:56

You'll be fine with healthy eating and healthy exercise.

But no matter what you do, your colleague will still be a rude self centred bollocks talking arsehole!

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 04/01/2018 22:57

I did 8 years of diets - yo yo etc. Obsessed about food. Then I moved out of home, started running and I lost a stone and a half with no diet whatsoever. I just started to eat...a bit less. But i felt satisfied. The running helped massively.
It's been 10 years since I lost that 1.5 stone and my weight has more or less stayed the same give or take a couple of kilos.
Basically...I got my metabolism normal again. So can you. I would strongly advise against doing diets though.

eastlondoner · 04/01/2018 23:03

She's being a dick!

If it helps, I actually do have a messed up metabolism (no working thyroid) but when I move more and eat less than usual I still lose weight.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2018 23:05

Fatbadger, your colleague is a twat.
You've lost the weight once and you can lose it again.
Hope you are fully recovered from your accident and best wishes for the new year.

April229 · 04/01/2018 23:08

Nonsense OP. You know you can do this, you did it before and nailed it. Crack on. Shame there isn’t a diet that would make her a nice person.....

sausagerollsrock · 04/01/2018 23:11

I'm a fully fledged yo yo dieter and I can lose weight exactly the same as I always have.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 04/01/2018 23:15

You’ll lose that weight just fine, and every time you’re tempted by a naughty little calorific treat, just imagine your friends face when you’re back at 8 stone. She is just willing you to fail. Disappoint her.

LadyLapsang · 04/01/2018 23:16

I think many people who diet end up putting the weight back on, especially those that follow plans that use diet food / milkshakes etc.I think healthy permanent changes are the way to go for long term changes although I don't think there is anything with wrong with kick starting changes.

dingdongdigeridoo · 04/01/2018 23:20

Should have come back with ‘oh? Is that what happened to you?’ Then look at her all concerned.

StrangeLookingParasite · 04/01/2018 23:25

she literally laughed in her face and said she would be horrified to be a size 18

Wow, she sounds like a real prize. Hmm

starzig · 04/01/2018 23:29

Nasty b-atch. Just ignore her, when is a diet saboteur. You can do it.
