Just why?! Can anyone explain to me exactly what he has done to deserve it?

He's no longer MP for Sheffield Hallam. Lost seat in last election.

Trashboat · 31/12/2017 11:46

My old boss got an OBE for services to the sector he volunteered in.

He was always anti-establishment and I am a Republican. We had a lot in common politically and we're great friends.

As soon as he accepted this award and all the pomp an circumstance that went with it, I lost a bit of respect for him.

I think these awards are absolutely meaningless, smug, self-congratulatory bollocks and always like it when I hear of people who have refused them.

Snufflepots - I didn't realise that the honours list was decided back in March! Thank you for enlightening me.

For me, it's not the fact that he was nominated but the fact he accepted! He must have some opinion of himself. Self serving in the end like all politicians it seems. Maybe in 30 years when he's actually done something that's stood the test of time, it would be appropriate. His crowning achievement was losing his seat whilst his party was massacred to less than 10 MPs from 60 odd. I'd be embarrassed to accept anything but a wooden spoon. Clearly he doesn't hold himself accountable in any way. Odd.

mari652 · 31/12/2017 16:11

He's a wet sponge whose moment came when he was in coalition and he was shown to be weak and wobbly. No reason for a knighthood except convention

MongerTruffle · 31/12/2017 16:13

You really can't complain about a party not doing what they promised to do in their manifesto when they didn't even win the election.

ForalltheSaints · 31/12/2017 16:14

No politician should receive an honour in my opinion. Except military ones if they serve before or after their time as a politician.

There are probably a few other groups who should not- party donors, anyone who is a non-dom for tax purposes, for example.

I laughed at Sir Ringo Starr- he's not even the best drummer in his own family!

crunchymint · 31/12/2017 16:16

Only a fraction of the honours are really deserved anyway.

Vitalogy · 31/12/2017 16:17

He's got fwends that decide these things.

Sludgecolours · 31/12/2017 16:31

I'm pleased he's won an award. Someone needs to stick up for outward looking international liberal values in these days of insularity, fear and polarisation. He was in an impossible position in the coalition. Damned when he couldn't prevent something, with the Tories taking credit for the things he did achieve.

QuiQuaiQuod · 31/12/2017 17:00

CleGGGG????????????????? WTF?
And RINGO??????????????????? WTF?
Barry Gibb?
Darcy?
WHo chooses these?

IMO Justin Fletcher deserves one for the joy he and his Mr Tumble character have brought to children with learning difficulties.

Not for banging on a drum or being a wet fish, or singing 'tragedy'.

these ''honours'' are a tragedy!

Liverbird77 · 31/12/2017 18:13

I think Kenny Dagliesh should've had a knighthood and his wife Marina should've been made a Dame. They have done so much for so many.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 01/01/2018 01:43

Nominate him liverbird.
