To hold the tampax string out of the way (or not, as the case may be)!

Chatting to my bf the other day and one of us holds the string out of the way when we have a wee, the other doesn't! Each of us was as incredulous as the other that we would do it 'our way' (iyswim!!)
What do you lot do?

Hold if number 2 but not for a wee. It gets dried when I wipe but worry about back end germs transferring. TMI but it is a TMI thread!

Voice0fReason · 30/12/2017 22:45

The soggy string was something I hated when I used tampons but I never found a way of holding it out of the way that worked for me.

MsHarry · 30/12/2017 22:46

I drink lots so wee lots, if I changed every wee I'd go through too many tampons and they'd be dry and uncomfortable to remove!

OrionsGirl · 30/12/2017 22:46

Used to hold the string out of the way (too old for periods now). It was plenty long enough to do so. If I didn't I'd get a burning sensation a little while later from the wee left on the string. Didn't need to change every wee - light flow and drink a lot of water. Didn't think of tucking it up or to the side.

MsHarry · 30/12/2017 22:48

Can I just ask about moon cup? my youngest DD has just started so was looking for pads and saw mooncups. I had never heard of them before MN. Where do you empty and rinse them? in the sink???

LettuceandLovage · 30/12/2017 23:07

But if it gets wet you just dry yourself with loo paper. All your pubic hair gets wet too when you wee- unless you shave your undercarriage- that's why we use loo paper after a wee.

LettuceandLovage · 30/12/2017 23:08

Tampons - I thought this happened to everyone but maybe it's just my physiology: when I wee, even if I hold the string out of the way the end of the tampon gets wet and of course soaks the wee upwards. If the string gets wet it soaks up into the tampon too. I can't bear the idea of walking around with a wee-soaked tampon inside me (and it makes it less effective anyway) so I change every wee.

Sounds as if the tampon is far too far down- should be tucked up right inside you. Tampax expand lengthways- Lillets only widthways.

WeAllHaveWings · 30/12/2017 23:11

Tmi alert. The string tends to hide itself away in my labia and would take a bit of fishing around to find so I just leave it. If it is damp wiping with loo roll mostly dries it off. Any remaining dampness would be absorbed by the santitary towel I wear as extra safety against flooding.

It is wonderful being a woman!

RedBlackberries · 30/12/2017 23:12

Hold it to one side. Hate a soggy string!

ILoveMillhousesDad · 30/12/2017 23:12

Well I was agog until I realised you were talking about your best friend and not your boyfriend Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 30/12/2017 23:17

Oh for goodness sake! So you can't just wash your hands if you get a bit of pee on them?

Also, you can't go round telling people they MUST use moon cups - FFS.

NormaNameChange · 30/12/2017 23:21

I dont unravel the string on my lilet until it needs to come out. Avoids wee and that strange sensation of having something tucked inside my labia.

steff13 · 30/12/2017 23:30

Also, you can't go round telling people they MUST use moon cups - FFS.

Sure you can. I think you'll find you can tell people anything you want.

Where do you empty and rinse them? in the sink???

You empty it in the toilet, then either wipe it out with toilet paper if you're in public, or rinse it with water in the sink (I pour the water in the toilet).

hibbledibble · 30/12/2017 23:32

For those who hate tampons but dont get on with mooncups either: washable pads are another option.

NoMudNoLotus · 30/12/2017 23:43

@hibbledibble i love my washable pads.

Far more comfortable & softer than disposable , no odour , they dont prolong bleeding like tampons can & are environmentally friendly 😊

Wish id used them years ago instead of tampons tbh.

EmilyfromLondon · 30/12/2017 23:49

God - I remember a PE lesson at school once when I didn't have my PE kit and had to do the lesson in my knickers and panicking about what to do with the tampon string!

PoffertjePlease · 30/12/2017 23:54

I tuck. But I’ve recently discovered Thinx pants, which are a game changer.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 31/12/2017 00:08

Like NormaNameChange, I don't unwind the strings on my lillets until I want to remove them. Stops them being drenched and stops me occasionally pulling the bloody string and yank the tampon out whilst attempting to wipe myself.

pasanda · 31/12/2017 00:11

Interesting and amusing thread. It seems it's 50/50 with this issue then.

Thank god for that - I thought I was the weird one she was so flabbergasted with the way I do it Grin

Eatingwormswithwine I'll do what I want thanks.

Poff

I just looked them up, they look interesting. What style did you choose! Can you tell us more about how good they are? Sizing? Etc

HuskyMcClusky · 31/12/2017 00:20

Move it out the way! Absolutely disgusting not to

It is a tiny piece of string which may get damp with your own urine.

Get. A. Fucking. Grip.

Cannot stand the competitive squeamishness on mumsnet, and calling other women ‘disgusting’.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 31/12/2017 00:20

I tuck the string. Frankly a couple of drips of wee on the string is the very least of my problems when I have my period.

I’m one extreme to the other these days - half the time I couldn’t possibly change the tampon every time I wee because it would be dry & hurt. The rest of the time I couldn’t possibly wee as often as I need to change the flooded tampon. It’s a joy getting older.

ShimmeringBollox · 31/12/2017 00:25

Mooncups are so last year, free bleeding is all the rage now sweetie.

PoffertjePlease · 31/12/2017 00:37

Annie I got the ‘sport’ style. I’ve only tried them on day 2 of my period or later so far, but no leaks yet so I need to be brave and try them on the heaviest day (which for me is pretty light, to be fair).

I like them. It was a strange feeling at first, but then quite liberating. Quick rinse in the sink at the end of the day then I bung them straight in a dark wash. They wash fine in with a normal dark load.

I plan to buy a couple more pairs so I can ditch tampons completely (except for when swimming!).
