they said that someone must have come in from outside when no one was looking and stolen it straight off the dining room table, whilst i was on the school run!! does that sound likely?

Are you sure the camera was sat on the table before you left?

Usually workmen rely on their reputation to get other jobs so would really doubt they would be so careless as to steal from a house when left alone.... it's a tough one though!

nally · 24/04/2007 23:38

whoever this 'outside' person is they are referring to, did not bother to take my video camera, mobile phone, dh's games console and games, cash and countless other as easy things to steal... seems unlikely to me that a complete stranger would assume that there was no one in my house and randomly decide to take their chances to walk in and take something off the table.

We had to 'reclaim' quite a few items from the guys doing our loft conversion. However, they were much more blatant, and were using some of DP's tools, and his expensive (but old) diving gear bag to store their tools in. They just helped themselves whilst moving stuff out of our loft to start work!!!!

So, every few nights, DP did a recce, and made a list, and then slowly started reclaiming our stuff back

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/04/2007 23:39

Tell them you have called the police and the police will be stopping by to ask them for witness statements

nally · 24/04/2007 23:40

definitely was there. i use my camera everyday and just before i left for the school run i saw the camera on the table and thought "maybe i should put that away, seeing as there are workmen around". Then I felt ashamed and told myself to not be stupid. So I told them I was going out for about 20 mins. When I came home, lo and behold, it was gone!

I spoke to the fella who owns the company that employs them. His immediate reaction was to tell me to phone the police, but as the plasterers had already left the site, he said it was probably pointless, so just offered to pay me for the loss and to take it out of their wages.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/04/2007 23:44

accept it nally.

SNOWBall4girlz · 24/04/2007 23:46

wow

that is a bit complacent of the boss

does that mean he is assuming they took it and does that mean it has happened before?
maybe he is just protecting his own reputation and will not use those plasterers again
is a sorry state of affairs when you cannot trust people

NotanOtter · 24/04/2007 23:47

yeah our builders nabbed so much of our stuff
childrens tent, huge scythe ,saws etc etc etc nightmare

nally · 24/04/2007 23:47

Basically what happened was that when I got back from the school run I noticed straight away that the camera was gone. I went up to the loft to ask if they had needed to move it for any reason because it was no longer on the table. The head/chief plasterer (what do you call them?) said it had nothing to do with them, then came up with his theory about the outsider. Then he asked me if we could keep this between us and that he would pay me for the camera and can I pleeease (he said please about a dozen times) not tell the boss. When I told him how much the camera was worth he said that I must be joking and that he would not be paying for it after all. So that's when I phoned the boss.

nally · 24/04/2007 23:50

Yeah, his boss has told him that he won't be employing him again. If the 'outsider' does exist then I feel sorry for the plasterer, but if he doesn't, well he deserves it imo.

OP posts:
SNOWBall4girlz · 24/04/2007 23:50

that is so out of order
I think you did the right thing though telling the boss
you should not be out of pocket
are the plasterers due again? hope not

nally · 24/04/2007 23:52

they are coming back to finish the job. apparently there aren't any other available plasterers around at the moment, so i could have to wait weeks for someone else

OP posts:
nally · 24/04/2007 23:53

a friend of mine suggested i get someone else in to do it and pay them instead.

OP posts:
nally · 24/04/2007 23:55

can that be done though as i have a contract with the company?

OP posts:
Incodnito · 24/04/2007 23:57

theres no way in hell i would be letting them into my house again

PrettyLittleHead · 24/04/2007 23:58

i think you should do what vvv suggested.

SparklyGothKat · 24/04/2007 23:58

he did it! Otherwise why offer to pay for it and when you said how much it was worth he decided not to, properably thought it was only a cheapy one and he could get away with it for you.

nally · 24/04/2007 23:58

Hi cod. Shall I just tell them to shove it up their ... ?
