Oh fucking hell, I am going to have to call in sick on my NYE night shift!

I've got tonsillitis. I am probably feeling as ill as I have ever felt as an adult. Temp intermittently going up, along with shivers and shakes. Agony speaking or swallowing. Incredibly weak. One side of throat visibly blown up.

I have penicillin, I am gargling with Corsodyl every couple of hours. I am taking cocodamol and ibuprofen.

I am supposed to be working tomorrow night shift on labour ward. I got the whole of Christmas off in return for doing this shift. I also had two days off three weeks ago because of that crappy virus going around.

Fuck! Any ideas what to do?

Oh goodness. I had to do that this year. I had one day at work last week, and was carrying the majority of the work like the hero I am
then had to call in sick with D&V. I still feel guilty and embarrassed.
Poor OP. I hope you feel better soon, such is life.

I would call in today because it gives the team manager time to book cover. You can't help being ill.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 30/12/2017 09:55

WTF is wrong with you Viviennemary?
Your stance is ridiculous

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/12/2017 09:57

Vivienne you've obviously never had TRUE tonsillitis then? It's not just a sore throat where you can still go to work you know.

And yes you can still type on your phone or ipad when you have it too. 🤨

ProperLavs · 30/12/2017 09:58

viviennemary that's a mighty big stick you're clutching.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/12/2017 09:59

Who cares if you're not convinced Viv?

HTKB · 30/12/2017 09:59

Thanks guys. I will give it til tomorrow morning.... we are well staffed enough that they won't try and find cover, they will just cope. You have made me feel better (not physically, sadly)

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2017 10:00

Vivienne, Ive posted from HDU oxygen dependant.

JustVent · 30/12/2017 10:01

“Be kind to yourself” - I hate that saying. It’s so bloody unhelpful. As is the saying “it is what it is.”

As if the OP is going to call up and saying “I’ve got tonsillitis and I need to be kind to myself.” Hmm

Op that’s a shit position to be in. I would call sooner rather than later though

Chienrouge · 30/12/2017 10:02

Viviennemary I’ve noticed you always seem to think yours is the only opinion that matters and we should all bow down to your superior knowledge.
FWIW I was whatsapping friends when I was in intensive care with sepsis. Probably should still have got up and gone to work though shouldn’t I, as I could move my thumbs and all.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/12/2017 10:02

I'll probably ring in today.

Chances are you won't be much better tomorrow, sadly.
Good luck.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/12/2017 10:02

Good grief what's up with some of you this morning? Living up to your name there JustVent?

Thirtyrock39 · 30/12/2017 10:05

My son had tonsillitis back in may was really poorly with it first two days but took him to the gp on the second day and got antibiotics and (as I was worried about time off work) I asked the gp how long he would need to be off school . The gp said once antibiotics kicked in and his temp was normal no risk of infection so fine to go back- he was fine the third day - so I'd be tenured to see how you are tomorrow before ringing in but obviously don't go in if you feel terrible

Snowman123 · 30/12/2017 10:08

Phone them now.
The medicine may have kicked in by tomorrow and hopefully you will start to feel better.
If your still ill, then don't beat yourself up.......it cannot be helped x

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 30/12/2017 10:08

OP you have my sympathy I had tonsillitis 3 years ago and have never felt so ill in my life, I ended up spending most of Christmas day snoozing on sofa missing my dd opening most of her presents.

Unfortunate timing for you, however I would phone up the day of your shift to tell them, I know my manager would have the attitude well how do you know you won't be well enough tomorrow? Hope your feeling better soon op Flowers

ItWillBeFridaySoon · 30/12/2017 10:09

I've had tonsillitis and know how miserable it can be so I can understand how you feel and due to the area you work you definitely shouldn't go in. However, speaking as a manager, please phone now and not tomorrow. Because someone else may be "wobbly" and your lead may want to have someone on standby in case the second person calls in sick too. Please give them the advance warning.

Viviennemary · 30/12/2017 10:11

I agree phone sooner rather than later if you feel you certainly won't be well enough to go to work.

HermioneAndMsJones · 30/12/2017 10:12

My experience with tonsillitis and antibiotics is that within 24h you should feel much more human. The pain will have gone as well as the fever etc.. (assuming the penicillin is the right ABs for it... I’ve had a few cases when I wasn’t)

I would wait until tomorrow and assess.

HermioneAndMsJones · 30/12/2017 10:12

Btw, what I would t do is to on the ward with tonsillitis and without being on AB as you will be contagious to the women and the babies there.....

Vivmary what a nasty piece of work you are. The woman is obviously ill, and feeling terribly guilty about it. I would be feeling the same, but I would feel a whole lot worse if I passed infection on, or worse still made a mistake because I felt so ill. You ring in sick sweetie, they will know you are ill just by the sound of your voice. Tell them you will work over Easter to make up for it.

Ellendegeneres · 30/12/2017 10:16

Oh Vivienne do get a life.
My throat was almost swollen completely shut, tonsils blocking airway and immediately put in a chair and wheeled to ward where interventions started and oxygen given- I was still well enough to furiously write on paper to my mum ‘I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL!!!!’ Cause she thought I was putting it on.

flocktheclock · 30/12/2017 10:17

Similar role to you op. Can't you get some ABs today and you might just be able to make it tomorrow night?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/12/2017 10:17

I had tonsillitis earlier this year and the AB didn't truly kick in for a week. Had to go back to the GP after 5 days I was that ill. Honestly I've not felt that ill since I had gallstones.

OP try and drink as much as you can. Being dehydrated made me feel worse I think.
