Clothes on the line?

Do you put your washing out on the line when it's winter and freezing cold but sunny? Me and DH have a constant battle over this. I'd prefer to bang it all in the dryer. But he pays the bills and wants it on the line. Today I've stuck bedding and towels on the line and smalls/baby items in the dryer (I hate that stiff feeling baby clothes get on the line)
None of my friends put clothes on the line in the cold so just wondering what everyone's opinions were?

Always line dry where possible here. Feels fresher to me, properly aired, and saves a fortune.

SolemnlyFarts · 28/12/2017 13:31

I don't see why your husband should get to call the shots because he pays the bills, though - who actually dries the laundry? If it's you, I think you should decide - if he want it done his way, he'd have to do it himself, surely?

Airer inside or line outside here. We don’t have a dryer as I don’t like them but don’t miss having one.

StrawBasket · 28/12/2017 13:50

n that case he gets to peg the washing out as well. might be difficult if the poor guy is at work though Grin

Parker231 · 28/12/2017 13:55

Dryer user here - I like soft fluffy towels and bedding and like the speed of moving everything straight from the washer to the dryer.

Outside.

champagneplanet · 28/12/2017 14:02

Tumble dryer in the winter, clothes airer on the landing for stuff that can't be tumble dried (heat rises so it dries quickly).

If DH wants to peg it out give him the washing and the pegs Grin

DeathMetalMum · 28/12/2017 14:06

I line dry all year round. We do use a dryer at times and for socks and pants but I don't like all the clothes going in the dryer as it does shorten their use.

I don't like towel done in the dryer, for some reason they just don't feel as clean/fresh as when they are dried on the line.

TheDoorMat · 28/12/2017 14:11

Hot Water
Heating
Food in the cupboard
Tumble Dryer
These are my luxuries and what I work for.
I couldn't give two hoots what I wear or what's parked on the drive.

I know friends who hang out their clothes, House absolutely freezing, sod all food... To save a few quid, Then go out dressed to the nines with silly car on private plates and portray themselves as a cut above. each to their own.

We do the washing/drying 2/3 times a week. both washer dryer are used in economy mode and TBH I think its money well spent.

MrsJayy · 28/12/2017 14:17

God I just noticed he said he pays the bills so he gets to decide Balls to that is he tight and controlling about otherthings he pays for

nornironlady · 28/12/2017 14:23

xxJoJoxx - I have to agree, I never had one growing up and there were triple the amount of people in a 3 bed terrace than in my 3 bed semi. I don't see the point now. Never been that low on clothes that this has been an issue. Such a first world problem if you can afford or have space for a dryer, many just can't.

trinity0097 · 28/12/2017 14:34

Inside on an airer for me, one that is in our spare room next to a radiator.
Bedding and towels get tumbled though. Towels because they go crunch line dried (so I tumble all year round), bedding goes on the line when the weather is nice and I will be at home for a day and can be there to bring it in if it rains!

FuzzyCustard · 28/12/2017 14:37

Outside all year as I have no tumble dryer. As long as you watch the weather forecast it is fine, and I love the smell of air dried clothes. Also saving the planet! (A bit)

CremeFresh · 28/12/2017 14:45

Line dry as often as possible , I don't have a tumble dyer any more because there just seemed to be so few things that could go in there that would dry quicker than if pegged on the line or airer. Towels and jeans took forever and it seemed an extravagance to have it just for socks and pants. I love the smell of clothes dried outside and whites come in much whiter !

minisoksmakehardwork · 28/12/2017 15:08

Ive got 3 loads out on the line today. I prefer to line dry as tumbling can be expensive (I stood listening to the meter clicking round when drying one night.

I love the fresh smell of line dried laundry but it can be a ball ache putting out wet washing on a cold morning. My fingers end up frozen.

Anyway, line dry for preference, clothes horse if still damp and finish of in dryer if necessary. If it's raining clothes go straight on the horse and finish in the dryer next morning if still wet.

We're also on economy 7 due to storage heaters and I'm not a fan of leaving the dryer completely unattended.

BackBoiler · 28/12/2017 15:12

It all goes in the dryer at the moment. If it dries outside however it gets hung out on the line. Hate clothes hanging all over the place.

BuzzKillington · 28/12/2017 15:19

'He pays the bills'? Bollocks to that. Does he peg out all the washing then?

We dry everything in the dryer all year round.

There was a massive washing line in the garden when we moved in but we removed it and the posts.

I have never pegged out washing in my life.

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 28/12/2017 15:24

We don't have a tumble dryer. The only thing that goes on the line at the moment is our bedding which is out now. Everything else gets put on the airers. When it gets a bit warmer it will all go out.

StrawBasket · 28/12/2017 16:03

I would more happily use a dryer if it was dealing with a load of laundry in 15 minutes, but they take hours! Hanging clothes on the line even in the winter works just as well, and you can hand 2 or 3 loads at once - whilst they wouldn't fit in most dryer. These things are a complete waste of time if you ask me.

happypoobum · 28/12/2017 16:06

I don't put my washing out in the winter as it simply does not dry so it's a useless faff.

I agree with PP who say if DH wants the washing line dried then he can peg it out and bring it in.

WindyWednesday · 28/12/2017 16:11

Yes, washing out all year round. But wash first thing so they get a few hours outside. In by 2pm at this time of year and finish on the airer or dryer. Yesterday it was clear blue sky and windy. Everything dried well. Especially jeans, they need to go on the line.

FrivolouslyFancifulFannie · 28/12/2017 16:18

im on a tight budget, min wage job so have key meters, its shocking how quick the electric runs down with the drier on. I prefer to save the money on the electric so i can put it on the gas and kill 2 birds with one stone, heat the house and dry the clothes on the radiator and clothes horse, never bother with the line in the winter as they always still come in damp anyway

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2017 16:28

Like WindyWednesday. I had things dry on the line last week but today they are just a lot less damp.
