To be pissed off at being 'just' a nurse?

Three times in the last week Ive had different family members making sarky comments regarding some recent achievements & promotion at work.

Usually comments along the lines of "Oh Florence Nightingale you will be telling the Doctors what to do now" " You will be a surgeon in no time" & " What do nurses know about blood pressures, they are not doctors".

Im so fed up of how its like being a nurse is rubbish & that only Doctors are of any value Angry

Also comments regarding how I dont make the same amount of money as other family members but thats probably another thread!

Not sure what they think nurses actually do but aibu to be pissed off at the constant sneering at me?

OP posts:

If you bothered to look into the history yourself amelia you would find that nursing gets lower pay and status largely due to the fact it remains female dominated. Medicine was male dominated and thus paid more.

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:18

You do live in a nursing bubble - you all talk about band 5s and 6s, no-one gives a toss.

You obviously do though, otherwise you wouldn’t keep replying.

FYI, as a band 5 nurse I’m responsible for managerial and clinical supervision of healthcare assistants, I’m responsible for training healthcare assistants, and I’m responsible for managing performance issues in healthcare assistants. I’m a manager. I’m not a dogs body.

Headofthehive55 · 19/12/2017 20:20

What you are seeing, is a diverse profession.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:21

You aren't low paid - you just aren't as well paid as doctors and other more qualified medical professionals - get over it.

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:22

I never said I was lowly paid - but being as I’m expected to do the work of 2 nurses as we can’t recruit, I think we should get double the pay Wink

PurplePillowCase · 19/12/2017 20:22

well, you are 'just a nurse'
not a dr or suregon.
you are doing an important job, which is reasonably well paid.

I could have snogged the lovely nurse who patched up my broken arm today. without her the wait would have been even longer, and her friendly words warmed me up inside.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:23

I’m responsible for training healthcare assistants, and I’m responsible for managing performance issues in healthcare assistants

You aren't training them to perform surgery love, you are showing them how to do the role. get over your inflated sense of importance.

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:24

you just aren't as well paid as doctors and other more qualified medical professionals

Apart from doctors dentists, which health professions are more qualified than nurses and therefore worthy of higher pay?

And what is their role exactly Amelia? Being as you know in great detail what my and their role is why aren’t you training me? Hmm

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:26

I’m a prison nurse love. I don’t “wipe arses”.

ginteresting · 19/12/2017 20:28

I preferred the earlier goady post of nurses like to dress up as sexy nurses whenever we get the chance Smile. GF.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:30

From OPs op

Usually comments along the lines of "Oh Florence Nightingale you will be telling the Doctors what to do now" " You will be a surgeon in no time

They aren't disparaging the nursing profession they are taking the piss out of OP and the inflated sense of self-importance (that is very apparent amongst the nurses on this thread).

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:31

Out of interest though who does wipe bums now?

Grumpbum · 19/12/2017 20:31

@ameliaflashtart I pity you

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 19/12/2017 20:32

Nurses have a different skillset. There are things that doctors can't do that nurses can, and vice versa. Why the need for comparison between the two? Both are integral to the healthcare system.

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:32

Blimey chaps, you make lawyers look civilised! What's with all the status anxiety?

OP, your family are pillocks.
Please continue to describe your achievements and to be proud of them.

Ps £48 is v. Good!

Headofthehive55 · 19/12/2017 20:32

You still haven't replied as to how you feel nurses, with their lowly knowledge are able to train medical students....?

Oh did you realise there are nurses who perform surgery?

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:33

ginteresting why, do you not dress up as a nurse in your spare time too? 😂😉 unfortunately my uniform stinks of dead rats and cockroaches so I doubt v much DP would find it a turn on!

ringle · 19/12/2017 20:34

I have noticed that politicians nowadays talk about "hardworking nurses". Yours is the one profession everyone can admire, whether or not they grasp the technical skills involved.

ginteresting · 19/12/2017 20:34

I prefer bitter keyboard warrior as my costume of choice.

AmeliaFlashtart · 19/12/2017 20:35

Who wipes bums now? I genuinely don't know.

Consultants?, Doctors? Physios? Radiographers? Nurses? HCA?
who?

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:38

Amelia if you genuinely can’t answer that question I suggest you shut up and GTFO.

FruitCider · 19/12/2017 20:39

ginteresting 😂🙈

ginteresting · 19/12/2017 20:40

If I still worked on the wards, and I was on shift, that would be me. Providing personal
care for people that can't, is part and parcel of a job that I am unashamed of no matter what your trying to insinuate with your agenda, you sound unhinged.
