To want a laundry room upstairs

Just that, I dream of having a laundry room upstairs so I don't traipse up and down the stairs with so much dirty/clean laundry.

One day I'm hoping it will happen when I build my own home.

Does anyone have an upstairs laundry room? Does it work well with the layout of house?

Yes, we put a loo in under the stairs then converted a seperate loo on the first floor landing into a laundry room. It has just enough space for the w/m with the t/d above it. I love it, it makes a huge difference to the traipsing up and down the stairs malarkey!

I never would have thought of a laundry upstairs but if course you’re right, it would be amazing! Only problem I can foresee is that almost all the water leaks I’ve ever had have come from the washing machine. Would rather leaks downstairs than upstairs

Yanbu, we have an upstairs laundry room and it's a revelation (it's pretty standard where we live in the USA). However we also tumble dry so if you line dry, you'll be taking laundry down and back up anyway....

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 28/12/2017 19:22

I had one with an indoor washing line - can’t recommend it too highly.

PortlyWino · 28/12/2017 19:23

We used to have one in out last house with room also for the ironing board to be permanently left up. It was marvellous. As pp said though, it's a pain if you want to line dry.

Jelly0naplate · 28/12/2017 19:24

Yanbu we have the washing machine and dryer in the bathroom and it's great, sling the dirty stuff in to wash, then into the dryer (I do try and get it outside in the summer) then back into the bedrooms

Aturkeyisnotjustforchristmas · 28/12/2017 19:26

I have one upstairs. It has a sink and my washing machine and tumble drier. There's also a large storage cupboard and room for an airer. I love it.

WaitrosePigeon · 28/12/2017 19:27

I do. It’s good to be honest.

Upsy1981 · 28/12/2017 19:53

I don't have my w/m upstairs but I do have a room where all dirty laundry goes, there is a maiden up all the time, the ironing basket is in there, the ironing board is up all the time and I have a clothes rail for things to be hung on after ironing. So it doesn't eliminate the traipsing up and down but it does keep everything mostly contained in one area.

Went to an air bnb in Nashville with exactly as you describe - it was amazing, made life so easy especially as downstairs was open plan! Wish I could do it here - closest I’ve got is a similar washing machine!!!!

Sludgecolours · 28/12/2017 19:57

I've thought about this (live in a very tall thin house with lots of stairs) but (a) like to dry things outside and (b) was worried about the noise (like to programme machines to come on v early or they finish late). The carrying of laundry up and downstairs is a total pain though so many re-think it!

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2017 20:00

My friend put in an upstairs laundry room when she built her house & she finds it really good. I was quite envious when I saw it until I remembered that I prefer to line dry outside when I can, so I'm glad my w/m is on the ground floor so I don't have to traipse downstairs with wet laundry.

moogmum · 28/12/2017 20:13

I have a laundry room upstairs and I absolutely love it. I do think the benefit of having a room to put laundry in is fantastic whether it is upstairs or downstairs but there is definitely less work involved with it upstairs and an inside line. Our garden isn’t big enough really to hang up washing so this isn’t a consideration for us. I can see that if it is, upstairs doesn’t really help.

Thedietstartsnow · 28/12/2017 20:17

Interesting indeed...we are about to have our bath ripped out and replaced with a wet room...now I'm wondering if my washing machine would fit in there...god my life would be transformed with a washing machine on the top floor

BradleyPooper · 28/12/2017 20:53

And you need a 12kg capacity American washing machine to go with it..... I have one and do 3 loads a week for a family of 4 including sheets and towels....

Knittedfairies · 28/12/2017 20:56

I've never thought of an upstairs laundry room, but now I want one.

BigGreenOlives · 28/12/2017 20:59

We have one & it makes it much easier to sort washing, I wouldn’t want it cluttering up the kitchen & we don’t have a utility room.

Originalfoogirl · 28/12/2017 21:06

I tend to put my laundry on overnight. It would be too noisy upstairs to do it.

user1499786242 · 28/12/2017 21:16

We recently moved house and have made the box room into my 'laundry room' washing machine, dryer, ironing board and I also have a pull out airer on the wall above a radiator to hang things that can't be tumble dried

IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE

No joke, I even bought a washing basket on wheels so I don't have to bend and carry heavy baskets of washing and I honestly feel like a new woman! No more washing hanging around in the kitchen, just goes straight into the room and I can shut the door on it! Game changer in my opinion

speakout · 28/12/2017 21:16

I line dry all year round ( in UK)

So thinks get carried up and down anyway.

Well strictly I throw them down. The bathroom opens up to the top landing, so I take everything and chuck it over the top rail. Everything land up on the bottom tow stairs.
People take their own clean laundry back upstairs.

And totally agree with leaks. Wouldn't want a washer upstairs for that reason.

NapQueen · 28/12/2017 21:21

We used to live in a maisonette and my dad rigged up a washing line which you could access from the first floor window. It was on a sort of pulley. So you would clip something on then pull one cord which would winch the item away and leave room for another one. It was attached to a pole at the far end of the garden below.

One of those plus an upstairs laundry room would be ideal.

Skowvegas · 28/12/2017 21:38

Hmm I'm now considering putting my washer and dryer in the dressing room. Right now they're in the basement so everything goes down two floors, then up one floor when it's clean (to be sorted and folded) then back up another floor to be put away.

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 28/12/2017 21:47

DH was in a house last week that had an upstairs laundry room. They solved the potential for a leaking washing machine by standing it on something like a shower tray. Inspired, we thought.
I would very much like one....it is tragic that my life has come to this!

BradleyPooper · 28/12/2017 23:09

Our washing machine in on a little sunken tiled area in case of leaks and is also above the garage so wouldn't damage furniture or floors if it leaked. I tend to put washing on at night, my laundry room ius next to dd's bedroom and the faint, vaguely white noise has her out like a light. The rest of us don't hear the machines with the door shut.

DMCWelshCakes · 28/12/2017 23:18

I'm just about to have one built & I can't wait. That's a good point about the leaks. I've never had a washing machine leak but it obviously would wait until it's upstairs. I'm going to investigate some form of waterproofing.
