She's middle class all of a sudden. Keep thinking of Richard Briers and Felicity Kendall.

Go on, tell me to grow up.

Fraid dh and I are the endearment couple, and I know it probably annoys some people, with our darlings and babes, but we don't care. Life's too short, we like it, so every one else can go take a hike

theprecious · 24/04/2007 10:41

my dh calls me precious (hence the nickname) or preshy and all my family take the mickey but I don't care.

chocolattegirl · 24/04/2007 10:42

A bit childish to smirk really - what's wrong with a bit of endearment between fiances?

Dinosaur · 24/04/2007 10:42

BIL calls DSis "Minx". Which I think is quite cute really.

bakedpotato · 24/04/2007 10:45

When we were in the west country recently a middleaged female assistant in a Clarks called me 'dear lady'
Loved it
'Are these the right size, dear lady?'
'Would you like to pay over here, dear lady?'
[to a colleague] 'Could you put the payment through for this dear lady?'
It was thoroughly pleasant
But then I call everyone darling
My children, their friends, DH (esp when I'm cross), my parents, my sister, school-gate friends
I can't be expected to remember everyone's names ffs

chocolattegirl · 24/04/2007 10:45

That was my xp's name for me . Must have been more common than I thought .

chocolattegirl · 24/04/2007 10:46

Minx I meant - not dear lady.

Actually I like dear lady better.

I use sweetheart for kids ...not just my own . Can't help it ...it just comes out.

I must admit I never ever thought that terms of endearment was class issue

Overrun · 24/04/2007 10:51

I use 'sweetie' or 'sweet pea' or 'love' for the dcs.

Goodness me!

I bet you people say pardon, toilet and pleased to meet you.

You can forget anychance of bagging Wills yer low class lot!

BonnieDarko · 24/04/2007 10:54

Could never call dh darling, it just wouldn't be right We only use soppy terms of endearment in a sarcastic way.

Our last words to each other last night as we went to sleep were "night night fuck face" "night night arsehole"

Works for us

JodieG1 · 24/04/2007 10:54

Me and dh call each other babe, always have done and I really like it. We call the dc's sweetie, darling, sweetheart and others.

BonnieDarko · 24/04/2007 10:56

Also, I call dd 'duck'. Wtf? Where did that come from?

I thought those obsessed by class are the one's with all the cash who haven't been taught to share properly!

The ones obsessed by class now are the ones whose ancestors either shagged their way into it or who bought titles etc.

They're no classier than the rest of us and probably less classy than most.

It's just so outside my experience - my parents and grandparents refer to each other by their names, my dp's parents...well actually they don't speak to each other, so by default no darlings going on there. BIL and SIL, B and SIL names again.

It's not like my actor friends calling everyone darling, they'll freely admit it's because they can never remember who everyone is. It's not gushing, it just sounds twee.

And it grates, but I should get over it. Agreed.

I don't think there is anything wrong with calling each other darling or babe either for that matter.

Dp calls me babe and I like it.
In fact we use darlin and babe so much that DD1 now shouts up the stairs 'babe' to me! LOL!
