Trying to deal with a dog poo problem.

Background- we live in a village but it has recently been extended to have a brand new estate of 120 houses. It’s a nice estate but recently one of the streets have moved in (9 houses) we know because they live the next street up and have been empty until the 15th December when all 9 were moved into.

Since then there has been a distinctive Dog poo on a round every single day. It’s huge and bright orange. So obviously the same Dog. Who ever owns the dog obviously has no intent in picking up the poo off the pavement because there are now 8 poos in a range of locations along the lane including two directly outside our house.

On Christmas Day my eldest got a new bike for Christmas and managed to roll in one (not difficult when there are so many)

Although we have a dog and therefore poo bags I’m loathed to pick up someone else’s poo and leave it in my bin to smell.

Would it be unreasonable to complain to their HA or to the developers? Is there anything they can even do ? I’m not sure which house it is but we’ve been here two years since they started building and never ever had this issue. It’s also a dead end so not likely to be anyone walking by.

If we catch them should we say anything- or is that likely to spark off problems.
It’s really grim though and likely to get worse if there have been 8 since the 15th.

Arg we had a new poo this morning. I’ve sent an email to the local council but as I don’t know who is doing it I’m note sure that they can do anything.

I think I’m becoming the crazy poo lady!

9 houses. I would just go and knock on doors and politely explain there's been a lot of dog poo left the last couple of weeks and please could all residents pick up after their dogs.

Enwi · 27/12/2017 12:10

Completely understand your frustration. We wake up to find a dog poo outside our drive every single WEEKDAY morning. I wake up at 7am and it's always already there, but never there at night no matter how late I come in. I'm a childminder and so can't just leave it there, so I have to go out every morning and pick up a stone cold poo. We have our own dog, so I'm mortified that someone will think I'm allowing my own dog to poo just outside of our driveway every morning. It's particularly frustrating as we don't put our own dogs poo in our bins as they are kept in direct sunlight (the only space in the garden they can go), so we always walk our dog first thing in the morning and use one of the bins provided AWAY from our own home.
Not much advice other than trying to catch them at it, but this has been going on 9-10 months for us and we're no closer to a culprit!

The people a few streets away from me had a problem like this (probably not all due to the same dog) and would rush out and glare at me when my (female) dog squatted for a wee, thinking she was the poo perpetrator (we always pick up if she does anything). Someone living next to them had it outside their garage door every day too. Eventually they put up cameras and warning angry notices telling you about them. The poo problem stopped. It does seem as though the worst offending owners walk their dogs at about 5.00 am though. I long to catch them and hand them a poo bag and make them pick it up. I also have trouble with people who let their dog poo in the forest next to me - there are plenty of notices detailing the bye-laws of the forest, including that if your animal poos on forest land you must pick up the poo and take it away. However, the paths near the entrances are covered in poo and you really have to watch your step and we have art installations of deteriorating used poo bags festooning the trees and bushes AAARGH!

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 27/12/2017 12:26

We have this since the summer along a footpath used by loads of kids and parents to get to school.

Just a continuous row of gigantic turds.

Everyone is on heightened alert to cop the offender.

Sparklesocks · 27/12/2017 12:33

Ugh I feel for you OP, it’s such a gross anti social thing to deal with - and so easy to avoid if the owner looks after their dog properly!

We have a similar issue, we live on a private street which is sort of a side road off a main one. At the entrance to our road there’s an electric meter box which belongs to an office on the corner there, and every few days or so someone leaves their (full) dog poo bag on top of the box. It’s so gross. Sometimes there are 4 or 5 bags at a time. Someone must clear them up eventually, but I hate coming home from work and having to walk past all the bags to get to my house. Why bother bagging it up if you aren’t going to take it with you? These people are gross!

Lucisky · 27/12/2017 13:08

We have had this problem too. It is obviously the same dog, judging by the turds, and also a big dog! I know it is someone who walks early, probably in the dark (perhaps he, and it is usually a he, thinks that if he can't see it it doesn't exist).
Can you do a bit of detective work op? 9 houses. Which one/s have got a dog? Surely they can't all have one? I would also get in touch with your dog warden.
It is just disgusting behaviour.

