To not think animal charities are not that important

Just making me think someone I know very well is often posting about making huge donations to a local animal shelter
Basically a dog rehoming centre
But i don’t think they actually regime many most of them just end up living in this dog shelter
Personally I’m not sure if it’s more humane to end their suffering for some dogs that won’t get a proper home
I mean wonder how many dogs there are out there that are homeless ? Day just in the uk alone

I don’t jus when ever I see these posts I just think oh that could have gone to a more worthwhile cause that actually helps children babies adults humans

And don’t get me wrong I do adore animals
I just prefer putting humans first

To write about any charity a person supports is fine, its needs and how people can help, forthcoming fundraiser, that's all great.

To write the actual £ amount donated could be a bit look how great I am.

I have been involved with setting up charities, people can give to who they like but the richest charities in the UK are animal ones.

Pannacott · 30/12/2017 05:50

On a personal level, I agree with you OP. I read a post on here about a 7 week old baby being harmed by its parents, or a 3 year old child going hungry, and my heart breaks. I am against cruelty to animals, and factory farming, but it doesn't move me on the same level. I find it hard to understand people who prioritise animals over human children (especially when so many seem to go so). BUT - that's just my view ultimately. I'm sure the animal lovers feel the same way. It is what it is.

WillowWept · 30/12/2017 06:05

Life doesn't have to be either or

except when it comes to financial donations it almost certainly is: money is finite so every £ spent on X is potentially a £ not spent on Y.

Personally I find it very strange that anyone would prioritise an animal over a human but unfortunately that's a choice people are entitled to make.

LardLizard · 30/12/2017 07:28

Was only saying how much I raised in response to replies of raise your own for a human charity then

And I do love animals I just personally think when I see these posts, oh that money could be better spent
But I totally accept that just my opinion

Donate to which cause you want.

Personally dog charities are close to my heart so that's who I chose to donate too. Quite a lot of money, and rarely to other causes.

Don't care what you think of me for doing that either tbh.

MushyPeasAndPie · 30/12/2017 07:33

Donating to charity is a personal thing so YABU to say other people's charities are less important than those you consider to be more worthy.

I have two charities in my will, one human and one animal and I am contemplating adding a third animal charity next time it gets amended because they mean something to me. Thankfully we are all different and have different priorities so money gets spread around.

Skarossinkplunger · 30/12/2017 07:34

I don’t donate to religious or military charities or to Cancer Research UK and I would chose an animal charity over all others. That’s the beauty of free choice.

MushyPeasAndPie · 30/12/2017 07:36

And I do love animals I just personally think when I see these posts, oh that money could be better spent

But it's their money (not yours) to spend on whatever they like. They could blow it all on an expensive handbag or a holiday but instead they choose something charitable that means something to them and good on them. Whenever someone donates to a charity I think good for them even if it is one I would never choose to donate to.

NotACleverName · 30/12/2017 07:41

Goady fucker.

PDSA pisses me off. Cant afford vet bills for a pet? Dont keep pets then! I would never donate to them.

Because people's life/circumstances are set in stone and never, ever change after getting a pet.

notsohippychick · 30/12/2017 07:41

I agree but I understand that people don’t have the same views as me.

Everyone’s experience is personal. Mine comes from having two disabled children and who have benefited from charities that I’ll continue to donate to.

LardLizard · 30/12/2017 07:42

Ska, why not cancer research out of interest ?

Some people like myself feel that animal lives are equal to human,

Some people cannot accept this.

Each to their own.

Natalies85 · 30/12/2017 08:02

I never understand people who say we should put humans first in this situation. Well, I do get that people are morally more important than humans. What I mean is that unless you give all of your disposable income to a charity that helps people then your argument is morally weak. Next time you have a meal out, expensive coffee, holiday - think about how much more the money you've spent would mean to a homeless person or a child needing medical supplies in a developing country. But nobody ever calls someone in starbucks for not spending their coffee money on buying a homeless person a Tesco sandwich

Oh Give Over OP

Clandestino · 30/12/2017 08:05

I do, I’ve already raised over 1k this year alone for sands
And more than that last year

Congratulations. Here, have a Biscuit as there's no emoji for a medal.
Charity giving/raising is a free choice. You can decide to give whoever whatever and why should anyone be judged for that.

Reallytired17 · 30/12/2017 08:06

Environmentally humans are least concern I suppose.

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 30/12/2017 08:10

What a horrific view point to have. So what you're saying is that animals have less rights than humans?

How could you possibly know what that animal shelter does? So the dogs have a bed and are fed - but they should be dead?!

I give money to Dogs Trust every month and my husband regularly does sponsored events for a beagle charity.

What a sorry and sad person you must be.

I support Guide Dogs because DM was blind and that was the charity we chose to raise money for when she died. Other than that I rarely donate to human charities. My choice and, as it doesn’t affect anyone else, my business.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 30/12/2017 08:31

What I find a bit odd about animal shelters and the like is that we routinely raise animals in pretty awful conditions with the sole purpose of killing them. I don't understand what is different about cats, dogs and ponies that make them more worthy of saving than pigs etc. But people are free to do what they want with their money even if I don't understand it.

KathArtic · 30/12/2017 08:37

At my supermarket the local pet charity's trolley is always fuller than the foodbank's. I always pop a tin of cat food or dog biscuits in.

I've never donated to the food bank, and never will.

Bigkingdom · 30/12/2017 08:52

Someone has to care for the animals wellbeing. Its usually a humans fault why the poor animals are in a shelter in the first place. I mostly prefer animals to humans, no judgement from them.

ButteredScone · 30/12/2017 08:54

It is difficult, though, because animal charities do sometimes lose a sense of proportion which can result in poor management of funds.

All my pets are rescues and I have donated to animal charities. I'm on a lot of email lists for Dog charities in particular. I get regular requests for 'Fundraising for Sammy/Alfie/Cindy - £3k for vet bills needed'. And then people do marathons or garden sales or whatever for one particular dog's treatment. Which is of course very sweet, and the charities support this.

However, I then get emails from the same charities : 'Emergency PTS situation. Healthy you dog but no room in the shelter - can anyone help?'

Yes, I can help: Make some tough decisions about the cost of vet bills and don't use up goodwill and potential funds on expensive individual cases.

CocaColaTruck · 30/12/2017 08:55

YANBU.

I give to wildlife charities but not to pet charities. There are far too many dogs and cats around anyway, why keep them alive in a prison?

The money is much better spent elsewhere.

Steaksauce · 30/12/2017 09:38

I'd rather donate and act to help the planet that human overpopulation is destroying.

I can't really comprehend saving individuals over that tbh.

Without a healthy planet to sustain us, every human and every animal dies.

And we're destroying it. Why this doesn't bother more people is beyond me.
