This is why we can't have nice things, and I'm tired of it

Full disclosure: I don't actually think I'm being unreasonable. I know I'm angry and that is coloring some of my words and actions and responses, but I don't think I'm all that wrong. I'm here for a vent and some commiseration, really.

I've got this joke I make all the time when something goes wrong, like something gets knocked over or falls on the floor. I laugh and I say "and that is why we can't have nice things". But I'm sitting here today seething at just about everyone I've encountered today, because the truth is, we CAN'T have nice things. And I am so sick and tired of people who are the reason why.

Like, we can't have a nice sit out on the back porch because the neighbors are blasting rap.

Like, the timetable machine thing at this bus stop has been broken for months and will never be fixed because the second it's fixed, someone will be along to smash it up again.

Like, I can't get anywhere on time today because people want to stand and argue with the bus driver over whether or not they have to pay (spoiler: yes you bloody well do).

Like, I'm not particularly enjoying my dinner because the woman who served me at the fast food restaurant spoke to me like I am a moron (I'm not), and it has vexed me.

Like, we can't have threads like we used to like Sharon and the wasp, because there's a contingent of Reasons We Can't Have Nice Things who will be along before we're ten posts in, troll hunting and pooh-poohing and calling shenanigans, instead of getting into the spirit of the thing.

What about you guys? Want to share your "I can't have [nice thing] because [reason]"? I know I'm being very negative and ranty but sometimes it's nice just to be able to unload.

Who knows, RWCHNT (Reason We Can't Have Nice Things) might even catch on as a new MN acronym lol.

I agree . The Northern European counties and the Netherlands are far more pleasant places to be . Yeah they are not perfect but they have a far larger ‘middle class’ and less divisions and class neurosis compared to the Uk , and the US for that matter

And their playgrounds are nicer too Grin

limitedperiodonly · 03/01/2018 19:51

Tom Hardy is currently second favourite to be Bond after James Norton. I keep muddling it up and saying Graham Norton. I'd love that even more than Idris Elba as a black Bond

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2018 19:52

And they pay a lot more in tax for that. I'd be happy to go for it but not to hand it out to facilitate laziness or corruption or whatever. As has been said, a fairer society is of benefit to everyone but I don't think removing gaps does everyone good. The issue we have is one of expectation without contribution, rights without responsibilities and the creep of the nanny state. I am not talking about the genuinely vulnerable here, they deserve the support of us all.

The first step is probably to deal with fat cats, non-taxpaying international firms and tax dodging at all levels.

SingingSands · 03/01/2018 19:55

I literally said these words tonight when DH opened a cupboard and yet another of my lovely little bowls fell out completely on its own and broke. Nothing to do with DH rootling around, oh no.

MrsKoala · 03/01/2018 19:55

Ha that's like DH accidentally advising people to go to Blackpool instead of Brighton as it was 'quirky and arty'. They weren't impressed. Grin

LizzieSiddal · 03/01/2018 20:06

Graham Norton as James Bond would be awesome.

Mind you I expect the film would turn out more like Mr Bean Xmas Hmm

Snowdrop18 · 03/01/2018 22:54

MrsKoala, you've never heard of Taylor Swift...?

Her music is one of the nice (one of the best) things that we do have! I don't know what number album she's on but I don't think my commute has been without her music for at least seven years!

Here's a lovely live acoustic song from the Grammy Museum set

m.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Zt47V3pPw

James Norton is too good an actor for Bond....his performance in Happy Valley was superb. Not as superb as Sarah Lancashire....thank goodness we still have nice things in these ways!

faithinthesound · 04/01/2018 02:15

To the person who asked if I always moan this much, actually no. But god forbid I should have a bad day and come to a community for a bit of a rant and a bit of support, huh? Much better I should repress until I end up with an ulcer.

To the virtue signalers who pointed out how nice things are around their way, and I mean this as kindly as possible, can you feck right off? I know there are nice things, but as I said in the previous paragraph, god forbid I should have a bit of a moan and a bit of a rant before going back to looking on the bright side. You do understand what catharsis is, don't you? You bleating on about how nice things are does not cheer me up, but rather makes me rage harder, and makes my bit of a mood last far longer than it might otherwise.

To everyone who got what I was getting at, thank you. A vented spleen sits better than a full one.

To everyone in general: TIWWCHNT. Because people either don't reading the original post, or ignorantly or willfully misunderstand its intent, and would rather derail than engage with the actual point.

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 04/01/2018 02:32

I don't think you have grasped the nature of aibu, have you? It's not called "have a rant and everyone will agree with you". If you didn't want to be told you were unreasonable you should have posted somewhere else.

Lweji · 04/01/2018 03:31

faithinthesound

Just be careful your speen doesn't burst with all that rage. It must be hard being you. Flowers

Snowdrop18 · 04/01/2018 08:35

OP I'm with you but I think quite a lot of posts are with you.

