Oh fucking hell, I am going to have to call in sick on my NYE night shift!

I've got tonsillitis. I am probably feeling as ill as I have ever felt as an adult. Temp intermittently going up, along with shivers and shakes. Agony speaking or swallowing. Incredibly weak. One side of throat visibly blown up.

I have penicillin, I am gargling with Corsodyl every couple of hours. I am taking cocodamol and ibuprofen.

I am supposed to be working tomorrow night shift on labour ward. I got the whole of Christmas off in return for doing this shift. I also had two days off three weeks ago because of that crappy virus going around.

Fuck! Any ideas what to do?

Tonsillitis is horrible! It can’t be helped, you obviously feel v guilty, just let them know - either today or tomorrow morning.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/12/2017 10:18

Viviennemary bitchplopping again? Quelle surprise

Ignore it OP, you are not well enough to work. Hope you feel better soon.

hellsbells99 · 30/12/2017 10:21

My 20 year old DD has just has this. She was ill with it - sky high temp and in a lot of pain. The antibios kicked in and she started to feel a lot better after 48 hours but still wasn't well enough to leave the house for another couple of days.
How long have you had the antibios for?
Get well soon.

missadasmith · 30/12/2017 10:21

my DH had raging tonsillitis when I had DC2. Doctors and midwifes recommended to stay away birth due to risk of bacterial infection (he had to look after DC1 in anyways so this wasn't an issue).

Bit surprised you would be allowed to work in your role with a bacterial infection. aren't there H&S implications? I am not a medical so may talk bullshit.

CottonSock · 30/12/2017 10:22

Ring now so they can sort out cover

LittleDoritt · 30/12/2017 10:22

ABs can kick in really quickly. I would do what you're doing and see how you go over the next 24 hours. It's a crap position to be in - if you have had the whole of Christmas off then I would definitely be trying to make it in in your position if the ABs will make it possible.

HTKB · 30/12/2017 10:23

Started ABs yesterday lunch time so they may have kicked in by tomorrow. I was actually feeling pretty good in the night but it started to go down hill again at about 5am.

OP posts:
woodhill · 30/12/2017 10:31

Rest and recover op

woodhill · 30/12/2017 10:31

No night shift if you are unwell

flocktheclock · 30/12/2017 10:34

I reckon you might make it. Continue ABs and regular analgesia.
If you have a fever still tomorrow after lunch then make the call.

Rotten situation to be in op. Flowers

EmilyfromLondon · 30/12/2017 10:35

I had tonsillitis about 7 years ago. It was far worse than when I broke my leg last year. So you are justified in not going to work

TotallyWingingIt · 30/12/2017 10:35

Sorry to hear you're unwell. My friend has just been through the same situation but was xmas eve/day. They requested a doctors note to prove she was ill. Maybe it's worth getting one just incase. Id ring today so they have more time to cover your shift. I'd also say no night shift if you are ill, you'll end up run down and back to square one. Get better soonThanks

Accidentallyexisting · 30/12/2017 10:36

I had tonsillitis once at the start of my dream job training course.....I had to leave 2 days in as was too sick I actually couldn’t physically do it.....I lost my job.....I still know I had no option even with losing the opportunity to continue that sick. Get well soon op

museumum · 30/12/2017 10:36

I’d have been fucking furious if my midwife had bacterial tonsillitis when delivering ds. The first person to touch him! Me desperately run down and exhausted!!!
Makes a mockery of any kind of infection control.
Do not work.
Please.

@BoreOfWhabylon hahahahaha what is bitchplopping?! Grin

OP I agree with everyone else, unfortunately you can't help being poorly...you need lots of rest, and keep your fluids up. Ignore that silly lady having a go at you x

Boredbeforeievenbegan · 30/12/2017 10:41

Please don’t go. Apart from anything else if you rest you will recover much more quickly. Last time I had tonsillitis I was hallucinating the pain/temperature was so bad!

EmilyfromLondon · 30/12/2017 10:42

They requested a doctors note to prove she was ill
Would you be able to find a doctor that was open on Christmas Day, let alone one that would issue a sick note for two days?

Of course you can’t go in to work with tonsillitis, especially your line of work. Phone work now to warn them so they can arrange cover for you.

stressedoutfred · 30/12/2017 10:46

I’d call today so they have an idea there’s a risk you’ll be off. It’s up to them if they decide to risk it and hope you’re in, or arrange now to have someone on standby

Hope you’re feeling better soon!

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2017 10:47

"IsaSchmisa

Viviennemary is a renowned fuckwit round these parts"
I agree her post on this thread was misjudged but do not agree with this statement in general.
Op hope you're better soon

dontbesillyhenry · 30/12/2017 10:47

Ignore Vivienne she admitted she has complete contempt for health care professionals on a previous thread and appears to be a miserable old crow in general

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2017 10:47

Again that's not the Viviennemary I recognise

gingergenius · 30/12/2017 10:48

Phone and warn. Keep an eye on symptoms and go in ifcfeelibg better. As it's a labour ward they may tell you to stay off because of infection risks surely but forewarned is forearmed I think,

Hope you feel better soon.

😂 at bitchplopping!!!
