Just why?! Can anyone explain to me exactly what he has done to deserve it?

And Jilly rubbish Cooper.Services to literature? WTF?

MexicanBob · 30/12/2017 22:36

It's being English. We love a loser. The bigger, the better.
His one definite achievement that I can name is that he stopped me voting LibDem and I've been voting for them (& the Liberals) since the 1970s.

He had proportional representation in the bag and the stupid bastard blew it. Man's a total bloody fool.

shoofly · 30/12/2017 22:36

70% of the honours list is made up of "ordinary" people who you won't have heard of. Radio 4 pm had interviews with delighted people who felt that their recognition in the list was for their charity or the work they were doing or the cause they were supporting. They saw value in it.

Funnyface1 · 30/12/2017 22:36

Recieving a knighthood now officially means nothing.

Receiving, bloody phone.

MissEliza · 30/12/2017 22:39

Great glad to hear the majority go to 'ordinary' people but I resent it going to someone just for doing his already well rewarded job.

Bourdic · 30/12/2017 22:40

Why need recognition for doing something you feel is right? Virtue is its own reward. Full stop

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 30/12/2017 22:42

Well do you know it’s all gone to shit without him. There would not have been a Brexit referendum at all if the coalition had been in place. The deeper austerity measures came in after the Lib Dem’s went. I think history might be a little kinder to him than now. I think we didn’t realise how much the Lib Dem’s put the brakes on until they weren’t there any more.

Bourdic · 30/12/2017 22:43

And the ‘ordinary’ people don’t get the bloody knighthoods or higher honours. I could just about stomach a ‘citizens award’ with NO celebs, politicians, top civil servants etc but the current system is hierarchical and patronising rubbish

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 30/12/2017 22:44

Also the headmistress can get nominated by anybody.

peachgreen · 30/12/2017 22:45

Nick Clegg was an excellent MEP, an active and committed local MP (and remains so) and a passionate Home Affairs spokesperson long before he was party leader.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 30/12/2017 22:45

I quite like Nick Clegg. In the same way that I quite like Ikea plates.

Maybe they should get a knighthood too.

peachgreen · 30/12/2017 22:47

@CauliflowerSqueeze That made me chuckle. To be fair, knighthoods are a bunch of antiquated nonsense that should be scrapped.

Chocfingers · 30/12/2017 22:49

Why has Ringo Starr got a knighthood?

expatinscotland · 30/12/2017 22:49

He's such a limp biscuit.

AndromedaPerseus · 30/12/2017 22:49

I think it's to make up for losing his seat so spectacularly

honeysucklejasmine · 30/12/2017 22:49

I agree with Tom and I cannot understand how the LibDems get blamed for every bad policy to come from the coalition. When people talked about what they liked from the coalition, they were usually LD policies. Tories have taken all the credit and none of the blame.

TammySwansonTwo · 30/12/2017 22:52

Agreed Tom - I fear Clegg was trying too hard to temper the ruthless bastards that he managed to destroy his reputation and his party in the process. Anyone who looks at what happened after the coalition ended can see that Clegg clearly took some hits to prevent far worse.

thegreatbeyond · 30/12/2017 22:54

But...he was sorry about the tuition fees. He was so, so, sorry.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 30/12/2017 23:01

Knighthood promise in exchange for tuition fees and no PR referendum? I think Tories bribed him.

CoffeeAndCupcakes85 · 30/12/2017 23:09

Totally agree with Tom.

littletinyme1 · 31/12/2017 00:56

I respect Nick Clegg. I suspect no-one is more sorry for his coalition decision than he is. I would vote for him tomorrow. He is an intelligent, articulate and decent man. He made a terrible mistake and will never be forgiven for it. Look at how bad things are now and imagine there had been no Nick Clegg...they'd be even worse for the poor and vulnerable in society

Eltonjohnssyrup · 31/12/2017 02:05

peach exactly. Nick was my MP. I disagree passionately with him on many issues. I am not the same political stripe as him. But I still voted for him sometime because I knew he was thoughtful and listened and would sometimes do the right thing even if lost him votes.

What did we get instead of him? Momentum backed Jared O'Mara who beats up and threatens women.

Yorkshirebetty · 31/12/2017 11:38

I am in his former constituency. Believe me he was not a good local MP.
