To be pissed off at being 'just' a nurse?

bottleofwater · 18/12/2017 22:45

Three times in the last week Ive had different family members making sarky comments regarding some recent achievements & promotion at work.

Usually comments along the lines of "Oh Florence Nightingale you will be telling the Doctors what to do now" " You will be a surgeon in no time" & " What do nurses know about blood pressures, they are not doctors".

Im so fed up of how its like being a nurse is rubbish & that only Doctors are of any value Angry

Also comments regarding how I dont make the same amount of money as other family members but thats probably another thread!

Not sure what they think nurses actually do but aibu to be pissed off at the constant sneering at me?

This is eminding me of one of the oddities of going into hospital, the marked open rivalry between the various professions, all on display for me to observe.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:40

why don't you answer? straightforward question!

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:40

At least you know not all consultants are doctors. That’s a good start 🙄

ZivaDiva · 19/12/2017 20:41

What a gratuitously nasty person you are Amelia

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 19/12/2017 20:42

Amelia my bum was wiped by nurses when I was in intensive care. HTH.

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:43

Question:does this rivalry affect patient care?

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 19/12/2017 20:44

So nurses wipe bums. Anything wrong with or demeaning about that? I'm perplexed why this is an issue. It's part of patient care.

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:45

Ringle the rivalry is a social construct caused by people trying undermine particular roles of the MDT.

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:47

Fruit, you're saying it suits people with power to set people against each other?

It is really noticeable in hospitable, sometimes funny, often not.

MDT=? Medical disciplines?

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:49

I am staggered that any adult is trying to put another adult down on the grounds that they administer personal care.

Headofthehive55 · 19/12/2017 20:49

What an odd question amelia!

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:50

Whatever, yawn,

Nurses aren't angels, they are no different to anyone else trying to earn a crust.
The sense of entitlement to a higher salary/status is wildly out of kilter with the real world as evidenced in this thread.

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 19/12/2017 20:50

ringle

I don't think the rivalry is in the heads of the nurses and doctors, actually. Mostly in people who aren't nurses or doctors. I don't think nurses and doctors go to work and think of each other as rivals. Good doctors know that good relationship with nurses will make their job easier.

Also, it's not unusual for nurses to save the doctor's arse, especially during the early training years. Imagine, you're fresh out of med school, and it's your first few months in the hospital, you'd need the help of seasoned nurses who have seen these cases a thousand times in the past.

Polarbearflavour · 19/12/2017 20:51

AmeliaFlashtart - you sound unhinged, I hope you feel better soon and your life improves.

teaandcakeat8 · 19/12/2017 20:51

DP is a Doctor on A&E.

Whilst he massively respects and has ultimate admiration for nurses, his perspective on the difference between the roles is the level and volume of decision making. He is constantly evaluating and making fast decisions which can impact on a life and he finds this the most exhausting and challenging part of the role. He doesn't think that a nurse (and certainly a band 5 nurse) has the same level of autonomy and pressure/responsibility as a doctor. That's not to say they don't have some; but not to the same extent.

But this is the same in most sectors both public and private. With greater responsibility and decision making comes more money and higher positions. Nursing is really no different.

Chocolate254 · 19/12/2017 20:52

Amelia you sound like you need to go and see a dr yourself! Somethings definately wrong inside your head Confused

Headofthehive55 · 19/12/2017 20:52

What I find horrific is anyone putting anyone else down. Surely the ops relatives should be congratulating, not belittling. IT shows what sort of people they are.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:53

No - nowt wrong with personal care and wiping bums.

I have seen 16 pages of nurses claim they do the same job as doctors, correct doctors mistakes, perform surgery, prescribe drugs etc and basically perform the same role as a doctor who I'm pretty sure don't do the personal care aspect.

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:55

What do you do for a living Amelia?

GetOutOfMYGarden · 19/12/2017 20:56

This is all part of people not respecting the MDT. These days it seems that everyone wants to do the best bits of being a doctor (autonomy, taking control of a situation, being known for being bloody clever) but nobody wants to do the shitty bits, nor do they want to spend 4-5 years in medical school with every bit of the MDT picking on them because they know they won't be able to be massively shitty to them again once they qualify.

NeilPetark · 19/12/2017 20:57

MDT=? Medical disciplines?

Multidisciplinary team.

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:58

Ah! Multi disciplinary team!

TDHManchester · 19/12/2017 20:59

We all have our roles to play in what passes for society and so at all levels there should be mutual respect. Everyone is the same to me whether its some chap pushing a barrow around the streets litter picking, or whether he /she is an eminent surgeon. Respect is earned not bestowed as of right. The other week i was in local town, it was pissing down and i saw a council chap litter picking. I thoughts, that guy deserves respect. He is out there making the environment better for all of us despite the feckless idiots who drop litter.

Meanwhile i see privileged farts in the house of lords raking it in and taking up their seats just because of privileged family background. No respect.

And so to nurses. Thankfully i have so far had good health. My research tells me that if you enter hospital, always be in possession of a box of Roses .

Monoblock67 · 19/12/2017 21:00

Wooow this thread has grown arms and legs since I last checked! Amelia, you’re so full of hatred, honestly. Nurses are just asking for respect which they so deserve.

Grumpbum · 19/12/2017 21:02

I’ve not wiped a bottom for 10+ years but started patients on courses of drugs and treatment plans instead. HTH
