I genuinely don't know. Was a bit disappointed

Very much enjoying Bertrand's contributions to this thread.

You're being perfectly sensible Stealth, I'm surprised at some of the responses you've got.

That would only apply if there were leaflets for some mythical organisation that threatens women with all sorts of physical, psychological and spiriual harm if they don't have abortions. Pro life and pro choice are not two sides of the same coin.

I agree with this.
Nobody is pro-abortion as strongly as people are anti-abortion but that is still be what the opposite would be.

BertrandRussell · 04/01/2018 21:13

“Spuc provides real support to women who want to keep their babies but cannot afford all the equipment. How is that anti-women?”

I don’t think anyone ever had an abortion because they couldn’t “afford all the equipment”........

StealthPolarBear · 04/01/2018 21:13

"You'd extend the right to free speech to a table?"
Can we elect it US president?

(I am quite pro-abortion TBH but I still believe that each individual should be allowed to make the choice that is right for them at that particular time in those particular circumstances)

Duckyneedsaclean · 04/01/2018 21:14

BertrandRussell If you think no one has had an abortion because of financial concerns you are sorely mistaken.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/01/2018 21:16

what do SPUC do when the baby is 2? 12? 16? babies need more than a few bits for the first few months

I've never met a pro-lifer who gave a shit past birth

Mumof56 · 04/01/2018 21:17

Hmm Many people have had abortions for financial reasons. It's not the actual baby you have to buy...

LineysRunes · 04/01/2018 21:20

The financial reasons are systemic and embedded and organisations like spuc don't like to change those systemic, embedded structures.

Duckyneedsaclean · 04/01/2018 21:20

ghostyslovesheets I've never met a pro-lifer who didn't give a shit post birth. SPUC and other charities form long term relationships with those they come into contact with.

BertrandRussell · 04/01/2018 21:20

“BertrandRussell If you think no one has had an abortion because of financial concerns you are sorely mistaken“

Of course they have. But not because they couldn’t afford “all the equipment”.

Because they could not support themselves and a baby for the next 16 years. A tab which SPUC does not pick up.

Duckyneedsaclean · 04/01/2018 21:21

What on earth are you talking about?

BertrandRussell · 04/01/2018 21:22

“Spuc provides real support to women who want to keep their babies but cannot afford all the equipment”

To quote ducky.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/01/2018 21:22

do they really - financially supportive life long relationships? how lovely

I've really only met SPUC and LIFE members when being spat on and verbally abused so it's nice to know they have such soft fluffy interiors

LineysRunes · 04/01/2018 21:23

Ducky, you don't agree that terminations should be available to women. I get that. Don't dress up spuc-u-like as anything other than it is.

Coconutspongexo · 04/01/2018 21:24

So do SPUC provide some sort of child maintenance people aren’t aware of?

Trills · 04/01/2018 21:25

If anyone really wants to reduce the number of abortions that happen they should be campaigning for better sex education, free contraception, free and easily available emergency contraception, free medical care, paid maternity and paternity leave, subsidised (or free) childcare, protected flexible working arrangements for everyone, and better benefits for parents.

Anyone claiming to be pro-life and yet speaking against any one of these is a massive hypocrite.

MockneyReject · 04/01/2018 21:26

I'm not convinced that the student support area is the place for rigorous debate.
Advice, information and guidance, yes. Propaganda? No.

OP states that these leaflets were placed close to a reception area, where they might be assumed to be sanctioned by the University, or at least to contain factual, impartial information. I would hazard a guess that whoever placed them there knew exactly what they were doing.

The Vegetarian Society comparison doesn't work. Unless they were to produce leaflets made to look like medical advice, recommending an extreme, calorie limiting diet, stressing the dire consequences of gaining weight by eating meat and were placed outside the room where the eating disorder clinic is held.

Duckyneedsaclean · 04/01/2018 21:28

Dipping linus BertrandRussell

SPUC and other charities, for instance GCN, help mothers with housing, applying for benefits, getting education, finding childcare, finding employment. They do this because they care about people.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/01/2018 21:28

Yes Trills

also better and more accessible mental health services, better care leaver support, bet support to enable women to escape domestic violence, research to eliminate fetal abnormality failing that research into pre pregnancy embryo testing, stop rape ...

Coconutspongexo · 04/01/2018 21:30

They don’t care about people enough to put the mothers well-being first though

ghostyslovesheets · 04/01/2018 21:30

lots of people do that - I do that as part of my job - I don't force my views on women though - SPUC don't pay a penny towards any of that do they - they do bugger all that other, way less judgemental, agencies don't do

plus other agencies don't harass and abuse women accessing health services

Trills · 04/01/2018 21:31

All of those too ghosty

LineysRunes · 04/01/2018 21:31

spuc ... help(s) mothers with housing, applying for benefits, getting education, finding childcare, finding employment

Ah, ok. All stuff from the state, then.

LineysRunes · 04/01/2018 21:33

And weirdly, I've never been followed down the street by someone who works for the DWP spitting in my face.

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 04/01/2018 21:37

spuc ... help(s) mothers with housing, applying for benefits, getting education, finding childcare, finding employment

It does in its lying fatuous arse.
