To have refused to pay extra at the hairdresser?

Went to hairdresser today. Chatted about what I wanted with the hairdresser and then got taken to the sink by an assistant who shampoo'd my hair twice and then conditioner before taking me back to my seat with the hairdresser.

The hairdresser was combing my hair and said "ooohhh it smells lovely, Sarah did you use a treatment?" And Sarah replied that she did...

Next thing I know, I'm being charged £12.50 for a 'treatment' that I didn't ask for and that I didn't want. In fact, I'm not even convinced I had it at all!

WIBU to refuse to pay for it? The hairdresser made out that I was!

if they want to sell extras they have to make clear they are extras and how much it would costs.

That's very naughty. I'm a hairdresser and I would never do that I've used treatments when I've been running late as a little treat while my client is waiting for me but with no charge. If a client books in for it then that's fine. Also not everyone needs a conditioning treatment

Where not all like that. I rent a chair in a salon so I'm self employed a lot of my clients I've done for years, quite a few have become friends. I wouldn't even charge more using twice as much Colour and I don't charge for missed/ late appointment either. I think at this time of year everyone is running a little late with clients so it gives you a few more minutes to finish the previous client or get a quick drink, but no excuse it's a dirty trick and I would never do it

When I started hairdressing about 100 years ago we had a little chitty the size of a raffle ticket.
Everything was put on it.
Shampoo 10p
Conditioner 12p
Tea 20p
That died out after a while but it took ages for anyone to accept conditioner or a cup of tea. I spent ages reassuring older ladies that it was 'free' now.

Looks like the old ways are returning. How bloody weird.

Also should they not tell or rather ask you about applying products on you due to allergies.

YANBU, And good for you for refusing to pay. I got conned into a treatment once. My old hairdresser really oversold how amazing this treatment was going to be for my hair, the assistant literally sprayed something like a spray on-conditioner and then washed it straight off! Really don’t think it changed my hair in the 25 seconds it was on Hmm

It was shoulder length... had max 2” off.

He did give me a hair masque treatment for free, but I was a bit Hmm at the extra £10, especially as he’s the flaming owner and I’m paying top whack as it was...

I'd be a bit worried that they could only smell the treatment and not feel it too. Surely your hair should be softer/smoother/whatever if it had been used?

I can really relate to that: I always remember by Mum warning me then I was 16 that I should refuse a treatment or a cup of tea as I would be charged extra for it.
I was delighted to discover that my present hairdresser would give me a cuppa and a little bar of nice chocolate without adding to the bill, but I couldn't quite believe it the first time.

When it happened to dd I just assumed prices had gone up. It was a few weeks later that dd realised and said that the hairdresser had said “ do you want something (she couldn’t remember the exact word) on when your hair is washed?”. She certainly didn’t say it would cost x, dd was being polite and said yes. She’s been going there a bit and has never been asked previous to this.

I now pay them myself when I drop dd off, so before she has anything done and I think this stops them trying it again!

As a hairdresser myself, no YADNBU!!! Cheeky mare!! I reckon she had you on tbh. Your op didn't mention any discussion about treatments before starting - which we would do, you know, selling it. And also, price wasn't discussed and agreed, so you wouldn't have to pay.

And personally if I'm offering a treatment that is an extra service id be making sure the client could see the value and difference. Treatment applied, wrapped in warm towel and under heat for 10- 20mins. Not slapped on then straight off. That's what conditioner is for.

YANBU and she's a scam artist for insinuating anything different. You can't just upcharge someone for something they didn't want or ask for. I'd be finding a new hairdresser.

I’ve had it before. Was asked if I wanted a treatment and I said oh that would be nice without realising it was charged for. Older and wiser now! I’d always ask how much for any treatment. In my experience no one says ‘would you like a treatment. If so, that’ll be £12’ it’s always a bit too subtle.

This happened to me also. I rarely get a chance to go to the hairdresser as I generally can't afford it but last time I went it was £15 more than it should of been. I'd also been asked if I wanted this conditioner on but no mention of the cost.

I just paid but was gutted it had cost me more. I'll never go back.

I know, why do people deliberately like to make themselves unpopular. Are they stupid or something do they not understand that customers rightly talk about their experiences.

My old regular hairdresser did this to me twice only it was for much more money so I stopped going. He would just start doing stuff I hadn’t asked for saying my hair ‘needed’ this or that. At the end I’d be presented with a very long and expensive itemised bill. I felt conned. I notice not many people go there anymore so God knows what they’re charging the remaining customers to cover the overheads.

My hairdresser has everything listed separately on a big sign on her wall so you can pick and choose exactly what you want and know what you’ll be charged.

The bottom of the sign says “tea/coffee/chilled water and service with a smile FREE”. That always makes me laugh as one of the hairdressers is really moody and never smiles!

I hate this approach - they ask you if you want a head massage and that's free, would you like product on your hair and that's free then they ask if you'd like a conditioning treatment and it's so easy to think that's free too because they don't say "would you like an extra conditioning treatment for £20".
