To be gutted about breaking this (photo)

To give some perspective I have been at a low ebb cos have just had Norovirus & am on immunosuppressants which results in me making heavy weather of these things.
Just as I recovered, DD got it and I was awake most of the night on Monday when she spewed up all over her bed, carpet and hair-yuk!

Tonight I really wanted to get our tree decorated cos I had prioritised posting pressies and cards & I have just shatttered this bauble my Mum bought ( from the 50’s or 60’s?) which was one of a pair.

Mum loved Xmas & made it so special. She had such a great sense of fun & actually I don’t have much of hers but putting her baubles out reminds me of her so I just could have howled. Don’t even no how I dropped it.

Anyway if anybody happens to have one that they would like to sell or has seen one that I can buy somewhere I would be so grateful and if you don’t well thanks for reading anyway.Xmas Smile

It looks like the way it has broken has left the top half a dome. Could you glue some ribbon/braid around around the the bottom edge to disguise the break and hang it like that? x

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 21/12/2017 03:08

I have a set of small square glass and brass opening frames. I think they came from Not On The High Street. They have rustic ribbon to hang them up and I put precious things like this in them to hang up. They are flat so you would have to break the bauble down further but it would look stunning in one of those frames and would be an instant hanging ornament rather than needing too much fettling.

Amazon also have the fillable acrylic sphere ornaments, just search for "Fillable Ball Ornament DIY".

SteelMagnolia · 21/12/2017 03:57

Might be nice to save a small piece for a round glass locket like this

trixymalixy · 21/12/2017 04:03

I would have cried too. The Works have clear plastic tillable baubles.

Loonoonow · 21/12/2017 04:12

The UK equivalent of Dealz is Poundland (where there are many bargains to be had). I hope you find something perfect OP.

ProudAunty2nine · 21/12/2017 04:13

I put things out every year at Christmas that given to me as a child (I am 53 now) and have 3 little decorations that my precious Nan used ( she died in 1974) at Christmas. Christmas would not be Christmas without them they are my memories and I always feel extra special hanging them and placing them out like reaching back to childhood. Christmas is a lot about memories and these are special to me and I know yours are to you, no wonder you got upset, I would too.

Now I hope I can help with the bottles, I do not know if they are big enough but The Works have little jars 3cm high £1 for a pack of 8 ...hope that helps.

FullOfXmasCheerOfCourse · 21/12/2017 04:50

Amazon sell lovely little jars with pretty rubbers in with a cork stopper, search for honey bee rubbers. The jar would be perfect and they are extremely cheap.

I have some plastic fillable baubles if you want me to send you one . I can pop it in post today if you pm me your address .
I have a bauble on my tree that is basically red tissue paper crumpled up with bits of glass bauble stuck to it !
I felt so sad for you when I read your op.

lidoshuffle · 21/12/2017 06:50

I really sympathise Scarlett. When I had to empty the old family house after my parents died, the only thing I really wanted was the 60-70s Christmas tree decorations. I never found them, they must have been thrown away. One of them was just like your broken one.

Funny, I remember them so clearly from almost 50 years ago, and all those warm childhood memories associated with them.

Roussette · 21/12/2017 07:07

OP, I have the equivalent of these from my childhood (and I'm old!) and hang them on the tree everywhere, I only have 3 left and they are precious.

Have a look on Ebay there's lots of vintage and old baubles

Oh OP, I do feel your pain!

I have a bauble that I loved as a child, it was passed to my DM by my DGM, DF says he remembers it on their tree in the 50’s.

Every year I take it off the tree, it gets wrapped in layers and layers of bubble wrap and put in my memory box for the following year. No one apart from me is allowed to touch it. I would be totally gutted if it broke.

I hope you find a solution, the ideas you’ve been given here are great! Smile

Is this the blue one in this set on eBay?

I think you need to search for mercury glass hand painted BTW - bet it was expensive!

ScarlettSahara · 21/12/2017 11:34

Oh my gosh- so many replies . I am so touched & it feels comforting to know that others would feel the same. A huge thank you and secret un-mumsnetty hug!
Lido - yes I can understand you feeling upset because it is just a way of trying to re-create precious memories. I only had 13 Christmases with my Mum & obviously can’t remember the first few. Flowers

Trumpton- that is so kind of you Flowers.
Grumpy - you are right. That ebay one is the exact replica of Mum’s blue one. Think I will carry on looking for the red but will consider the blue and I love all the suggestions I have received.
