Taking child late night shopping

AIBU taking my 5 year old late night shopping to 10pm even though he's in school tomorrow but only for 3 hours for the end of term. My husband said I'm been irresponsible but I always remember doing late night shopping with my parents at Christmas and loved the atmosphere.

ruleshelpcontrolthefun · 21/12/2017 20:16

I'd say irresponsible too. HTH.

Mousewatch · 21/12/2017 20:16

It's not something I would do but I wouldn't judge you either..... food or present shopping ?

Candyfloss1122 · 21/12/2017 20:16

If lo will enjoy it, and you are confident that he will be well behaved and not over tired, then I don't see the harm in a one off.

soundsystem · 21/12/2017 20:17

I wouldn't, but only because mine would be mega-grumpy. But if you think he'll enjoy it, then why not! You're not alone, anyway: I cut through Westfield quite often in the evening and there are always loads of kids. Although most of them don't look massively happy to be there, if I'm honest...

Dragging a 5 year old around the shops at this time of year sounds like a nightmare. Dragging them around well past bedtime sounds even worse!

mistermagpie · 21/12/2017 20:18

I wouldn't do it myself. Does it have to be til 10pm? By the time you get home and sorted it will be 11 before he's in bed, pretty late for me a 5 year old.

missiondecision · 21/12/2017 20:18

Does the child want to go. Fed and warm ??
Go , enjoy.

SausageChipsAndCurrySauce · 21/12/2017 20:19

Enjoy it by yourself is my advice. 5 year old is bound to get tired and grumpy ime!

Seasonseatings · 21/12/2017 20:19

Why 10pm??

Littlelambpeep · 21/12/2017 20:20

I would until half eight or nine at the max

Originalfoogirl · 21/12/2017 20:22

It’s not something I’d do. And seeing how many kids are rushing around, kicking off, parents nipping at them, when I go myself late at night at this time of year, it seems like it’s not a good idea.

It’s the end of a day, at the end of a week, at the end of a term with Christmas excitement thrown in for good measure. Our 8 year old couldn’t deal with it and certainly couldn’t have when she was 5.

And it’s unecessary. If you were determined to do it with him, why not wait til Friday night when it isn’t a school night?

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 21/12/2017 20:23

I couldn't simply coz its not doable with the other kids but my 5 year old would absolutely love night time shopping with me. She would easily stay up until then too and just sleep in a bit later the next day then have an early night

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 21/12/2017 20:25

Why do you need to take them?

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 21/12/2017 20:25

And what exactly are you shopping for?

Cherrycokewinning · 21/12/2017 20:26

Oh I would. Mine would be fine staying up

saoirse31 · 21/12/2017 20:27

Would definitely, enjoy!

crunchymint · 21/12/2017 20:28

OP only you know your DC and how they will react.

teaandakitkat · 21/12/2017 20:28

Yes I would if you think he will like it. It would be really special.

Sadly for me my kids hate the shops.

NormHonal · 21/12/2017 20:29

We used to do it once a year as kids, as a treat. Usually until about 9pm max though.

They won't be doing anything much in school tomorrow. It's not a big deal.

Skittlesss · 21/12/2017 20:30

Yep you are. 5 yrs old is no age to be in town at 10pm on a Thursday night. It's cold and miserable and they should be in bed. There's plenty of time next week for late nights and excitement.

holidayparkquestion · 21/12/2017 20:30

How is traipsing around shops doing shopping with your mum a treat?

restbiterepeat · 21/12/2017 20:31

I think, in principle, it's not unreasonable. It's not like they do anything productive in school on the last day. But if your DH thinks your dc will suffer for it and you are pushing it for the sake of some vague sense of nostalgia, then that's unnecessarily disruptive.

SavageBeauty73 · 21/12/2017 20:37

My idea of hell.

ILoveDolly · 21/12/2017 20:40

No. I'd hazard you were not 5 when you did this. I would take my 11 year old, that would be fun. I'd rather pour boiling syrup into my eyes than take my 5 year old anywhere near the shops in the evening past their bedtime. Totally unnecessary and what you will achieve is spoiling them for school the next day. Why ruin their enjoyment of their last day just for some selfish nostalgia trip? You are irresponsible.

Phalenopsisgirl · 21/12/2017 20:40

You know your 5 year old. Some will love this and cope fine with limited sleep. Other kids will be grumpy and over tired. You know best.
