To want a laundry room upstairs

Just that, I dream of having a laundry room upstairs so I don't traipse up and down the stairs with so much dirty/clean laundry.

One day I'm hoping it will happen when I build my own home.

Does anyone have an upstairs laundry room? Does it work well with the layout of house?

I’ve started nannying (temporarily unfortunately!!) for a family that has an upstairs laundry room that has a door that leads to an outside balcony with a washing line and space for a collapsible 3 tier on

My life has changed!! It’s potentially the greatest thing I’ve ever found in a house!!

Glad to hear it works for many. The only thing I would worry about is leaks but could try waterproofing in some way.

And the house with the balcony outside sounds ideal as u can dry outside too.

Wouldn’t it be ace to have an upstairs laundry with a large opening window which would let you get to one of those high level washing lines you hang things on and pulley round?

We also have a shower tray type thing
Got it from amazon
Also have an Absorption mat thing so you can't hear it throughout the house!

Absorption mat?

I live in Australia where most houses are bungalows. My laundry room is just down from the kitchen.

Still don't like it as it's spidery!

FlouncyDoves · 03/01/2018 08:37

It’s not that big a problem really, is it?

QueenBeet · 03/01/2018 08:42

Why not keep the laundry downstairs (solving the issues of noise and air-drying) and just have a laundry chute from the upstairs floor(s) ? I saw "Home Alone" over Christmas and it seemed like a really good idea !

mumpoints · 03/01/2018 08:43

We have one. Seriously, the ease of having clothes storage and washing all on the same floor is amazing. It seems such a little thing but it has a huge impact. The only time our clothes go up and down stairs is if we are wearing them!

I never even thought of leaks. We have several bathrooms upstairs also, they've never leaked.

thecatsthecats · 03/01/2018 08:43

I had one! It was bliss.

Our old rented place had an upstairs kitchen with a small 'study' off the end that we used as a wardrobe. Our bedroom was at the other end, off the landing.

Laundry was literally 15m work. 5m take clothes from bedroom and put wash on, 5m switch to tumble dryer, 5m sort and pop them back in the wardrobe folded up. I have never been so organised with the laundry in my life.

Now it's spread across upstairs, the kitchen and the shed! Oh well, at least it's exercise.

For many people, a laundry room would mean sacrificing a bedroom upstairs. However, there is a solution, get the rest of the family to help! Even a young child is quite capable of carrying dirty clothes downstairs, and clean ones back up.

It's only in England that it sounds like a strange concept. It makes so much more sense if you think about it, and people do have laundry rooms in flats, so there's no reason not to.

It's only in England that it sounds like a strange concept.

You think it's common practice in other parts of the UK?

Zatsuma · 03/01/2018 09:38

I wouldn't know Grin

speakout · 03/01/2018 09:41

But you feel you can speak for Northumberland or Cumbria?

Zatsuma · 03/01/2018 09:43

you don't know where I live, so I might be, how would you know!

Efferlunt · 03/01/2018 10:03

We air a and b’d in Amsterdam with and upstairs laundry room and balcony. Made total sense.

user1andonly · 03/01/2018 10:04

Yanbu! We don't own our house but, if we did, I would rip out the bath that we don't use and replace it with the washing machine, tumble dryer and a big area for sorting clothes. I had a friend who lived in a flat so all one level anyway but her washing machine was in the bathroom which seemed much more sensible than the kitchen. I've heard that in some countries they consider it really minging to have your dirty laundry in the kitchen and I would tend to agree!

Tbh, when I win the lottery and build my own house to my specifications, I will be tempted to have one huge room where all the laundry gets done and just hung up on rails for each member of the family, like a giant walk in wardrobe/laundry/ironing room rather than carting it all to and from individual rooms Grin
