To give some perspective I have been at a low ebb cos have just had Norovirus & am on immunosuppressants which results in me making heavy weather of these things.
Just as I recovered, DD got it and I was awake most of the night on Monday when she spewed up all over her bed, carpet and hair-yuk!

Tonight I really wanted to get our tree decorated cos I had prioritised posting pressies and cards & I have just shatttered this bauble my Mum bought ( from the 50’s or 60’s?) which was one of a pair.

Mum loved Xmas & made it so special. She had such a great sense of fun & actually I don’t have much of hers but putting her baubles out reminds me of her so I just could have howled. Don’t even no how I dropped it.

Anyway if anybody happens to have one that they would like to sell or has seen one that I can buy somewhere I would be so grateful and if you don’t well thanks for reading anyway.Xmas Smile

Oh poor you, OP! Flowers

I really sympathise. First Christmas with DC1 and the expensive memento bauble of our honeymoon got smashed - I cried buckets too. In the end it's just a "thing" but you can't help but invest memories into things, and I was really sad about it.

Now the other "special" ones just get admired in their boxes and never make it to the tree. Too many animals & children who could destroy them, and I am scared!

Hope your week looks up. Take heart - at least you have posted presents and cards. I haven't ostrich head in sand

flimp · 21/12/2017 00:55

Darling, it's not the bauble that matters, it's what it means to you.

Your memories of your mum are here forever.

You can find something else to remember her by.

ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 01:16

NoSquirrels- poor you too! Flowers
Flimp- thanks for your kind words. I had terrible trouble getting my thread to post & had to re-start it but I see that on second attempt I left out that Mum died when I was 13 & I don’t have much of hers Sad.

I know I am being silly and I should be able to rely on my memories but I find it increasingly hard to remember her-then ocasionally someone will say something & it triggers a memory.

If you haven't thrown away the shards yet can you get a little glass jar with a cork stopper and put them in? Then wire around the lip of the jar and hang on tree as a new bauble

HerRoyalNotness · 21/12/2017 01:19

Like this kind of thing

HerRoyal -That is a brilliant idea!Than you! Why didn’t I think of it? I have put the shards in the kitchen bin (DD always forgets her slippers) but I will have a careful rummage to see what I can salvage. In the meantime I am scouring T’internet!

Where do you reckon I could scource the jar-Lakeland?

OP posts:
ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 01:31

The bauble was about 9cm across. I know it was expensive at the time - my Dad told me she was evasive when he asked her how much it cost!
He didn’t really mind!

A small glass spice jar would do, with a ribbon around the rim.

I broke the last of my childhood baubles about three years ago, and the kids looked at me as though I'd gone mad as I sobbed Blush

Maryz · 21/12/2017 01:35

This type of thing

They are expensive; there must be cheaper alternatives, but the curve would be great for a hanging ribbon

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/12/2017 01:35

That's a brilliant idea! Craft shops sell nice glass jars with cork stoppers and the like.

Or use something like this

sandgrown · 21/12/2017 01:45

I have just been given some old baubles. I will look if there is anything similar to yours.

AlrightBabby · 21/12/2017 01:46

Oh they have those clear fillable baubles in Home Bargains, 4 for a couple of quid!

ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 01:50

Hi Maryz! Remember talking to you on the thread about poor little Charlie. Aagh sorry about your baubles too. Those jars do look good.

Sandgrown - Thank you!

Well I have managed to rescue the shards- had taken the precaution of putting them in a thick plastic bag. Xmas Smile

YellowBucket · 21/12/2017 02:22

Could you glue the larger pieces (or even just the top part) to a bauble of the same size and colour? Kind of like a mosaic. It could then hang on your tree again.

You can still use the smaller pieces for the jar and retain as much of the bauble as possible.

ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 02:25

Yes Yellow - that’s another good idea. So many inventive & creative people on here!

Foobarjar · 21/12/2017 02:37

If you have a PC with chrome, save the photo, right click and you can search Google for similar images. You may find one on eBay or similar that way.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I can't imagine a glass jar able to take a 9cm bauble, that would be light enough for a Christmas tree branch. Maybe a plastic one?

So sorry you broke something so precious to you. Maybe save all the shards are see if you can have a glass smith turn it into a beautiful new ornament?

ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 02:44

Good points Foo.
Am off to bed & will give this some more thought.
Thanks all. Night night & good luck with all your Christmas shopping & final preparations Xmas Smile
