To not empty pockets

Wheelywheel · 03/01/2018 19:58

I feel very definite that I am nbu but would like to check what others think.

I am the person who does all the washing and ironing etc. My rule has always been that you need to empty pockets and take cufflinks off before clothes go in the wash basket as I will always assume clothes are ready to be washed in there. I don't often repeat this rule out loud as it should be common sense.

So recently DH has started getting annoyed that the washing machine is getting blocked with coins and that he has lost a cufflink. He thinks it should be the washing persons job to check pockets pre wash.

So who is BU here? Check before basket or before wash?

check before basket.

also for adults - turn your clothes the right way round before basket (I'm not going to do it when hanging up wet things to dry)

Theresnonamesleft · 03/01/2018 20:07

I never check pockets.
When people started complaining, I made a simple decision. Do your own washing.
Now it's not a one-person job.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2018 20:07

The person putting the washing on checks the pockets.

Metheven · 03/01/2018 20:07

Not up to the washing person to check the clothes. Whoever puts them in the wash basket needs to check they are ready to wash. You are not your husbands mother, he is an adult and capable of checking pockets.

Singlebutmarried · 03/01/2018 20:07

I don’t check pockets, should any money appear in the washing machine that is therefore mine in a form of washing tax.

gunsandbanjos · 03/01/2018 20:08

Your husband should check his pockets. You’re not his mother.

Rainatnight · 03/01/2018 20:09

I do all the laundry in our house and think that it should be the wearer - ie the person putting it into the basket. DP doesn't pay any attention, though.

I have therefore instituted a pocket tax. Any money I find in the pockets is mine to keep.

Rainatnight · 03/01/2018 20:09

Oh crosspost and snap, single!

MyNewBearTotoro · 03/01/2018 20:10

I never check pockets if I’m washing things taken from the laundry basket. If I wash something of DP’s that’s been hung over a chair or something I will check the pockets first but I assume if it’s in the laundry basket it’s ready to be laundered.

Mysteriouscurle · 03/01/2018 20:10

The person doing the washing makes the rules so he can empty his pockets or wash his own clothes

Hassled · 03/01/2018 20:10

I don't check pockets, and regard any coinage that appears as mine. If you're leaving me clothes to wash, it's reasonable for me to assume they are ready to wash and if they're not that's really not my issue. We've had some freshly laundered headphones as a result, but they still work (so far).

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2018 20:11

If the person putting the washing on is the person who pays for the washing machine repair man to come then I think it's wise for them to check the pockets.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/01/2018 20:12

Before putting in basket, owner checks pockets. Whoever puts the washing on checks the pockets again, or gets to spend 30 minutes picking bits of disintegrated tissue out of the clean washing. (Yes DH I mean you)

kingjofferyworksintescos · 03/01/2018 20:12

I agree it should be the wearer not the washer who empties and checks the clothing but as it's just myself and DP it will be me that suffers as I rarely leave anything in my pockets but he often does , tissues and notes - took ages to get bits of tissue out of my black dress 🙁

Notevilstepmother · 03/01/2018 20:12

They should be emptied by the wearer as they go in the dirty clothes basket. However I do double check as it’s often me dealing with the washing machine and I can’t be doing with it blocking or tissue everywhere.

ReadyForGoodNews · 03/01/2018 20:12

*check before basket.

also for adults - turn your clothes the right way round before basket (I'm not going to do it when hanging up wet things to dry)*

Exactly this for me.

Also, our washing machine broke because of a loose coin once, and we had to replace it.

MikeUniformMike · 03/01/2018 20:13

I wash all clothes inside out.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2018 20:14

I wash everything inside out too. Stops things going bobbly.

Redsippycup · 03/01/2018 20:14

Sew his pockets shut.

Intelinside · 03/01/2018 20:14

My husband checks my pockets when he does our washing. I can't be trusted to do it and he hates stuff being left in the machine!

fairgame84 · 03/01/2018 20:14

I always check pockets before loading the machine, however the rule is that anything left in the pockets becomes mine. Useful rule when you have people who forget to empty money out of their pockets Wink

SnowFairyDust · 03/01/2018 20:16

Yep check before basket! DH has taken to taking a jumper and a t-shirt off at once and putting them in the basket one inside the other Angry I just wash them and hang them out that way even though it nearly kills me to do so!

You can't be arsed to put your stuff in the basket properly, you're the one who loses out!!

Jedbartletforpresident · 03/01/2018 20:16

Definitely the wearer - and ALL members of the family (children and adults) are expected to turn their clothes the right way out and put them in the correct basket.

In fact - I instituted a fine system for clothes inside out, clothes in the wrong basket, clothes on the floor rather than in the actual basket, clean clothes in the basket (one DD does this out of pure laziness because she can't be bothered to put stuff away properly), and yes - pockets not emptied. A few weeks of losing a fair amount of pocket money soon put and end to it all with the DC, and DH learned soon enough to stop me nagging!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/01/2018 20:18

My husband washed my son's iPod a few years back. Unless you want to replace expensive items or pay to fix your washer or dryer (or replace them like I had to when my bra underwire came loose and jammed the dryer drum), it just common sense to check pockets first.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 03/01/2018 20:20

I always check if loading the machine, takes seconds and stops anything that could break the machine or stick to other clothes. Rarely find anything but we can all be forgetful at times so it's no effort to check.
