To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?

Most comments on Facebook are proclaiming it “genius.” I don’t think a sexual innuendo is that genius TBF.

Plus why is it a woman lying on her back with a t shirt saying “power” and a man standing over her dominating her. They could have at least chosen another sexual innuendo.

Also difficult to explain to kids.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

iBiscuit I also wondered that earlier. I am not convinced they actually are Barbies?

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:24

Still want to know what the £25 went on...

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:26

My apologies - it is an actual Barbie. fashionista range. How empowered.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 11:29

Mattel won't care will they

their target market will mostly be "lie on your back and get fucked, woman" types.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 11:30

maybe the whole thing was set up as Wankstain's revenge. I can see the huge companies planning it a day or so after #metoo.

iBiscuit · 22/12/2017 11:31

I'm all for the use of toys for comic effect (Forest Friends is a favourite of mine), but I don't imagine Mattel would be particularly keen on Barbie being teabagged in an advertising campaign.

iBiscuit · 22/12/2017 11:32

Really? Confused

Target market for barbie is little girls?

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:33

Beltane what a bizarre thing to say about Barbie. Like her or loathe her , Barbie's general target market is young girls! Who are not thinking about fucking at all Confused

And, sadly, this particular doll comes from their curvy range - a well intentioned attempt to produce more realistically shaped dolls, along with dolls of different ethnicities and hair colours.

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:35

And, anyway, I still stand by that being the reason why the face is obscured (in all the ads). they never use the word Barbie at any point. they have thought that bit through.

DeadMorose · 22/12/2017 11:49

Has anyone noticed that the post has now tags to 2 young people? They appear to be creators of this shit photo. One of them works in “Moirae creative agency”.
I wonder how many of their clients will decide to change their advertising company to someone not sexist after this..?

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 11:51

I meant the parents who buy them for their daughters, not the daughters! sorry I thought that was obvious.

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:54

Well, no not really. Because children are the target markets for a toy.

SwedishEdith · 22/12/2017 11:54

Then you're seeing Poundland customers in the same way as Poundland - seeing poor people as thick.

iBiscuit · 22/12/2017 11:57

It's very recognisable as a Barbie though, just through the outfit. They don't need to use the name, nor to have a face on view.

If they'd really right it through they'd have used a Poundland knockoff.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 11:58

Swedish - um, no, I don't see that at all.

I think there's a lack of awareness around certain issues and the idea that women are just there for one reason is so entrenched that some people have it without realising they have it.

sorry, I probably need to go out and do something constructive with my hate instead of posting here....!

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 11:58

Which post has the tags? I have looked them up and they make no reference at all to Poundland on their website or Twitter feed. Lots of stuff about their other clients.

Anymajordude · 22/12/2017 12:00

It doesn't impress me. Not particularly funny, very skanky and generally a bit low.

Nor me. The only thing we buy in Poundland is bird food. We won't be buying it again. It is a combination of the crass advert and the puerile response of the company and its defenders on here putting us off.

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2017 12:11

Well if they did hire an 18 year old with a BTec a Creative Agency, how on earth did it cost £25? Someone's telling porkie pies!

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 12:14

Pumpkin - Angus Deayton hasn't presented HIGNFY since 2002. You've got your finger on the pulse I see

As I said, it is the most crashingly boring show ever that's about as funny as a hernia, so I'm not likely to be "on the pulse" with who does or doesn't present it now, am I? Hmm
Everyone has a different sense of humour, which some people fail to grasp.
Being told what you should or shouldn't find funny, or how you should be thinking as a female, or you're "thick" if you don't like only the approved things, is probably why it's gone viral in the first place - it's refreshing to see a different humour base being aired.
Just carry on, as seriously it's funny that you just don't get that the outrage IS the joke.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 12:17

Confused Grin
WTAF are you on about? Grin
Mattel's market are aimed at children! Grin
Oh jeez, I rest my case. The strange outrage comments are the joke.

LellyMcKelly · 22/12/2017 12:18

It’s fucking cringe. Pure Brexit.

custardlover · 22/12/2017 12:19

Pumpkin. This ad is designed in every level to be offensive to women. The joke is not the initial scorn it provokes, the joke is when the object defends it, not even understanding that the creators have nothing but contempt for the 'ffs it's a joke Army.' The joke is very literally on you. You have been insulted and are fiercely defending your aggressors. It's designed to divide - at least you recognised that - but that makes it sinister and nasty, not genius. I am sad for you.
