NYE dullardery

What are you doing on NYE?
I would much rather sit at home with a takeaway and nice bottle of wine, a good DVD and DP (not necessarily in that order)!
Instead we're going to a friend of DPs for a dull evening hanging around their kitchen while they talk about holidays they all enjoyed with DP and his ex wife!! I'm dreading it and can already feel the headache coming on.

I hate NYE and would very happily spend it on my own, but DP's brother and wife have invited themselves, and then his son announced he might come over too. This is all before a house full on NY Day. All too much for me Sad

JaceLancs · 29/12/2017 00:30

Going with DP to a friends house n stopping over - we all take a bit of food n a lot to drink
Will watch tv - listen to music - play a board game or 2 and be quite chilled
Done this for over 5 years now and love it

peachgreen · 29/12/2017 00:49

I'm 9 months pregnant so I'll be staying in with DH, a Chinese takeaway, When Harry Met Sally (the ultimate NYE film) and a bottle of alcohol-free Prosecco! Can't wait.

ElizaDontlittle · 29/12/2017 01:32

I've never like NYE that much - I never was a night owl and now with ME/CFS I have to be really careful with activity/rest cycles. So I'm going to an early evening thing at church, because it's a Sunday, and home to bed with the cats.
As Monday is my last day off I will make the most of that instead.

VelvetSpoon · 29/12/2017 01:44

I hate NYEve. I've not had a half decent one in over 20 years, since I used to go to my friends village in Dorset where everyone used to join hands in the square at 12 and sing Auld Lang Syne.

We have an open invite to go to friends but it's a do in a sports hall, drinks are cheap but terrible, no one other than my 2 friends speaks to us all night and its 40 mins away so one of us has to drive! So we're giving that a miss.

Local friends are on holiday, or going to a local pub which is charging £15 a ticket. That's just to get in, no drinks! I resent paying to go to a pub. So I think we'll end up fucking it all off and staying in. It's been a horrible year so I think we'll be glad to see the end of it.

RavenLG · 29/12/2017 02:06

Another NYE hater here too. Travelling back to my hometown as we alternate Christmas / NY in my current city with DP and up north with my family/friends. NYE plans sounded delightful. Chilled night in with 4 of my friends, drinks, music, catch up... now it’s changed to a few drinks at friends house then the local shithole pub which I’ve spent too many crap NYE in. Pub is hosting a decent band, but is always rammed with chavs / old drunkards / underage teen idiots and a few ex’s/ people I would rather avoid. Truth be told I’d rather stay in with DP in our new house and have a lovely relaxed evening. Thinking of reasons to cancel but would hate to cancel seeing my folks. We were supposed to travel up today (28th) but I set it back a day to try and get out of it. I’m a terrible person x

Giggorata · 29/12/2017 03:21

We decided a long time ago that we prefer seeing the new year in at home, with some fizz and nibbles. The village pub changes character on big nights and we can't be arsed with it. We tend not to accept NYE invitations either. I frankly don't want to kiss all and sundry, with god knows which virus, and I'm not sure that I feel all that optimistic and jolly, either.
Grump Hmm

treaclesoda · 29/12/2017 03:27

I've always hated NYE. For about the past fifteen years we have spent it on the sofa having a drink and eating party food. Just because we can. Works for us.

TealStar · 29/12/2017 04:03

Can’t stand NY. We had quite a fun one last year at a friends’ big house but this year dh and I have avoided making any plans. I have eaten and drunk an extortionate amount due to a big birthday and lots of family visiting and can see NYE as being the first night in about two weeks where I can actually go to bed without having eaten or drunk too much that night. Longing to wake up on NYD without a vague hangover and a massive food baby!

TealStar · 29/12/2017 04:04

I live Christmas so much that I associate NYE with a post-Christmas comedown. Sad

Wincarnis · 29/12/2017 04:13

At home with DP and our new dog. New dog may or may not be terrified of fireworks, we don’t know, so will stay home to make sure she’s ok. Netflix/dvd, takeaway, fizz, sorted.

OberonTheHopeful · 29/12/2017 05:03

I used to enjoy NYE a lot, and always had some big party or event to go to. In recent years though I've lost all enthusiasm for it. A few years ago I went to a ticketed event and left early because I just wasn't enjoying it (went home and watched a film, and still consider I had a great night).

More recently I've been going to a friends house with a handful of others, very low key and it's been enjoyable. This year I'm house sitting for someone who's away and actually looking forward to a takeout and a film. And no singing!