There are so many "reasons" we can't have nice things, it's good to rant. Though AIBU is completely bonkers sometimes.

MrsKoala · 04/01/2018 10:01

Thanks Snowdrop. It's okay, not really my cup of tea tho. I don't get a chance to listen to the radio (6 music usually if i do) much but i don't think i've ever heard it. I've certainly never seen her before. I'm surprised she's on MN approved lists as i thought all OW should be shunned and tarred! Wink

Faith - What did you want from this thread? Did you just want people sharing stories of how shit their area is? I thought it had developed quite an interesting discussion regarding reasons and why some areas are 'nicer' than other etc. I can certainly share stories about crappy areas i've lived in. Norwood Junction was particularly charming...

Snowdrop18 · 04/01/2018 11:29

MrsK, it's very much not a typical example

I posted it for Swifties who might not have seen it before.

bit flummoxed by the notion of her being an OW?!

ooh don't get me started on crappy areas - but aren't lots of places crappy unless you can afford a really naice one? This gets me back to property prices and rental costs - a huge factor in WWCHNT.

MrsKoala · 04/01/2018 11:39

And lots of places are still crappy even if you cannot afford to live there. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Acton or Shepherds Bush and they are well out of my budget.

(i thought limited said she was the one who had an affair with married Tom Hiddleston? My celeb information is fucking dire so i may have got that wrong and have tarred the lovely Ms Swift unfairly - apologies)

makeourfuture · 04/01/2018 11:43

"Asked if she was critical of her bodyguard, Swift replied: "I'm critical of your client sticking his hand under my skirt and grabbing my ass".

  • Taylor Swift, giving groper's lawyer hell.
Bumsnetnetbums · 04/01/2018 11:43

Cant have nice things because was brought up in poverty and feel guilt that my dying mother went hungry.
Because my family override any choice i have and judge it
Because i married a nasty bastard who made me feel i didnt deserve things
Because i cannot afford the things said to be nice
Because i dont understand technology
Cos the dick neighbour chopped all my trees to see into my garden and then built decking so i have no privacy.

streetlife70s · 04/01/2018 11:53

I hear you OP. I understood the tone of the thread and thought it was a really good lighthearted / cathartic thread and joined in. I popped back to have a look at other posts and I’m like Hmm I’m not sure whether people genuinely don’t get it or if, simply because it’s in AIBU it’s a free for all to be as mean as possible.

Carbohol78 · 04/01/2018 12:11

@bumsnetnetbums

I agree about the technology thing! I can email, google and text, that’s it. I see all these cool music features and entertainment stuff and work related things which would make my life easier, but I can’t do any of it

Carbohol78 · 04/01/2018 12:13

Was Swifty the OW?!?! Shock

Gingernaut · 04/01/2018 12:17

What does TIWWCHNT mean?

Snowdrop18 · 04/01/2018 12:46

MrsKoala - no Tom Hiddleston was not married, Taylor Swift was not the other woman.

I was a bit bemused by that one!! I don't do gossip but that relationship was so out there, even I didn't miss it!

Ginger "TIWWCHNT" - This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

I thought the entire OP title was from the general internet usage of that term, it's become a general catchphrase.

Bums - you know what, here's another reason we can't have nice things. you know you said you don't know how to use technology? I actually talked to the local job centre about offering a sort of work exchange where I would give two hours a week to people who needed to build those skills to get work (linked to my company giving us volunteering hours)

I was told, there is no facility for that. I can volunteer with the local group who help the elderly but I was particularly keen to help those who can't get into work because of lack of knowledge of these sorts of systems and there's loads of people in that situation.

I will keep trying but quite honestly sometimes the system is stacked against you when you are trying to be useful.

See also - getting spare food from work (catered events) distributed to London homeless. No luck with that one either. Gah.

Gingernaut · 04/01/2018 12:48

Thank you. 😳

MrsKoala · 04/01/2018 14:01

What!? If he wasn't married why was it a thing? I'm Confused

APOLOGY STATEMENT I would like to make an unreserved and sincere apology to Taylor Swift and her lawyers. I was completely and utterly wrong. All i can say in my defence is i'm a complete fucking buffoon who shouldn't be given the responsibility of even a small bit of information. Limited, i am holding you partially responsible for giving me the apple of knowledge and now look what i've done.

Blush

As you were everyone. Please ignore all my posts.Grin

Snowdrop18 · 04/01/2018 14:21

MrsKoala "If he wasn't married why was it a thing?"

because media be crazy!!

I've even heard people say Hiddleston's reputation is ruined because of it.

Now I know you are not a Swiftie but given all the crap that media like to peddle, the fact that she called her album "Reputation" made me like her even more Grin

QuiteLikely5 · 04/01/2018 14:31

I see what you are saying op but AIBU would surely have thrown up opinions that differed from your own.

You knew that though

Maybe post in chat
