Does anyone else do this? I've nipped in to supermarkets last minute on Christmas Eve each year & never see empty shelves. AIBU to leave shopping until tomorrow?

Yanbu
Just don't be disappointed if they don't have everything you want.

I couldn't get sprouts on Christmas eve one time.

Generally I find it tends to be fairly quiet so I think it'll be ok

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 23/12/2017 09:22

Yanbu !

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 09:24

I'd probably cope if I couldn't get sprouts! Xmas Envy Xmas Grin
Last year our lovely local (small) supermarket had shelves of beautiful veg stacked up on Christmas Eve. I'm planning to go there. Seems like everyone heads for the massive supermarkets!

I don't know should I go now or leave until first thing tomorrow either !

FlaviaAlbia · 23/12/2017 09:27

We normally do just before they shut as they're pretty empty, but I think Sunday opening hours will scupper that technique this year.

WoodenRainbow · 23/12/2017 09:29

Yes we’ve done it before and there was loads in stock still and not very busy.

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 09:30

Littlelamb I'm still in bed ... I might go a bit later & see what it's like out there Grin

YANBU, planning same, but then not particularly bothered about having everything perfect. I figure the organised pre planning types will not be buying so much food in trays, they will want to nKe stuff from scratch ;) hopefully we can get some reduced pre prepared stuff

PurpleDaisies · 23/12/2017 09:31

We usually do this. Occasionally there’s no pate or whatever but have always got all the main bits.

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 09:32

Flavia That was my plan - tomorrow lunchtime. I don't care if I get the last turkey chicken!! It'll be fine won't it?!

I've done this several times, I had to change a couple of ideas I had though (I was after lamb rump steaks for dinner Christmas Eve and they had none so got pork steaks instead). As long as you're prepared in your head for substitutes it's fine.
(and once I ended up with frozen parsnips but hey, who cares).

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 09:39

I need to buy:
Chicken or Turkey
Sausages
Bacon
Veg
Pudding of some description
Cheese
Ham
Bread

We have stuffing, pickles etc. and chocolates.

There will be 6 of us.

I need to get a few last minute perishables that wouldn’t fit in my freezer like yorkshire puddings, soinach, herbs, ricotta, crusty bread, fresh pasta, fish —and ice cream— and i’m working today so it has to be tomorrow i buy it.

Walkerbean16 · 23/12/2017 09:39

Im having to do this as my mum told me last night my dad is too poorly to have dinner at theirs like we usually do so i am hosting 14 people at mine! Thanks mum!

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 09:45

Walker You know, I bet everyone will love it! Sometimes when things are thrown together it is much nicer! I hope your Dad can join in too.

Years of careful planning, rushing around, stress... no more!
DH has just come up (I'm still lying around upstairs) and is walking into town for the veg. Smile
Even less to do now!!!

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/12/2017 11:14

I have nearly always done this as working and minimal fridge space so want perishables as late as possible.

Yukbuck · 23/12/2017 11:19

I went last night between 9:30-10:30 (ish) and it was lovely and quiet. In fact, it was quieter than when I normally do my weekly shop! There were still plenty of people in there but you could easily walk down the aisle without bumping in to anyone. The only thing we couldn't get was potato salad.
Tesco we went. Big bag of potatoes, carrots, sprouts, parsnips all 29 p a bag! So cheap.

Namechangetempissue · 23/12/2017 11:19

It's a tough one! Some years there seems to be plenty on the shelves, other years there is nothing.
When I worked in HR for a big supermarket, we would strip the store on Christmas Eve -decs down, some products removed etc. We wouldn't necessarily restock "Christmas" themed goods. I think its luck of the draw depending on which shop you choose and what the general population have done. Apparently it was massively busy yesterday.

WitchesHatRim · 23/12/2017 11:20

Tomorrow won't be like a normal Christmas Eve as it's the strict Sunday trading laws.

When I used to work in retail Christmas Eves on Sundays used to be rammed.

ImAMarshmellow · 23/12/2017 11:27

Mum did this every year. I think she bought the turkey a few days before, it everything else was xmas eve at whatever time the supermarket opened. She would then lay in wait for the tills to turn on and straight through.

Don't think she ever didn't get what she needed.

Go for it. The world won't end because you couldn't get sprouts.

yorkshapudding · 23/12/2017 12:22

Go for it.

I thought I was being organised this year and did my Christmas shop online well in advance so I wouldn't have to brave the crowds. The delivery is due this evening and I've just had an email telling me there's 14 substitutions (at least half of which have no resemblance to what I actually ordered) and two items out of stock and couldn't be substituted! So I'm going to have to go shopping anyway!

Crazycatlady123 · 23/12/2017 12:28

I used to do the Christmas food shop with my mum every year on 24th as 22nd/23rd was always so unbearable, 24th was always so much quieter. Only thing to consider this year is that 24th falls on a Sunday, so shop’s will be closing earlier than if it was any other day of the week.

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 12:47

Well, DH has just returned from his walk into town. We have ALDI sprouts ( hundreds of them), carrots (same), 3 broccoli, big bag of potatoes and 2 Hmm parsnips (He thought that was plenty!).
I have used my time wisely and have cleaned our empty fridge and sorted out the kitchen cupboards. I feel very accomplished!

OP posts:
FlaviaAlbia · 23/12/2017 12:53

Actually I think it will be fine. I think everyone has gone to the shops today based on the queues into supermarkets I drove past this morning!

InspMorse · 23/12/2017 12:53

I'm going to go & buy the more expensive stuff at M&S later or tomorrow! I think my plan (doing appearing to do bugger all) gets DH doing all the thinking for both of us! He's written me a list!
