My McDonalds milkshake really was too thick

Yes. Not a. AIBU but following some thread I read a few months back about looney customer complaints.

One was that the milkshakes in McDonalds were too thick- met with many sniggers.

Today I bought one and oh my I gave myself fish face and burst an eye vessel in the process. Took me 45mins of full on suck power BlushShock

I didn't however complain...

It was Vanilla, it was hard work, it was hard work. 'Teas worth it Wink

Happy 2018 all!

There is no way to re-calibrate the milkshake machine. It is either working or it isn't. You stick a cup under it and press the right button. (And banana isn't yellow, a fact that annoys me endlessly.)

They break down fairly often. We lost ours for four hours recently because someone accidently started the heat treat process. It really pisses me off when people think we're lying about them being off. When you're constantly pulling shakes and ice cream, the machine gets a lot of abuse.

They're partly frozen which is why they're so thick (they share the machine with the ice cream)... if you can't get it up the straw, wait a couple of minutes and it should be drinkable.

Christmastits · 01/01/2018 00:57

They should have re calibrated the machine.. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2018 00:59

There is no recalibration? Shock

QuestionableMouse · 01/01/2018 01:03

Nope. Product goes in, does magic in the machine (mixes with the flavoured syrups) and goes into the cup.

I'm sure the techs could change things but on a day to day basis there's no way to change the thickness of the shake. It's a standard product and McDonald's want it served the way it's made to be served.

Christmastits · 01/01/2018 01:05

I'm sure there was a poster on that fast food thread who worked for McDonald's and insisted that it wasn't to your liking you should ask them to recalibrate the machine 😂

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2018 01:06

That's the whole point of McDonalds isn't it? You know what you are getting. If they started recalibrating things it would be wrong and non standard, and not McDonalds!

Shadow666 · 01/01/2018 01:07

I can’t believe it didn’t melt at all in 45 minutes. Are you sure you don’t mean 4/5 minutes? Confused Unless you were sitting in a freezer.

Monkeyinshoes · 01/01/2018 01:08

Yep, they're partly frozen so just let them warm up. Also nothing wrong with E numbers (even vitamin C has an E number). Those ingredients are basically the same as an ice cream, if you've eaten ice cream you've eaten those ingredients.

Christmastits · 01/01/2018 01:08

Haha! @Shadow666 funny image of sitting in a walk in freezer 😂

MorrisZapp · 01/01/2018 01:09

Shadow, are you recalibration woman?

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2018 01:09

I am not really a fan of ice cream or milkshakes. If I am at McDonalds it's all about the breakfast and the coffee.

Christmastits · 01/01/2018 01:10

I made the fatal error of trying to drink a Wendy's frosty with a straw.. pretty sure it's meant to be eaten with a spoon but I gave it a damn good going

Miniminimus · 01/01/2018 01:11

I had a McDonald's chocolate milkshake last week, first for years. I couldn't get it up the straw at all and had to ask for a spoon. Worked perfectly.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 01/01/2018 01:11

I really fancy a McDonalds milkshake now. I was very tempted to go and get one, until I remembered that I’ve been drinking, apparently. I don’t feel even slightly tipsy. No tipsy, no milkshake. Not a great start to the NY 🤣

Piewraith · 01/01/2018 02:16

The funniest part of the thread was that no one mentioned, as questionablemouse just said, you actually can't calibrate the machine! There is no button for calibration.

Shadow666 · 01/01/2018 02:27

Yes, but did she actually time the 45 minutes? Her stopwatch might need recalibration.

Shadow666 · 01/01/2018 02:29

Of course the machines can be recalibrated.

sheepskinrug · 01/01/2018 03:25

I remember reading that thread and being in the minority that think that when you can't physically suck the drink out through a straw there has to be a problem with the machine!

Yes, @8DaysAWeek, how they mocked the "demanding" customer who complained about a too-thick milkshake, but I too remember thinking that if you can't even get it up the straw it's an ice cream not a milkshake! I didn't dare say that, mind, they would have thought me "difficult"! Grin

QuestionableMouse · 01/01/2018 05:31

Would you like to tell me the process then Shadow?

Mind, I've only worked at McDonald's for almost five years so what the fuck do I know? Hmm

iBiscuit · 01/01/2018 05:47

Return when I worked in a burger place in the 80s, we sold thickshakes. I don't think they're referred to as that now.

Shadow666 · 01/01/2018 06:25

Well, according to the manual the syrup can be manually calibrated but the shakes being too thick is more likely due to the cooling process or beating process so it's better to call for a service engineer to look at it.

MongerTruffle · 01/01/2018 06:52

I’m surprised that people would think that the machine could be recalibrated. The whole point of McDonald’s is that the food you get in London and Edinburgh tastes exactly the same. Consumers love consistency.

Shadow666 · 01/01/2018 08:29

All machines can be recalibrated. Perhaps the machine in Edinburgh is older than the machine in London, perhaps it hasn't been cleaned and serviced as much, perhaps the store is cooler in Edinburgh. Lots of different factors are involved. Any engineer will tell you. If the machine in Edinburgh is producing milk shakes with a too thick consistency then it probably needs servicing to recalibrate it so it is working correctly. Maybe a part has worn down, maybe some dirt in there. If the staff are getting a lot of complaints about it, they should have it looked at.

I'm obviously way too overinvested in all this. Grin

Bindibot · 01/01/2018 08:47

Would it be wrong to call my nephew and get him to swing round with a milkshake??

He’s a sweetie and would do it.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2018 09:50

If its one customer complaining I wouldn't be calling an engineer. Maybe it's the first time they've had one and don't realise they really are that thick.
