To hide from the bin men?

I'm usually out when our bins are collected but due to Christmas at home today. Our bins have been collected and it made remember that my Mum used to make my siblings and I hide from the bin men when we were younger because she was embarrassed at how much rubbish she put out. We would have to put the tv or lights off and generally pretend to not be in.

Why? Did anyone else's family have this rule?

Unusual!

My bin men came Wednesday as usual collection Monday. It was snowing and freezing cold. They got rather stuck due to layout of my road! I slung dressing gown on and ran them down a big box of shortbread, some chocolates and a flask of tea and paper cups!

I doubt they are worried about my bin - maybe about me!!! (But hopefully just grateful!)

BattleCuntGalactica · 29/12/2017 15:35

Is this for bloody real?

TruJay · 29/12/2017 15:42

Not us either, we used to hide from my drunk uncle though Grin

IrkThePurist · 29/12/2017 15:43

No its really not usual! The DC's love the bin men because I put the household monsters in the bins and the bin men take them away. I'm pretty fearless when it comes to ejecting toilet monsters and the like Grin

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:44

No never as it's not like they're going to knock on your door and proclaim you have too much rubbish (unless they did that back in the day?) They have stickers now they're supposed to put on your bin lid if they're to going to empty. The recycling bin is pointless as they everything is banned so may as well not bother!

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:45

not

AlessandroVasectomi · 29/12/2017 15:45

I think you should always hide from manual workers and definitely make sure your children don’t have to see them. It could be very upsetting for them.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:45

We do have certain other choice relatives we hide from though...Hmm

I remember some unwanted people knocking at the door. My DS stared at them through the window with a blank expression (he was 4) and my DD who was 3 shouted 'Go away' repeatedly.

My embarrassed dad was babysitting at the time whilst I was at work.

xyzandabc · 29/12/2017 15:57

Our recycling bin is full...i had to take a spade to it yesterday to crush down the stuff*

I made my youngest 2 (7 and 5) jump up and down in our recycling wheelie bin on Wednesday to compact it. They thought it was great!

ChickenPaws · 29/12/2017 15:59

I hide from the binmen because I don’t want to get into trouble for weighing the bin down with cat litter. I use wood pellet litter now so it’s a bit better.

The bin men at my previous house used to shout at me and refuse to take the bin for the slightest thing that was wrong. The bin men here seem okay though.

MammaTJ · 29/12/2017 16:05

I have been having a major de-clutter in recent months, think Hoarders!

I find going out to the bin men and saying sorry but it need to go helps and makes sure they have taken everything! One particular manic week, there was a full wheelie bin and 20 bin bags! They took the lot!

If I had hidden, they may have stuck to the rules and only taken the bin full! I was so grateful!

youarenotkiddingme · 29/12/2017 16:05

Pass I was wearing my onesie, my ugg style boots and ankle length dressing gown (such a beautiful soft thing!) with its hood up!
I'm surprised no one started a MN thread about it if they witnessed me.

However the bin men seemed grateful, frank and ate and then played ice skating until they could move again Grin

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 16:15

Haha kidding they'll have seen you coming alright Grin

StarWarsFanatic · 29/12/2017 16:31

I remember getting really excited when the bin men came when I was a child and shouting to my mum that Dennis was here. She was confused as I didn't know any of the bin men. It went on for a while before she realised that the bin lorry said Dennis on the front Grin and still calls bin day Dennis day.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 29/12/2017 16:38

This entirely confirms my theory that my dear old mum was indeed totally bonkers even before the Alzheimer's got her. It was one of those repressed memories that only occurred to me today as the bin men took the metric ton of cardboard away from my house.

Probably just as well it was 7am and still dark Grin

ChickaaaaannDipppaaaaassss · 29/12/2017 17:27

We hid from the Provident lady in our house Grin
Or told her Mum wasn't in whilst she hid!

OurMiracle1106 · 29/12/2017 17:32

I can remember when I was little the bun men used to lift me up so I could push the button on the lorry.

My old bin men when I lived in a house as an adult would take my bins from outside my front door (when I first moved in I assumed it was every 2 weeks but my New borough was weekly, I did ask the bin men why and he said that it’s cos I was always polite and thanked them and no one really does that).

user1499722317 · 29/12/2017 17:53

Chickaaaaan that's what we did too! Alternated with hiding from the rentman. Never hid from the bin men though!

TruJay · 29/12/2017 17:58

ChickaaaaannDipppaaaaassss

Yep 👍🏻 "My mum said she isn't here" GrinGrin

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 19:40

ChickaaaaannDipppaaaaassss Haha I bet that provident woman was my Mum as she used to be one of the collectors!!

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 19:41

It was crazy as back then they let a woman on her own go out on own door to door collecting the money and the bloody man waited in the van!!! There should have been 2; it was very shady!
