To serve a massive sausage roll for dinner?

QueenNefertitty · 29/12/2017 10:13

DM and her husband are coming for dinner with me, ExDP and DS.

I have a massive m&s Yule sausage roll (like basically a sausagemeat Wellington) that needs eating today. Serves 8.

WIBU to serve this with mashed potatoes and green veg for dinner? Or is that grim? It looks very delicious- but effectively it is just an oversized sausage roll such as you
might sneakily eat from greggs and hope you don't bump into anyone you know midway through it.

I will make a chocolate fondant for after, if that redeems it, at all....

DM used to make a sausage meat plait. Same thing!

MsHarry · 29/12/2017 10:40

Roast some chunky cut apples and put cider in the gravy, instant upgrade!

HermionesRightHook · 29/12/2017 10:40

Sounds delish, call it a Wellington and put some nice veg with it to cut through the stodge and you're golden.

SingaSong12 · 29/12/2017 10:40

Sounds lovely and something different

viques · 29/12/2017 10:40

Can you find a bit of holly to stick on the top to make it look more festive! It sounds fine to me, see if you can rustle up a bit of cranberry sauce or jelly, some gravy and a bottle of plonk and what's not to love.

If anybody says anything then casually mention, (lie) , that you saw it as a suggestion by Mary Berry/Delia/Nigella as the perfect antidote to over rich Christmas meals.

genuineidiot · 29/12/2017 10:41

Do it. Don't know about others but I love simple things like that.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/12/2017 10:41

Sounds delicious! I think my husband would eat one of those all to himself. Grin

QueenNefertitty · 29/12/2017 10:41

Haha- thanks all

Pork wellington is very tongue in cheek... trying to sell it as that honestly, wouldn't get me very far in these parts

Nobody Jewish Muslim or vegan.

At least not since I last saw them. They've had a few days to sit around though, so maybe if trivial pursuit lost its appeal...

This meal sounds like proper winter comfort food. I'd be more than happy with it and the fact that someone else is cooking. Go for it!

LagunaBubbles · 29/12/2017 10:45

I don't get this food snobbery at all, anyone that had the cheek to laugh at anything I served them wouldn't be getting invited again. Served with mash and veggies sounds lovely OP.

If ex DP is an ex he doesn't get to specify what he wants to eat. Serve whatever you see fit. Ex can like it or lump it..

And it's not just any old sausage roll it's an M & S sausage roll. Wink. Makes all the difference. And sounds yummy.

KindergartenKop · 29/12/2017 10:46

What time do you want me?

DeepanKrispanEven · 29/12/2017 10:46

You've just given me an idea about how to use up the excess sausage meat I bought for stuffing. Thanks!

QueenNefertitty · 29/12/2017 10:47

@ellie

When we were together it would have been "eat up or shut up"- but now we get on far far better - and as such he is treated with the same consideration as any other welcome friend/ guest

May need to review that policy though ... Grin

DS made his first ever Sausage Plait in the run up to Christmas. Served with mash, fresh veg and gravy it's a firm family favourite. I'd be very happy if that's what you offered me.

QueenNefertitty · 29/12/2017 10:48

@kindergarten

6 please!

Also all this talk of sausage plait is giving me major school dinner nostalgia ...

Sounds delicious!

Sounds lovely yes do this obvious with the gravy

Butternutissquashed · 29/12/2017 10:54

Sounds lovely. I'm a bit disappointed though that I didn't see it when I was in there. I may have to go and see if they have any in for New Year. I'd be really happy if someone served me that!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/12/2017 10:56

Definitely use up the sausage roll, it'll be very tasty and much appreciated, I would imagine ! 😄

Oldraver · 29/12/2017 10:56

No serve it up it sounds brill.

I make something similar...sausagemeat or good sausages with onions and sage in a readymade pastry. DS helps and we do it plait style. We call it a big sausage roll

HolgerDanske · 29/12/2017 10:58

It sounds delicious and I would be very happy to be given that (as long as there is loads of gravy!!). I also love sprouts so if you have any leftover I’d be happy to polish those off for you in return for an invite 😄

Emmasmum2013 · 29/12/2017 10:59

I saw that in M&S too - it looked really good. I'd b made up to be served that!

MelonKnee · 29/12/2017 10:59

LOL your challenge today OP is to serve it up calling it Pork Wellington........whilst keeping a straight face Grin