MyGuideJools · 29/12/2017 05:16

Another hater here!
I'm working a 12 hour night shift which I don't mind at all. DD Is off to a pub which she often goes to but on NYE it's £15 Just to get in the door.Shock
Its all a big Rip off!!

coconuttella · 29/12/2017 06:17

But it’s billed as the biggest night of the year! It must be, as all the radio stations tell me again and again, and they know everything.... How can you possibly not love it if the DJs are so excited by it!

All the delicious excitement of waiting for hours to hear a clock chime midnight....oooo, it makes me tingle just thinking about those bongs! How I want to cheer and whoop when the first bong bongs! Yay!

What isn’t there to love about and the incessant cries of Happy New Year! Happy New Year! Happy New Year! Happy New Year! as you rush round kissing people you would barely shake hands with at any other time. Oooo, goose pimples at the wonder of it!

And to top it off you all cross arms and gleeful bounce up and down singing a Scottish song! Get that!... we actually sing some genuine Robert Burns ditty and get to be all Scotch! I think I might burst!

It’s so worth the mega hangover the next day!

WhiskeySourpuss · 29/12/2017 06:51

This is the reason I stay in my own house on NYD & the 2nd just to be on the safe side!

I last went out for NYE about 4 years ago. At 35 I felt positively ancient & couldn't conceal my disgust at the £20 I had to pay to get into a shitty club never mind the overinflated drink prices -£7.50 for a long vodka!

By 10 past midnight I remembered why I never go out at New Years... I was skint, sober although if I'd rung the beer out of my skirt I could've been scuttered, my feet were killing me & if I'd kissed anyone at the bells I'd likely have been put on the register Hmm

This year I am child free so don't even have to sit up until the bells... takeaway, wine, crap on telly & bed by 10pm!

dudsville · 29/12/2017 06:56

The worst thing about any special day is spending it with people who want to mark it in a different way. We'll be doing your wishes op, and throw in an added early night followed by a nice walk on NY day.

Want2bSupermum · 29/12/2017 07:09

I am a NYE hater and DH loves it. He has invited two of his friends over with their wives to do a lasagne cook off. I actually laughed when he told me he had invited them and it was a lasagne cook off. Apparently this isn't a joke and it's not April 1st.

I'm exhausted. December has been a really tough month as it always is. Doesn't help that we celebrated Hanukkah, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I want to be tucked up in bed with a hot chocolate and some nice chocolates to munch on while watching some Netflix.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 29/12/2017 07:28

Are they all bringing a lasagne to your house @Want2bSupermum or cooking there?

That does sound quite good fun actually! But I appreciate that it's not what you're up for.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 29/12/2017 07:38

Hate NYE. Best one I ever had was on my own with some wine nibbles and tv

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 29/12/2017 07:45

Great thread.
I havent always been a miserable arse about NYE, i did ised to loke goimg to party, club or pub. Enjoyed those ticket -only events and the celebratory midnight cheering and kissing everyone
I think what's happened as ive got older is this revelry simply doesnt appeal. I have children so im more busy and a quiet night in with dh, enjoyig a movie and a drink or even an early night is actually quite a treat. Its not something that i get to do every night as im usually too busy.
I think we'll try to do something soecial as a family for ny day

Izzabellasasperella · 29/12/2017 07:46

I'm going to a huge 1980's party with a band, djs and a silent disco!
I have a costume sorted, (80's goth) a friend is driving and I am sneaking in a hip flask of vodka to save on the queue at the barSmile

LakieLady · 29/12/2017 07:52

MIL is doing a meal for all the IL's, nieces, nephews etc. We're going, but we're taking the motorhome and parking it in her drive, so we can slope off to bed whenever we like, and we can both have a drink, too.

I'll probably be reading in bed by 10.30, same as any other night.

Want2bSupermum · 29/12/2017 12:57

accidentally They want to cook at our home apparently. I've made it clear no one is cooking on NYE. I have a couple of lasagne in the freezer which are perfectly fine for NYE. I have some pate I made for our Danish Christmas and will stretch myself to make toast.

Parker231 · 29/12/2017 13:20

We use to go out NYE but for the last few years have held a party at home. Lots of friends, neighbors and the DT’s with their friends. Cold buffet and plenty of drinks. New Years Day is a long lie in and then a tidy up and get ready to go back to work and start 2018.

MsHarry · 30/12/2017 17:21

We will be home and I will be sober as DD17 will need picking up from her first NYE party at 12.30 and I don't like the idea of her getting a cab. We might take DD13 out for something to eat earlier in the evening but then home . I'm not a big fan of NYE unless it's a family party.