IrkThePurist · 27/12/2017 13:10

Contact your local council. Its not up to you to confront people, they can work out who it is and fine them.

Floralnomad · 27/12/2017 13:11

I’d stick a camera up at the front of your house ,eventually you will catch the offender and can then give the evidence to the council .

annielouise · 27/12/2017 13:13

My old neighbour would walk ahead of his dogs on purpose so he could pretend he never saw when his dogs did a poo. You should be looking out for this as a dog owner. I told him to go and pick it up or I'd report it. It's disgusting. He never had bags on him but would come out with an old coal shovel to pick it up in our street. What about the other streets though I'd tell him.

Shadowboy · 27/12/2017 13:13

Wow looks like this is a problem for a number of people! I’ve never had this problem before- I’m scared unless I catch them at it, then they will think I’m picking on them and start to retaliate in some way.

Short of sitting, watching and waiting would a camera work?

OP posts:
greeeen · 27/12/2017 13:27

I think I would also try the camera idea.

I had this, but I knew who it was. Huge dog- massive turds.
I saw him a few times looking away at the critical moment when dog did it, so I opened my door and called out as he made off 'scuse me, your dog just did a poo' first time he looked at me and shrugged and said I haven't got any bags. I handed him one, he looked right naffed off, but cleared it. Second time I called out 'have you forgotten your bags again? You really ought to take them whenever you take dog out...' handed him another. Third time he looked over at my door expectantly as he made off. True to form, I called out 'a few people have been not clearing up after their dogs. Don't suppose they know they can be fined if reported to the council eh. Not fair on everyone else is it?' He pulled out his own bags and cleared it up.
I know when he walks his dog out there, he knows I'm lurking. He now cleans up after it goes. Victory 😂

I cover rogue dog shit in flour - makes it more visible so we are less likely to stand on it, and signals to the dog owner that their crime has been noticed (I also hope the dog owner might think that the flour is a harmful substance and stay away, though I appreciate that this will just shift the problem up the road)

BirdInTheRoom · 27/12/2017 14:08

This is so disgusting. It seems to be a problem that has escalated around here more recently - maybe because people think they can get away with if nobody sees. I’ve seen a few spray painted bright pink & yellow which helps prevent people stepping in them. I think the paint is water soluble so goes away eventually.

VeganIan · 27/12/2017 14:14

Our council has a "report this dog turd" page - I've no idea what happens after you report it but I went through a period of using it daily due to the amount of crap outside the kids school. Something happened as we were then treated to a few months of the art installation "turd bag holly bush" outside the flats just down the road from the school. But not on the pavement - so something was said/done.

austenozzy · 27/12/2017 14:25

Bit lazy, lucisky - the two poo ignorers I’ve spotted in our village were both old ladies who pretended to not notice the turds being left by their aggressive rat-on-a-rope terriers. There are others who could well be males, granted. There are two dog shit alleys here where you need to be on guard at all times, esp with young kids. So annoying.

We ran a spray painting scheme locally that worked relatively well - spraying poo with yellow paint to make it stand out, along with accompanying ranting on local Facebook groups.

ConciseandNice · 27/12/2017 14:37

We moved from a big city (and a neigbourhood full of dogs) to a small town a year ago and I couldn't believe it. The town is full of poo. Everywhere. It's like no-one cares less. It's disgusting. Even near playparks. It has made me lose faith in people. I thought cities were supposed to be bad. People here suck and are morons.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 27/12/2017 14:45

Contact the parish council, they are likely to employ a dog warden anyway. They LOVE to get irate over dog shit.

FairfaxAikman · 27/12/2017 14:52

If the poo is orange then that dog has a shit diet.
I tend to be passive aggressive about these things and would try and catch the culprit as say "oooooh is hour dog unwell his pop looks AWFUL" or "have you run out of bags? Here have one of mine".

I have three dogs, each capable of producing something the size of their own heads (large medium breeds). If I can manage to carry enough bags, and use them, then everyone can.

yawning801 · 27/12/2017 14:53

I would just buy a few "Smile! You're on CCTV! Smile" signs and dot them about at various intervals around Shit Street. That should be enough to scare the poopetrator away.
