AIBU to want to be paid on the right day?

I am a nanny, my pay day is the last day of the month. (Today!)

This morning I checked my bank and I hadn't been paid. I messaged one of my bosses and politely said that I hadn't received my wages. 4 hours pass and no reply and no wages paid.

I then text my other boss who replied "it's left our account, assume it will clear first thing Tuesday"

Great. Today is my payday not Tuesday. I appreciate that it's a Sunday, but is it too much to ask to be paid on the agreed day?

There's not a lot they can do about it they are tied by the banking clearing days, Sorry.

I've been out of banking a long time now and I know things have got better but as it was over bank holidays if money was meant to leave your account it would be the first working day afterwards. Salaries would usually go in the last working day before, but this was big company payrolls so they would have had to have done it earlier to ensure that. If you are nannying I guess its only you they pay so have a regular payment set up which would leave their account late.

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 31/12/2017 16:20

Every company I've ever worked for, if the payday falls on a weekend day or a bank holiday then it's paid the Friday before.
Do they have a HR person you can speak to?
That's not on!

princesssparkle1 · 31/12/2017 16:21

I'm paid on the last day of the month. It goes into my account even if it's a Sunday.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 31/12/2017 16:22

YANBU. Of course you should get paid on the correct day.

I have to confess that our nanny has been working for us for 16 months and there was one month when the money cleared into her account a day late. I felt awful about it, was incredibly apologetic and offered to cover any interest or overdraft charges she incurred. Fortunately she was very understanding - I had been ill, was pregnant and working crazy hours at work - and being paid a day late wasn't going to cost her anything on that occasion.

If it's a total one-off and they are very apologetic, you might have to put it down to 'these things happen'. I work for a big law firm and they have screwed up my pay before - these things really do happen. But you absolutely should be paid on the correct day and if this ever happens again you should raise it with your bosses.

Me too. I think that's only decent.

insancerre · 31/12/2017 16:25

You should ask them for a cash advance and to reimburse any bank charges you might have incurred

Join nannychat or the nanny lounge private groups on Facebook. You'll get better advice there from other nannies, including nanny nick.

I thought it was normal to be paid on the last Thursday of the month, this would avoid the problem if you could change your terms.

Rossigigi · 31/12/2017 22:59

How are they paying you? An an example, I just transferred £100 to my son as part of his Xmas present, it was in his account within 1 minute and he sent it to his dad (he'd borrowed to buy something), and that hit his dad's account within a minute. So within 5 minutes, it had gone through 3 accounts no problem.

Rossigigi · 31/12/2017 23:01

I've had various pay days over the years- 18th, 23rd, 25th and 28th and have never had a late payment

BritInUS1 · 31/12/2017 23:02

Do you have a contract? I would point out to them that you need the money in your account by the end of the month in future, otherwise they are in breach of contract

Spartaca · 31/12/2017 23:04

Last working day of the month normally. Emphasis on 'working' day.

LittleMe03 · 31/12/2017 23:07

You should have been paid on Friday

venys · 31/12/2017 23:08

I logged into HSBC yesterday (business banking) and there was a message saying that payments due 29th hadn't gone through..I think they were saying they have sorted the problem now so hopefully everyone has their money by now. Could this have been the problem?

NC4now · 31/12/2017 23:10

If it’s a standing order set up to be paid on the 31st it will go out the next banking day.
Are you in a private/casual arrangement with your employers?

watchedfrozentoomanytimes · 31/12/2017 23:10

I transferred money to go between accounts on 29th but for some reason it now says it’s not happening until 2nd. No idea why!

Maelstrop · 31/12/2017 23:11

Should’ve been paid Friday as last working day of the month. I’d be very cross.

TheQueenOfWands · 31/12/2017 23:14

My work do this.

If payday falls on a Saturday I don't get paid until the Monday.

It's a nightmare.

Fabpinky · 31/12/2017 23:22

NC4now - I'm not sure if it's a standing order or if they do a transfer on the day.

Proper arrangement with contract, payslips and tax etc. I realised yesterday that I haven't received my payslip this month yet, which makes me think they have possibly forgotten and are bluffing.

It should say in your contract, what would happen if your pay day is on a weekend

MintCassis · 31/12/2017 23:51

Sounds like they may have a standing order set up. I have two SOs due to go out my account on the first and they appeared on my banking app today but won't reach the recipients until Tuesday.

NC4now · 31/12/2017 23:52

If they do a transfer on the day they should be able to sort it in a couple of hours, tops.
Very bad form.

Unicornfluffycloudsandrainbows · 31/12/2017 23:54

My ex gets paid on the 1st on every month so he gets paid the next working day not before

bonzo77 · 31/12/2017 23:56

YANBU. I managed to pay my nanny by bank transfer on time, despite us both being on AL and out of routine. Bank transfer seems to be almost instant.

My 2 last employers were shit with this. It’s why I left.
