Please help me find a contraception I can go on.

I need a form of contraception.
It's not as simple as picking one unfortunately 😂 I have many health issues which prevents me having most forms, I've been looking online and everything I check I can't use. Ideally wanted the implant.

I've had blood clots, mini stroke and have a primary biliary cholangitis (liver disease) which seem to be the main conditions that hormonal contraception doesn't agree with
as well as lupus.
So I'm stumped on what I can have.

I can't have the copper coil as I've endometriosis and mirena coil has hormones in.

Does anyone please have some ideas?
I don't want any more children yet!

Give us a list of what you've tried / know you can't use.

rainbowduck · 02/01/2018 19:29

Condoms?

Alison100199 · 02/01/2018 19:30

The cap. Used properly it's great. I can't use hormonal contraception and for various reasons have chosen not to have a coil. The cap plus condoms at my fertile time has been great.

PerfectlyDone · 02/01/2018 19:32

Billing's method?

Have you had any expert advice? Attend a FPC for some RL discussion of the pros and cons of various methods.

Endometriosis should not stop you from being able to use the copper coil I don't think?

Can he have a vasectomy? I ovulate multiple times a month so birth control isn't very effective for me. DH is getting the snip because he doesn't want more babies and I refuse to have a termination if I get pregnant.

flumpybear · 02/01/2018 19:34

Cap?

Madcatter · 02/01/2018 19:37

I also can't have oestrogen as I have RA and so am at risk of stroke. Have also had issues with my liver as a result of medication.

I've just had a Mirena fitted to treat endo. Although it's hormonal it's a much lower dose than the injection, implant or mini pill as it's delivered directly into the uterus. This also means it bypasses your liver. Worth speaking to your healthcare team and seeing if it's an option. Though the fitting is uncomfortable fucking excruciating

Indigo911 · 02/01/2018 19:40

Could you try Natural Cycles (check it out online)

mayhew · 02/01/2018 19:41

This is what specialist family planning clinics are for. Usually run by a community gynaecologist. Every area should have one.

frenchknitting · 02/01/2018 19:41

I didn't think I could have the mirena because I thought all hormones were ruled out due to a liver condition. However, a gyno put me on it for endometriosis, as the hormone levels are much lower than the pill. Worth checking?

mayhew · 02/01/2018 19:44

Go on the NHS Choices website. You can search by postcode

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 02/01/2018 19:48

Unfortunately I'm in quite a rural place that has 1 FPC clinic drop in a week for 2 hours at evening. My partner is working nights so I'm going to have to bring DC with me and get a taxi.

Have asked GP and also consultants and they have said they don't know - helpful!

TMI but some condoms don't agree with me and we aren't very good at remembering each time.

Vasectomy isn't an option because in a few years once I'm in good health I'd ideally like another child.

I will check out the suggestions; thank you!

My second child is a result of Mirena..... It was not pleasant fitting it and a year later I had a lovely bundle of joy lifted from my loins holding the bastard thing. Even my obn was laughing.

We followed the rhythm method along with the Mirena. The multiple ovulation issue is what screwed up our contraceptive plan. At this point I'm just thankful I don't have any sets of twins.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 02/01/2018 20:12

Oh gosh. That made me laugh :) not the coil failing but baby coming out with it.

Latex free condoms
Not having PIV

TovaGoldCoin · 02/01/2018 22:23

I can't use hormonal BC due to Ehlers Danlos syndrome, it makes it far worse. We use condoms (some expensive kind that the old man buys) and the calendar method to avoid risky days. We also avoid penetrative sex... Yiu can be really inventive Grin

Singlebutmarried · 02/01/2018 22:28

Not any help but mirena is the only one I can use. Everything else either goes thru too quick or sends me psycho.

If you find an alternative I’m all ears as I hate having extra hormones.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/01/2018 22:31

We've used condoms for 14 years. Never managed to forget once!

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 02/01/2018 22:40

Blood clots, mini stroke, lupus and liver disease... Are you sure another pregnancy is in your best interests? They're all quite serious conditions. If synthetic hormones exacerbate the conditions surely natural hormones (in pregnancy) would do the same?

ticketytock1 · 02/01/2018 23:33

I would highly recommend natural cycles

mirime · 02/01/2018 23:46

@Anotherdayanotherdollar not sure it works exactly like that. I don't get on with hormonal contraception, causes depression, low sex drive and endless thrush and, with the combined pill, migraines with aura. Had none of that with pregnancy, and the two migraines I had were very mild with no aura.

RavingRoo · 02/01/2018 23:47

Condoms

hiyasminitsme · 02/01/2018 23:50

Google UKMEC 2016 and look up PBC and lupus there. Off the tipo of my head copper coil and implant should be fine but if you were my patient I would look it up as you're complicated. Endometriosis is not necessarily a complication to a coil and the mirena generally isn't considered in the same category as other hormonal FP as it's a small local dose (with some exceptions eg breast cancer)

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/01/2018 23:52

Copper coil fines you periods from hell im getting rid of mine!!

Lockheart · 03/01/2018 00:02

Non-latex condoms or femidoms will be the easiest. You’ll just have to learn to remember.

Or you could try he diaphragm, cervical cap, or sponge.

Since it sounds like all hormonal contraception is out, and you can’t have the coil, you’re limited to sterilisation or barrier methods (or non-PIV sex or abstinence).

You can try rhythm and natural methods, but to be honest if you have trouble remembering to use condoms I wouldn’t advise using these as they need to be stuck to very very rigidly. And even then, you’re still shortening your odds compared to using no contraception at all.
