to be fed up of all the negativity around January

Yes, I know it's a bi of an anti climax after Christmas but some people seem to hype themselves, and everyone around them, into a state of absolute misery about January. Oh I have no money, oh I have to lose six stone, oh is anyone else giving up wine for January, oh, oh, bloody oh.

It's just another month. Stop whining on and on and on and just get back to normal life after Christmas (which we'll start hyping ourselves up for again in about 9 months!

I don't mind January. But I feel like that about february! Had enough of the winter by then, and the summer is so far away. I find February the depressing month.

FloControl · 02/01/2018 09:59

You are definitely not BU. I think some folk automatically work themselves into a post-Christmas blues rather than simply accepting that, as you say, January is just another month.

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/01/2018 10:00

I love January! Really feel like the clock is reset, I don’t know why but always feel this way! Even though I have a shit ton of weight to lose and need to save money, but I’m still positive hehehe

Don’t let em bring you down op! Mopers!

Anymajordude · 02/01/2018 10:00

You're clearly not skint and cold then.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/01/2018 10:01

Good point dude

FloControl · 02/01/2018 10:03

February is often the coldest month of the year. But, looking on the bright side, it is also the last month of meteorological winter and the days are noticeably longer by mid-February. Plus, when February comes, you can say to yourself, 'next month is spring'.

HulaMelody · 02/01/2018 10:03

I can only say that I don’t have the January blues as I get paid 4 weekly and I only need to wait til the middle of the month.

Eolian · 02/01/2018 10:05

I don't see it like that at all. The people I see wanting to lose weight, quit booze, go to the gym etc seem to see it as a positive, turn-over-a-new-leaf kind of thing, not a moan. I like the new year. Although for me (teacher with teacher dh and dc in school) September always feels more like the 'new start' month.

WalkingWolly · 02/01/2018 10:06

God no I agree

The amount of food and drink some people consume in a few days and then whinge they feel ill and need to lose weight. There’s indulging and then there’s literally stuffing yourself until you feel sick.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 02/01/2018 10:07

My birthday is in the first week of January Sad

I gave up celebrating it properly then ages ago! No one is up for it/they've stopped drinking/too tired/too broke. I've heard all the excuses!

Infuriatingly my dad, after being aware of when my birthday is for almost 32 years, still does the 'this is only something small as it's been a mad Christmas but I'll get you another present later in the year.....'

That never materialises!

I'm used to it now. I still resent it a bit though.

ScreamingValenta · 02/01/2018 10:08

I always book a week's annual leave in February, which gives me something to look forward to in January. Like FloControl I like it when the days get obviously longer, too.

k2p2k2tog · 02/01/2018 10:09

Not an anticlimax at all. Christmas is not a highlight of my year - January is all about new beginnings, the nights starting to get lighter again.

Bubblesblue · 02/01/2018 10:09

Yes! So much negativity. Agree it goes into Feb too. January isn't my favourite month of the year, but it's people's negativity that make it seem worse!

user1485342611 · 02/01/2018 10:11

Personally I think if we calmed down a bit about Christmas, January wouldn't feel like such a glum 'non event' to so many people. But I suppose it's hardly surprising that after having the house decorated since mid November, talking about Christmas since about Sept, spending crazy amounts of money on presents and food and going out, there's a sort of communal gloom and slump in January.

But when I hear people saying 'oh no one goes out in January,' I think it's going a bit far.

Today 10:00 Anymajordude

You're clearly not skint and cold then.

thats what I thought.... when I worked from home, January and February were okay months. Now I’m getting trains in rush hour, going to work and coming home in the dark and freezing in cold buildings- not so much

Seasonseatings · 02/01/2018 10:12

I have a January birthday and like Harrietkettle get fed up trying to organise anything, my 40th was a let down.

I try to be jolly in January and frugal in February.

PumpkinPie2016 · 02/01/2018 10:21

I don't mind January - I am lucky that I am not skint as I planned the spending very carefully for Xmas but I appreciate that this is not possible for everyone.

I love Christmas but quite like getting back to normal from today onwards.

The school I work in starts back on the 8th and I will quite enjoy getting back to my usual routine. Although, I will enjoy this week doing things with my DS.

ClaryFray · 02/01/2018 10:22

I'm skint, and cold but personally I love this time of year. Plus it's my birthday next month.

k2p2k2tog · 02/01/2018 10:26

Personally I think if we calmed down a bit about Christmas

Totally agree. Of course if you spend every waking minute from August planning Christmas and thinking about how you're #makingmemories it's going to feel a bit flat after New Year.

IrenetheQuaint · 02/01/2018 10:28

I love January! It is super peaceful after the exhaustion of December. I am planning to spend lots of evenings in watching box sets while eating jacket potatoes.

user1485342611 · 02/01/2018 10:30

I'm looking forward to reading some of the new books I acquired over Christmas, watching some of the new series starting on television, and getting back to a community activity I'm involved in that re-starts next week.

I can feel the world turning, inching towards later sunsets, shoots of snowdrops are coming up in my garden. It can be a steely and determined month, a month to focus on goals and a hard reset.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/01/2018 10:34

The beginning is great, the first week. After that it's 7 weeks of the worst part of winter.

JaneEyre70 · 02/01/2018 10:37

I find the light is a struggle for me at this time of year, especially Jan and Feb so I struggle with low mood and I think that can be quite common. We've not been out much in December so I'm looking forward to some meals out again this month however and some nice long dog walks in peace once again.

shhhfastasleep · 02/01/2018 10:41

My birthday is in January!!

As you can see by my devoted attention today is my first day back at work. I was grumpy but it will pass.
