To tell you to throw lillies away (if you have a cat)

Please please please - if you have a cat don't have them in the house.

My daughters cat is in the vets where I work after a panicked visit to the emergency vet at 5.30 this morning. £250 Bill for basic first aid and instruction which thank the lord in heaven we were able to take over care (I'm a student vet nurse). Estimated bill in excess of £1000 if I wasn't able to help.

All because she ate a single lilly petal that had dried out and fell on the floor. Dr was aware of dangers but a friend bought them for her and she didn't realise just HOW dangerous they are.

The cat is ok FOR NOW but symtomsare delayed acute kidney failure. Often fatal. I may have to tell my dd that her cat is going to die. It will break her (she suffers depression).

Please get rid of the fucking things

I really hope cat is ok and YANBU as they are poisonous. The message about lilies is slowly getting around-eg. our vets have posters up but I wish there were clear warnings on bunches of lilies or bouquets containing them.
A former colleague's kitten ingested some lily pollen but luckily had no lasting damage.

Wolfiefan · 26/12/2017 20:21

Oh crap. I wouldn't have them anywhere near a cat. I thought it was the pollen that was toxic. Poor cat. Hoping for good news soon.

SisterMoonshine · 26/12/2017 20:30

That includes those amaryllis that are often given at Christmas

Fauxtatoes · 26/12/2017 20:31

Poinsettia is also poison to cats. We Google everything floral before we buy it.

Beansprout30 · 26/12/2017 20:31

I had no idea about this til my MIL told me, I used to have lillies in the house a lot and now I wonder if they had made my old cat poorly and had to be PTS

clairethewitch70 · 26/12/2017 20:32

We had a scare a month or so back. Our cat became ill, and we had lilies in the house. I rushed him to the vet and he had an infection, not caused by the lilies but it was enough to scare me into never having them in the house again.

swapsicles · 26/12/2017 20:36

Is there a good reliable source to tell you which plants/flowers are safe for cats?
I have a car who eats any foliage he can get his paws on including the fake Christmas tree!
Obviously any I have had have been whisked away and put up high but it would be nice to have a plant it or two about the place. Hope your cd's kitty recovers well x

Vinorosso74 · 26/12/2017 20:40

The icatcare website lists all plants to avoid with cats.

Justkeepswimminglalala · 26/12/2017 20:43

A few months ago, I had a scare with my furry friend. He had been really listless and vomited several times. Vet thought it was probably viral (she was right) but because we had been gifted Lily's and were unaware they were poisonous at the time until I saw it on our vets website when looking for their number, I totally freaked. The vet agreed it was safer to be cautious so treated him with iv fluids etc just in case. Ended up with a big bill for a viral infection, but wow, Lily's are no longer allowed in this house!

Indigo911 · 26/12/2017 20:44

My mum’s cat died from kidney failure after eating some lillies

Microkitty · 26/12/2017 20:45

Oldraver · 26/12/2017 20:50

Poisonous to cats Hope this helps

Imsosorryalan75 · 26/12/2017 21:20

Yes, our cat ate some petals and pollen from them when I went out for 10 minutes. 3 days at the vets on drips and medication and £1500 later, we vowed never to have them in the house again.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2017 07:33

Cat was doing ok at 10 .30 last night . I'll find out today if there is likely to be kidney damage. Please pray for her Sad

Rudgie47 · 27/12/2017 07:38

I hope your daughters cat will pull through O.K. I'll look back at this later today.X

SporadicSpartacus · 27/12/2017 07:45

I hope cat is okay. Thanks for posting - I knew about regular lilies but wasn’t aware that peace lilies also affect cats badly.

dotdotdotmustdash · 27/12/2017 07:50

About 12 years ago our 14yr old cat became very unwell after standing in some lily pollen and licking his paws afterwards. I didn't know until he was ill at the vets and found the info on the internet. The vet had no idea that lilies were poisonous until I took in the printed info.

He spent a week in the vets and came home, apparently ok. Unfortunately 3 weeks later he suffered a sudden embolism and was put to sleep. I'm sure the embolism was a result of the damage caused by the lily poisoning.

clairethewitch70 · 27/12/2017 20:16

@LEMtheoriginal

How is DD's cat today?

Quiettiger · 27/12/2017 20:19

OP - I really hope your DD's cat makes it.

I second the whole don't have any lilies near cats - we lost a DCat in 2013 to lily poisoning after he went a laid in the neighbours lily patch. It was horrible and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

blueberrypi27 · 27/12/2017 20:21

I really hope your cat is ok OP

BlurryFace · 27/12/2017 20:23

So sorry about your DD's cat, OP, I hope she's on the mend. Cats can get into such scrapes, they're worse than toddlers!

TacoFlavouredKisses · 27/12/2017 20:23

Yup, had my cat at the vet's overnight when she was a kitten and turned up in front of me with a lily petal in her mouth before vomiting shortly after.

I have a friend who always brings me lillies and have to give them to my neighbour Blush

Hope your DD's cat is on the up now!

OrangeFluff · 27/12/2017 20:26

I always cut the stamens off lilies and give the petals a good wipe over if I'm given them- I have always been told it is the pollen that is dangerous.

I hope your lovely cat is OK.

Newname12 · 27/12/2017 20:29

Those lists you find on the internet aren’t much use. “Poisonous” is not differentiated- poinsettia, for example is commonly listed. It will likely make your cat vomit and give him a nasty stomach ache, but it won’t cause death and rarely even needs treatment. Unlike lillies- and no, peace lily’s don’t cause kidney failure, they aren’t lethal.

There is now an animal poison line you can ring if you’re worried. I think it’s £25 for a phone consult. Cheaper than a trip to the vet! www.animalpoisonline.co.uk/
