To think your DC don’t want to be dragged around shops on Boxing Day

AaronPurrSir · 26/12/2017 16:12

Fully prepared to be flamed for this, but having no DC myself I need to know what goes through some parents heads.

I never normally shop on Boxing Day as I don’t agree with it in principle, but I was forced to spend an hour in a town centre earlier today and I couldn’t believe the amount of parents dragging their DC around.

I saw several children who were clearly completely and utterly fed up, crying, tantrumming (and these were children too old for the tantrum stage - think 6-10yo).

They have had a week of over excitement from Christmas, too much sugar, probably more gifts thrown at them than they can handle and are then dragged around a hellishly busy town centre for hours on end because their DM/DF can’t possibly cope without getting 10% off some tat in sports direct. I don’t understand it at all. When I was small, Boxing Day was for eating leftovers, watching films and relaxing. The most we would do would be a walk to get some fresh air, or visit family members we hadn’t seen the day before.

If you want to inflict the horror that is Boxing Day sales on yourself, go for it. But don’t inflict them on your overtired, overstimulated DC.

I couldn't agree more. If some people want to go shopping why don't they leave the poor kids with another relative, instead of making it some kind of awful family event.

Splinterz · 26/12/2017 16:15

Are you volunteering to do the babysitting to facilitate adults only shopping?

speakout · 26/12/2017 16:16

???

MammaAgata · 26/12/2017 16:18

Couldn’t agree with you more. But then again I don’t understand the concept of sales shopping on Boxing Day for anyone. There are so many ‘sales’ throughout the whole year that none of them seem at all genuine. And as for Next just dragging out shite from years ago that they never managed to shift in the first place.. shudder.. why anyone would want to inflict that on themself is anybody’s guess!

Thebookswereherfriends · 26/12/2017 16:18

I'd like to know how they even got them out the house! I tried to get my 5yr old out for a short walk into the village and you'd think I had suggested a little light torture!

Rossigigi · 26/12/2017 16:19

I was forced to go to town today- by my child to pick up a Nintendo switch which he wanted to buy with some of his Christmas money..... I could well have been one of those tantruming children you seen that was to old to tantrum.....

Lol no.

I have a family member from another city visiting who really wanted to go shopping. I felt it would be rude to not accompany them when they are my guest and don’t know the town well. Not sure why that’s relevant at all to my point?

My DS hates going round the shops regardless of it being Boxing Day or any random day in the year.

Brandnewstart · 26/12/2017 16:21

Mine were desperate to go round the shops (9 and 13). I made them go on a really wet and windy walk round a bay instead. They are currently discussing how nice it is to be back in a warm dry house very loudly Xmas Grin

youarenotkiddingme · 26/12/2017 16:21

My friend DD has her birthday today.

She's being dragged around the shops because her DD asked for money and shopping trip to buy clothes and a specific gadget for Xmas.

My friend was dreading it Grin

topcat2014 · 26/12/2017 16:22

I am 46 and agree with a PP, I hate shopping any time of the year. Fortunately DW is of similar mind, so we never need to inflict it on DC

TheWitchAndTrevor · 26/12/2017 16:23

I agree with you, but then I don't get the whole shopping on boxing day either.

DC and us just want to chill or visit family of we have to, but mostly chill, eat left overs and go through all our new stuff.

Brokenbiscuit · 26/12/2017 16:25

I don't shop on boxing day because I object to the shops being open - I'd like the retail sector staff to get a proper break.

However, if I did go shopping on Boxing Day, I'd take my dc and she would be happy to go along with it. 6-10 is way too old to have tantrums, whether they want to be in town or not.

MrsJayy · 26/12/2017 16:30

I would rather poke my eyes out than go to shops today the next sale started at 6 am fgs I don't understand it at all.

zeeboo · 26/12/2017 16:32

My seven year old dd and I went shopping today. She wanted to both push her new doll in his new pushchair and spend the gift vouchers from her Godmother.
There were no tantrums, whining and tears from either of us, although I'd rather have been in front of the telly with the Cadbury's Heroes

Iloveanimals · 26/12/2017 16:33

Mine wanted to go shopping. Don't judge all kids that are out.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/12/2017 16:37

You have a point tbh.

It's madness. They are over ecvited and over tired and have probably been "performing" for friends and family for days.

Shops are crowded and too hot this time of year it's bloody hard as an adult let alone children.

SheepyFun · 26/12/2017 16:42

DD came with me to Tesco, as we needed food (had been travelling 22-24, so last bought food on 21). DH was unwell (not self inflicted), so I needed to take her with me.

Tomorrow we'll go and pick up a couple of bits that she needs to use her presents (from others) - a glue gun and some other crafty things. As the weather forecast tomorrow is grim, it'll give her a small amount of exercise, which she definitely needs. I'm hoping to avoid tantrums, but can never be sure. So there are all kinds of reasons why people will be shopping.

BarbiesPinkShoes23 · 26/12/2017 16:42

Slightly off topic, but, if you are going shopping today please be nice to the staff who are not able to shop and relax. I've had so many rude customers today and it doesn't feel Christmassy at all. Thanks Xmas Grin.

Bluelonerose · 26/12/2017 16:43

I can't believe people get dressed boxing day! I'm staying in my pjs till kids go back to school Grin

RunningOutOfCharge · 26/12/2017 16:43

Just because that's howyou liketo spend Boxing Day, don't assume it's how others should spend it!!!

S YABU

RunningOutOfCharge · 26/12/2017 16:45

well that's nice blue* but some of us have to wirk. You really 'can't believe' that we did not all sit around in pyjamas all day?

That's my idea of hell

DisaronnoAndCoke · 26/12/2017 16:45

Yanbu, no way on this planet would my DC's want to go shopping on Boxing Day!

Glumglowworm · 26/12/2017 16:46

I would be having a tantrum if I got dragged to the Next sale this morning and I’m 32!

I hate shopping at the best of times though

Offyougo · 26/12/2017 16:48

I like boxing day shopping and kids learn you can't always do what they like when they like, sometimes adults wants and needs are considered! Having children doesnt turn you in their slaves! Couldnt pro ise about no tantrums tho Grin
