To not empty pockets

Wheelywheel · 03/01/2018 19:58

I feel very definite that I am nbu but would like to check what others think.

I am the person who does all the washing and ironing etc. My rule has always been that you need to empty pockets and take cufflinks off before clothes go in the wash basket as I will always assume clothes are ready to be washed in there. I don't often repeat this rule out loud as it should be common sense.

So recently DH has started getting annoyed that the washing machine is getting blocked with coins and that he has lost a cufflink. He thinks it should be the washing persons job to check pockets pre wash.

So who is BU here? Check before basket or before wash?

Both! expect everyone to empty theirs, but wouldn't risk putting anything in the machine without checking. Some things still seem to slip through!

Still can't train my family to separate their pants from their tights/leggings/trousers, or un-ball socks before putting in the wash!

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 03/01/2018 20:23

If you want to kill your machine and have to buy a new one, by all means think yourself clever for not doing it.

Wheelywheel · 03/01/2018 20:25

We would both be paying for a repair so equal on that part. Obviously if I hear a jingle of coins I won't purposely put them in the wash but I cba going through every pocket and checking each shirt. I iron them all for him, I'm sure he's capable of checking them first as a small price to pay.

Yes on the pocket tax!

FuzzyCustard · 03/01/2018 20:28

Wearer checks pockets and turns clothes inside out (things with pockets dry faster, colour fades less, and there's less bobbling).

This is, of course, in an ideal world and doesn't always happen.

When clean and dry, clothes are returned to owner in the form of a pile on the bed. I am not putting them in a drawer.

MsHomeSlice · 03/01/2018 20:31

and this is why I tend to wash my stuff separately from dh's and the childrens....if there is some snot filled pocket of tissues then it will not be allll over my clothes!

I only check stuff I have gathered up..you know those rare occasions when the laundry basket is empty but it is such a glorious day you NEED to have a line full of washing!

My view is that items in the laundry basket are for washing, and if there is a wallet, or anything in the pockets then the decision is made for me.

and YY to the laundry tax, dd used to do very well out of her brothers...took me ages to work out why she was so keen to help with the laundry!

quicknamechange12345 · 03/01/2018 20:34

Whoever puts them in the wash should empty pockets. I have the same "pocket tax" here. Quite often reap a £3-£5 reward. But once it was £80! And he never mentioned it. So I bought some ugg boots In the sale. Smile

LouLouLove · 03/01/2018 20:34

i always check pockets when I put the washing in the machine. nothing worse than a stray tissue getting into the wash!

Shenanagins · 03/01/2018 20:39

Wearer empties pockets as anything in the basket is implied as ready for washing. I don’t have time to go through pockets, god knows what mankiness I would find in them!

Livness12 · 03/01/2018 23:30

@Jedbartletforpresidet - 'one DD does this out of pure laziness because she can't be bothered to put stuff away properly)' - My twin used to do this, it drove me absolutely mad! I did a load of washing one day, put his cleaned bedsheets folded up in a pile on his bed (note: I did NOT strip/make his bed...just emptied the washing basket etc!) and found the same ones clean and back in washing basket a few hours later). I actually cried. Blush

I would say not unreasonable to not empty pockets! Usually wearer's responsibility to check! (Though obviously if something feels very heavy, hear coins or clear mistake, it is understandable every so often...)

Snowman41 · 03/01/2018 23:37

I tell all of mine to empty their pockets before they put stuff in the basket. However, I always double check, because it's easier than a broken washing machine.

PickAChew · 03/01/2018 23:40

I check for the boys, as they have SN, but al DH's things go in the washer and dryer as found in the basket, including rolled u p sleeves. If they don't make it to anywhere the vicinity of the basket, they don't even get washed.

MrsDilber · 03/01/2018 23:41

I do all the laundry and don't check pockets . Yanbu.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/01/2018 23:44

I agree with your husband it should be the washing persons job. However, he is now the washing person, at least of his own clothes.

Gibble1 · 03/01/2018 23:52

I do most laundry and don’t check pockets. I often wash tissues and get really cross cause they’re from my own flipping pockets!
I empty pockets of stuff from upstairs though. Hence always missing my own tissues.
I also do pocket tax and even have a little money box by the machine for it.
Failed once. DH has been on a night out. I got up and collected all the washing. Emptied his pockets. Took all his (£20+ in change) coins and keys out then absentmindedly put his wallet back in his pocket and into the machine 😂

SparkleFizz · 03/01/2018 23:54

Both should check.

Wearer should check pockets are empty before putting clothes in washing basket.

Washer should double check pockets, as pocket contents can ruin a load of washing or break a washing machine if you’re really unlucky.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 03/01/2018 23:56

I always check pockets; anything I find that I might want then becomes mine Grin

AlexaAmbidextra · 03/01/2018 23:57

I'm pleased to tell you that the new fivers come up a treat.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 04/01/2018 00:08

Check the pockets but keep what you find? Wink

He's an adult man. He should check them!

ToadOfSadness · 04/01/2018 00:15

I do the washing and rarely check pockets, I also rarely check for stains. If something has a stain it needs to be left uppermost on the top of the laundry pile or basket.

I only wash trousers when the zips are fastened and they are turned inside out.

If I think of it I will check top pockets of shirts as sometimes I see something through the fabric, often a business contact, but there have been a selection of various small items in the drum after a wash, including dry cleaning tickets and business cards which have disintegrated and stuck to the washing. I shake them and then leave them to dry.

If they are not my pockets or cuff links I do not deal with them, anything out of the ordinary is left on the bed for the owner to deal with.

I empty my own pockets and the bathrobe & dressing gown pockets for tissues, that is all.

Regularsizedrudy · 04/01/2018 00:18

I married someone smart enough to operate a washing machine so it’s never been a problem for me

nocoolnamesleft · 04/01/2018 00:19

If he doesn't want you washing his clothes without checking the pockets, I would suggest that he washes his own clothes. Separate basket for him? Let it build up and build up?

CheshireChat · 04/01/2018 00:28

I'll have a cursory check as DP occasionally forgets pens, but I expect him to make sure.

I have a basket system and as long as that's abided by, I'm willing to be understanding. If it's not, then I presume he doesn't need anything washing or he'd rather do them himself shrug.

WorraLiberty · 04/01/2018 00:29

Both should check

Unless you've never made a mistake in your life

I accidentally left a £20 note in my trousers the other day and thank goodness my DH automatically checked before putting them in the wash.

The weird thing is I remember checking them myself, so I can only assume I somehow turned them around and checked the same (empty) pocket twice, by mistake.

I can't understand why this subject comes up so often on MN, when it's really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Ihaterapmusic · 04/01/2018 00:36

I don't check pockets. And often dp leaves his bottle of e cig liquid in there.. Which luckily won't damage the machine.. But after the millionth time of repeatedly telling everyone to empty pockets.. I just now say ohh look at that ( Insert lost item) going round and round lol

I'd. Love for one of them to do the washing but it just wouldn't be done my way lol.
