to be fed up of all the negativity around January

Yes, I know it's a bi of an anti climax after Christmas but some people seem to hype themselves, and everyone around them, into a state of absolute misery about January. Oh I have no money, oh I have to lose six stone, oh is anyone else giving up wine for January, oh, oh, bloody oh.

It's just another month. Stop whining on and on and on and just get back to normal life after Christmas (which we'll start hyping ourselves up for again in about 9 months!

Another January born who is tired of the ususal doom and gloom around birthday celebrations. I dont like January but that os entirely down to other people's attitudes about it! Now I'm off to the gym... Grin

Gromance02 · 02/01/2018 10:52

If people didn't spend money they don't have and make such a song and dance about 1 day, it wouldn't be an issue.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 02/01/2018 11:19

My dislike of January is due to the weather and the fact that it gets dark early rather than anything to do with Christmas or money. January is my least favourite month followed by December. Getting up in the dark, having to defrost the car, driving on icy roads, dark when you get home again, no public holidays, not much chance to get outside - those are the things I dislike. Coupled with the fact that my birthday falls in January. I envy people who have non-winter birthdays as there are many more options available for things to do especially outdoor activities that don't have to finish at 4pm when it gets dark. Oh, and the supermarkets clear out all the nice luxury food and replace it with diet products. There was one year I couldn't even find full fat custard!

Sallystyle · 02/01/2018 11:26

I can't stand January.

I can't stand the winter, I hate it with a passion and come January I have truly had enough of it.

I am not a massive Christmas lover so it isn't that. I don't spend more money that I can afford. I just hate January.

Nanna50 · 02/01/2018 11:28

Harriet me too my early January birthday has always been an anti climax my DH does always buy my present in summer though everybody else either promises to or buys Boots 3 for 2's in the sale!

I think some people do feel the clock is reset in January and after such an indulgent December feel that they need to do something about their lifestyle. I also think because everyone's doing it there is more motivation. Giving up alcohol for a month is not a bad thing and many people have overspent and feel miserable.

January can be an anti climax after months of planning and doing.

VioletCharlotte · 02/01/2018 11:28

I don't mind January, it feels like a fresh start and I welcome healthy eating and exercise after lots of rich food over Christmas.

The downside for me is money is always really tight though.

juliesaway · 02/01/2018 11:29

Move to Australia. Januarys are amazing here as the summer holidays follows on from Christmas - similar feeling to August in the Uk with loads of events on, festivals and summer holiday fun! We never get the glooms in January!

restbiterepeat · 02/01/2018 11:30

I like January. I like a fresh New Year and the sense of optimism before the resolutions are broken. But I also like Mondays. So I am full weird.

FluffyWuffy100 · 02/01/2018 11:31

I’ve got a January birthday. “Oh I can’t come out I’m doing dry January” well FUCK YOU THEN remind me not to give a fuck about your birthday in May.

elisaveta · 02/01/2018 11:34

Why can't people go out and have a soft drink? How bizarre to say that you can't go out because you're not drinking.

Bookaboo · 02/01/2018 11:34

Oh I can’t come out I’m doing dry January

Wankers!! Do they realise it's perfectly possible to go out , not drink and still enjoy themselves!!
I can't stand the self righteous dry January nob heads.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 02/01/2018 11:36

You're not bu. I don't like January personally but I don't go on about it to anyone. I used to dislike February too but on of the dc was born mid Feb so I now quite enjoy it, I also like the obviously lighter evenings & all the bulbs appearing. My favourite month is March though as I can get back out in the garden & there's usually at least a couple of day's when I can leave the back door open.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 02/01/2018 11:39

Correction: we do of course have one public holiday in Jan but it's over on the first day of the month with no more to look forward to.

Do people really start hyping themselves up for Christmas in September/ October? Maybe that's the problem.

Chienrouge · 02/01/2018 11:40

I don’t mind January (I am doing dry January but don’t think I’m particularly self righteous about it, I just do occasional months of alcohol during the year and January is a good time to do it as I’m skint!). I would still go out for a birthday, I just wouldn’t drink. I like the ‘fresh start’ feeling of January. I hate the bloody weather though.

SusanneLinder · 02/01/2018 11:45

I like January. New series on telly, weekends away to plan. I weirdly am not a fan of summer.
And yeah, feck off with dry January. I manage to go lots of nights out without drinking x

Trottersindependenttraders · 02/01/2018 11:46

I quite like January, it feels like a fresh start and a time for planning. I like the newness of it all. Love the quiet of it all after Christmas and a busy December.

It is DD's birthday this weekend and we always make a fuss and make it special, she's 9 this year and still not aware it's a crap time of year to have a birthday. It does limit our birthday days out though, I agree. Like the idea of moving to Australia juliesaway, but feels a bit of a drastic lifestyle change.

DH's b'day later this month and lots to look forward to this year. I don't get the "dry january, can't come out' mentality either.

RedForFilth · 02/01/2018 11:53

Just another month for me! Skint all the time anyway and I will probably lose more weight, lost nearly 2 stone now due to the aforementioned skintness! I'm no more or less depressed than any other time of year.

littlepeas · 02/01/2018 12:13

I like it. I like the sense of a whole new year stretching out ahead of me, I like being healthy as I've had enough of overindulging in December and dh is paid a bonus in his December pay, which means we're not skint! I don't like the weather, but I didn't like it in December either!

Justanothernap · 02/01/2018 12:23

Christmas is one month for me (December) so don't feel I drag it out too much. I am, however, prone to over spending & over indulging. So also prone to a mope in Jan. However although some here seem a little scathing (perhaps justifiably so!) of mopers like me, this thread has been handy for a different perspective. I feel a bit cheered up!

PNGirl · 02/01/2018 12:40

YANBU. I hate spring and summer so I like to eke out my winter!

k2p2k2tog · 02/01/2018 12:45

Do people really start hyping themselves up for Christmas in September/ October?

Much, much earlier than that. There are people on the CHristmas forum all year planning the "fun".

user1485342611 · 02/01/2018 13:12

I totally get that some people have negative feelings about January that have nothing to do with post Christmas anti climax. What I hate is the public spouting of how awful January is, how 'boring' it is, how 'there's nothing to look forward to', and people going on and on about their diets and their exercise regime and how they're not drinking and 'can't go out' and so on.

I mean, some people hate June or September but there isn't this mass whipping up of gloom over those months. It just augments any vague feelings of anti climax people might be feeling and turns it into a big deal.

I hate January, but I don't go around moaning about it. But what's the like? It's dark and miserable, there is nothing festive or fun or interesting about it, it's cold, it's 31 fucking days long, and summer is ages away. The one good thing is that my DC, who are bored out of their brains, will soon be going back to school, so at least I won't have to try and entertain them in the mud and the rain for much longer.

halfwitpicker · 02/01/2018 13:15

Yabu.

I fucking hate January.

halfwitpicker · 02/01/2018 13:16

And I do moan about it, dear reader, how I moan!
