To think "Dry January" is a crap idea?

Why bother? Just drink in moderation. It makes it sound like you have a drink problem.

And for those who expect to be SPONSORED to do it ... Bollocks to that!

Cheers Wine

I agree. If you drink responsible year round then there’s no need for Dry January.

PurpleDaisies · 03/01/2018 16:32

I think it does help some people reset their normal drinking pattern if it’s crept up a bit so I understand why people do it. There’s no need to plaster it all over social media though.

HRTpatch · 03/01/2018 16:33

I just ignore people who are doing it. Or detoxing.

PurpleDaisies · 03/01/2018 16:34

Detoxing is unscientific bullshit. That’s what your liver and kidneys are for.

FluffyWuffy100 · 03/01/2018 16:44

Yup.

Also it seems it doesn;t count unless you post on Facebook "day three ALCOHOL FREE and i'm feeling sooooo much better, my skin is amazing, I am so much a better person than youuuuuuuuuuuuu"

Mate, it is Jan 3. If you need a gold star because you managed 3 days of no wine you have an issue.

"Day 3 of my GREEN JUICE DETOX" = instant unfriending.

Tipsntoes · 03/01/2018 16:45

I'm doing it to prove to myself I can because whilst I don't have a drink everyday, there are occasions when I very much feel that I "need" a drink.

I haven't told anyone except those friends who are likely to encourage me to have "just the one" though.

All a bit needy

user187656748 · 03/01/2018 16:47

January is when I need to have a drink. Its depressing cold and dark.

blueskyinmarch · 03/01/2018 16:47

I am doing, along with eating more healthily, it as I feel sluggish and bloated from overindulging during the festive season. I don't have it anywhere on social media and I am not being sponsored. I am just choosing not to drink for as long as I feel I want to. Sorry if you don't like it. My choice, not yours.

CoffeebyIV · 03/01/2018 16:49

I’m day 3 of this along with eating healthier and drinking more water. I have spots appearing! How is this better for me? Shall I just go back to my red wine

Talith · 03/01/2018 16:51

Because many people find their drinking is slipping into dependency. It's a good way to show yourself you can take control back.

If you can take it or leave it well bully for you. Well done. Have a sticker. Not everyone is the same. It's a positive thing. A starting point for healthier living.

I agree sponsoring people is weird though. The beneficiaries are cancer charities though so I can't get too worked up about it.

ninjapants · 03/01/2018 16:52

I agree. I'm particularly annoyed by those expecting to be sponsored for it as if it's a 'challenge' for them; if it's that difficult to acheive then it really isn't something to advertise.
I find it insulting that anyone thinks 'dry January' is a fun thing to do when alcoholism, which the excessive drinking that participants are familiar with can lead to, is no joke to many families

thelastredwinegum · 03/01/2018 16:54

I'm not a big drinker (apart from on Christmas day / NYE Blush ) I do enjoy a nice beer or two on a Saturday evening - literally one or two beers.

I'm doing Tryanuary instead www.tryanuary.com/ will pop to the local indie beer shop on Saturday afternoon and get a few local beers to try out.

just5morepeas · 03/01/2018 16:55

Yes, I think it's used by people who drink too much to "prove" to themselves that they don't have a problem. The fact that they then generally go back to drinking exactly what they were before obviously means nothing.

GrumpyOldBagFace · 03/01/2018 16:55

Wine cheers to that!

jaseyraex · 03/01/2018 16:57

Most people go back to drinking the exact same way they were before so I don't really get it. I don't drink ever. Why is it an achievement for someone to not drink for one month?! (Actual alcoholics aside of course). I certainly don't want anyone asking me to sponsor them although thankfully this year I don't know anyone that's taking part.

Trinity66 · 03/01/2018 16:57

I drank way too much over the holidays so I want to give my body a break....I don't expect to be sponsored for it though

scaevola · 03/01/2018 16:58

"no one really seems to want a slightly shitty wet February"

Maybe a bowel awareness event????

HerRoyalNotness · 03/01/2018 17:01

miaow. Poor old February Grin

I'm doing it, as a kind of reset. By the end of the year I'm drinking every day, I just want a break from it. And it's better than dry July which is bloody hot and after you've been working in the garden, a cold beer is so nice.

I'm not advertising it though. Although sponsorship is inspired, perhaps I could raise enough to pay for beer for the rest of the year Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 03/01/2018 17:05

As said, people's drinking levels creep up. Especially if you are in a family that drinks, or keep the company of drinkers. No-one becomes an alcoholic on purpose, or overnight.

It gives those doing it something to think about, if it is a big challenge.

If you read the threads, posters are always surprised how much better they feel after even a week.

The UK's drinking habits have risen and it isn't just the young binge drinkers that are pushing up the figures.

I was watching Classic Coronation Street with my Adult DD and she asked me if the glasses really used to be that small.

It's easy to ignore things on FB. It's a positive thing to do, It has health benefits, so I don't see why anyone would have an issue with it, tbh.
