To ask how long you’ve known your longest/oldest friend?

I’m away with friends who we go away with every Christmas and summer, and they’re friends I’ve had since I was literally a baby. We’ve never thought twice about it but it turns out all our DPs/DHs/DWs think it’s impressive/bizarre!

So I’m now just curious - how long have you known your longest running friend?

52 years.

WhiskeySourpuss · 25/12/2017 12:59

Oldest & closest friend since nursery so 36 years... we've managed to get through 3 weddings, 2 divorces, 7 births & various stints of living hundreds of miles apart...but would always drop everything if the other needed us.

The kids all think it's weird that we knew each other at school... her OH was also at high school with us so he gets it as he's never known her without me & accepts that we're kind of a package deal 😂

MaidenMotherCrone · 25/12/2017 12:59

49 years but she's my sister.

Firenight · 25/12/2017 13:05

Since we were 3. We went all through schools together until 18. Now live down the road from each other (a fair way from where we grew up) and our kids go to school together.

mateysmum · 25/12/2017 13:05

40 years

TooManyPaws · 25/12/2017 13:07

46 years, since I was 10 and she was 11. She now lives in the USA but we connect most days thanks to Facebook and Messenger.

FuckwitsEverwhere · 25/12/2017 13:08

Since we were 4, 35 years now. She's ace.

UrgentScurryfunge · 25/12/2017 13:12

I'm in touch with secondary friends but very rarely actively see them, so university friends from 18 years ago for friends I still see with a reasonable frequency.

I'm casually in touch with a few from primary but only on a comment on FB level rather than a genuine friendship.

LemonShark · 25/12/2017 13:12

My oldest friendships are only seventeen years long (I'm 29), not got any from primary school or nursery. I often find that the friends I have who have mates since they were babies often have fairly tenuous bonds that are more to do with the length of the friendship than the quality, kinda a 'we're friends cos we've always been' even once the friendship doesn't work for them anymore and goes stale. As opposed to being friends with someone you chose as a developed person with your own interests.

It is cool though for those who have friendships since young childhood that they would still choose to invest in today even without the history. Such luck!

BulletFox · 25/12/2017 13:23

Kind of since birth? We were born in the same tiny ward at the same time, only became friends later though.

Unless we waved chubby baby fists at each other from our respective mother's beds

Chienrouge · 25/12/2017 13:26

32 years. We’re 33 Grin. Lived on the same street when we were born, parents went to toddler groups etc together. Between us we’ve lived in 5 countries and about 15 counties but still best friends. Her DD1 was born 3 weeks before my DD2 and they’re best friends. We all spent yesterday together.

SilverySurfer · 25/12/2017 14:43

54 years.

NC4now · 25/12/2017 14:45

Since birth. Our parents were best friends and she was born a few months before me. We’ve just hit 41 years friends.

loopsdefruit · 25/12/2017 15:30

24 years (I'm 26, she's like 6 months older) we live in different countries now but we're super close still :)

magpiemay · 25/12/2017 15:34

My best friend came to visit the day I was born... she was almost 1, our dads went to school together. So best friends my whole life. Impressively she really is my best friend in the world! We've drifted back and forth over the years through school etc but always come back together!

AdaColeman · 25/12/2017 15:36

We've been friends for 56 years. We live at opposite ends of the country now, but keep the friendship going with letters and phone calls.

mrsharrison · 25/12/2017 15:52

49 years. We met age 5 first day at school. I trust her with my life.

ProfYaffle · 25/12/2017 15:54

30 years, we met when we were 16.

Dd1's best friend (both aged 13) is someone whose Mum I met at antenatal classes so they've known each other since before birth! Hope they stay friends for a long time to come.

Glumglowworm · 25/12/2017 15:56

I have a couple of FB friends that I’ve known since I was 4, but as I moved away I don’t actually see them anymore or talk apart from on fb

My best friend I’ve known for 7 years, our manager at work at the time sat me next to her and we bonded over talking about dogs. We’ve supported each other through thick and thin, I’ve got to know her parents quite well too and even went on holiday with friend and her parents a few years ago.

My mum is 63 and still good friends with her best friend from grammar school age 11. They’ve been friends through marriages, children, divorces, new partners, ill health, death of parents, everything.

TossDaily · 25/12/2017 15:57

JaceLancs · 25/12/2017 16:21

One friend I was at primary school with so 46 years, another from high school and another from age 18
I’m still good friends with most of the nursery and playground mums I met when DC were that age - so that’s 24+ years ago

GinisLife · 25/12/2017 19:00

57 years - all my life. She's 18 months older than me and we grew up 5 doors apart. We have another friend who started senior school with my friend and were also friends. The 3 of us always meet up on Xmas eve to catch up on the past year

My dad was friends with his bf all his life as well and they also grew up 5 doors apart until his friend died about 7 years ago aged 80

winterinmadeira · 25/12/2017 19:04
