Clothes on the line?

Do you put your washing out on the line when it's winter and freezing cold but sunny? Me and DH have a constant battle over this. I'd prefer to bang it all in the dryer. But he pays the bills and wants it on the line. Today I've stuck bedding and towels on the line and smalls/baby items in the dryer (I hate that stiff feeling baby clothes get on the line)
None of my friends put clothes on the line in the cold so just wondering what everyone's opinions were?

I think the general rule is that if the floor is dry then your clothes will dry (as that means the air is dry as opposed to damp). But I prefer using our dryer as it's a pain pegging out washing.

Our dryer is really economical and we only ever use it on the lowest hear setting. I have it running for a few hours over the weekend and it hardly costs anything.

Tell DH to stop being so tight Grin

OddestSock · 28/12/2017 12:00

I put the washing on the line yesterday. They weren’t completely dry when I brought them in, but I put them on the clothes airer i side & they’re dry this morning (we don’t have a tumble drier)

KarmaStar · 28/12/2017 12:01

If there is some Sun and or a strong breeze I hang it out.if the air is damp it won't dry however windy it is.

Elsouth · 28/12/2017 12:01

What if the floor is dry but frosty Grin
It is a pain pegging it out especially as I have two little ones. He's our only income so I understand him not wanting to build bills up but if I pet it on the line and it's not dry by 5pm then it's going in the washer anyway so might as well just skip the whole line part

*dryer not washer

I find if it's dry and bright but cold, it won't get dry but will feel fresher than if I'd just fully dried it inside. Stops that fusty indoorsy smell. We find the dehumidifier really useful at this time of year too as the washing dries inside so much more quickly and without smelling.

SootyandMathew · 28/12/2017 12:16

Our GP always said that frosty weather kills bugs so I've always hung washing our when it's cold. Plus I prefer the smell from outside dried washing. Usually finish it off in the dryer though.

AuntLydia · 28/12/2017 12:17

I'm with you op - it just feels like extra work if I'm going to finish it off in the dryer anyway.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/12/2017 12:19

We have to dry ours inside as I don't like my clothes being tumble dried. If it's a nice bright day they go out, if not they are on the heated drier in the living room.

happymummy12345 · 28/12/2017 12:20

I never put washing out when it's winter, also we don't have a dryer as I hate them. I put washing on the airers and radiators to dry

MrsJayy · 28/12/2017 12:22

If my back paths are damp i dont put washing out If dry it is usually towels and jeans they come in damp but don't take as long in the tumble.

PinkHeart5914 · 28/12/2017 12:24

Yes it gets hang out sometimes, mainly if one of us can be bothered.

I find it doesn’t dry completely but will need less time in the dryer, therefore costing less but I do find bedding and towels especially smell ‘fresher’ if they’ve been outside

ATeardropExplodes · 28/12/2017 12:27

I do, I love the smell of line dried clothes. I don't even have a tumble drier. If the ground is dry then they go out. Smalls, I can't be bothered to stand there in the cold and peg out so they go straight on the heated airer. Big stuff [t-shirt and above], gets brought in at night and stuck on the heated airer and then they are usually dry by the morning.

grosseconnasse · 28/12/2017 12:36

What's the temperature outside? It's just below freezing here I think - I know from experience that clothes hung outside when it's freezing will not dry, and will just freeze solid!
I would put them in the drier or on the clothes horse (we also have a dehumidifier which speeds things up significantly).

specialsubject · 28/12/2017 12:38

Plenty of washing drying outside today, air temperature irrelevant.

Run that dryer, stuff the planet a bit more for your kid. And aren't you involved in family finances?

purplecorkheart · 28/12/2017 12:39

I put my own out in cold dry weather. I have a wind channel in my garden so things seem to dry quickly there anyway (awful for the plants!). I finish off in the dryer.

Ruffian · 28/12/2017 12:42

I've put washing out today while the sun's out. I know it won't dry as it's too cold and still but I just feel they're cleaner for being out in the air.

deadringer · 28/12/2017 12:43

I hang the washing out unless it's raining. I think it's better for the environment and I like the feel and smell of line dried clothes.
I wouldn't have my dh telling me what to do though, if he is insistent on line drying and you are busy with your lo then he can hang then out himself.

StrawBasket · 28/12/2017 12:47

Of course I do, even if it's around zero degrees. I use my dryer as little as possible, don't want any damp and mould in the house, so outside it is. If it laundry is not bone dry in the evening, I just leave it in the bathroom overnight and it's done in the morning. There's usually enough wind or breeze outside to do the job (South East here)

I will never have clothes on the radiators, and heated airers create too much condensation in the house.

xxJoJoxx · 28/12/2017 12:49

I wouldnt waste money on a tumble dryer. Stick it on a clothes horse over night and its all dry and ready to be folded. For those that dont like clothes horses and the Chinese Laundry look - you dont see it over night when you are asleep!

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 28/12/2017 12:51

We got 3 loads dry outside yesterday as it was sunny and windy; perfect conditions!

We have a dryer but prefer to get as much dry (or nearly dry) outside as possible all year.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 28/12/2017 12:51

I do but I have some sturdy sock airers for baby items so can easily go in and out when needed. Larger items go on hangers so can also go in easily if it starts raining. I don't have a drier though so dry a lot inside on the sock airers.

ATeardropExplodes · 28/12/2017 13:00

I have a load on right now, will be going out in about 30 mins.

StrawBasket · 28/12/2017 13:03

I agree, clothes horse are great for smaller items, you only put everything once and take them inside in the evening to finish drying overnight.

This country is so damp, my house doesn't need any extra.

speakout · 28/12/2017 13:05

Yes I put out washing when it's frosty.
The air can be dry, sunny even when there is snow on the ground.
Washing will smell fresher, be partially dry, bugs will be killed and UV light will brighten white clothes and get rid of stains.
