To ask how big is your house?

I'm grateful for what we have but I feel like I'm suffocating day to day.

We have a terraced house consisting of a small kitchen and lounge downstairs, a master bedroom, box room and tiny bathroom upstairs.
There's me, OH, DS (3), newborn DS and DDog.

There's no porch or wide hallways to have extra storage.
You walk straight into the kitchen where all the post and tat gets dumped on the nearest worktop or the table, no room for coat rack so jackets get dumped on the kitchen chairs, lounge has huge toybox as there's no room to keep DSs toys in his bedroom as its so small and now I'm having to figure out how to fit 2 DCs in there. The car seat for DS2 is in the lounge also as there's nowhere else to keep it.

There's clutter everywhere you turn despite trying to keep on top of it and it's a constant cycle of trying to cut down on stuff etc.
It makes me feel really down and I struggle to clear my head, it makes the days with the kids really difficult as sometimes you have to walk over stuff or trip over a bouncer or toy to get to the other side of the room.
I'm dreaming of a nice 3 bedroom house with an open plan kitchen and diner and a nice big lounge, oh and a utility room Blush

AIBU to ask how big is your house and if you're happy with it?

4 bed detached but not huge by any means. Playroom, living room / diner, kitchen / utility and loo downstairs. Front door opens directly onto bottom of stairs so no storage which is annoying. Upstairs have master bedroom and ensuite, 2nd largish bedroom, small bathroom, very small bedroom and dd's room which isn't bad floor space size wise but has a sloping roof.

There's me, dh, dd (7) and ds (10) . Also dog and cat. We do have a garden with a massive shed though for bikes / sledges / paddling pools / lawnmower etc etc:

Part of me would like a bigger house but having spent most of the year decluttering part of me thinks I don't want more space because it'd just end up filled with more stuff iyswim?

LadyHonoriaDedlock · 19/12/2017 01:25

Three kids, me and dp in a three bed semi. Not ideal as 13 and 7yr old have to share a room but it's OK, we're a lot luckier than some

ToothTrauma · 19/12/2017 01:55

Entrance hall, downstairs loo, kitchen, utility, dining room, living room, conservatory. Upstairs are four bedrooms (one en-suite) and a bathroom.

There’s only me, DH and the pets. It’s far too big. We bought it thinking we’d fill it with kids Sad

ToothTrauma · 19/12/2017 01:56

P.S. For 10 years we lived in a series of awful tiny flats. Went a bit house-mad when we moved out of London I think!

Phillipa12 · 19/12/2017 02:03

3 double bed, 1 bathroom terraced cottage over 3 floors with lounge, kitchen/diner, utility, playroom and large hall. I went from a very large 5 bed, 3 bath, 4 reception room detached house set in 1 acre of garden to a 2 up, 2 down during my divorce, it was an eye opener but it made me realise what space i actually needed and what wasnt necessary. My cottage ticked all the boxes, lots of storage and enough space without being too big for myself and my 3 boys. I love my new house, it is the perfect size.

80sMum · 19/12/2017 02:08

Ours was built as a worker's cottage in about 1920. It's detached and was originally a very small 2-up, 2-down with a scullery but no proper kitchen but was extended and modernised in the 70s and again in the 90s. It's now got 3.5 bedrooms, 1 upstairs bathroom and a downstairs shower room, a small kitchen, a living room and a dining room. All the rooms are quite small; it took ages finding a sofa small enough to fit in the living room!

CommanderDaisy · 19/12/2017 02:16

Old farmhouse on 8 hectares with separate 2 bedroom detached studio.
4 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, two lounges and a study space. Pool and tennis court. 2.5 cows ( one is pregnant), Dh , me, 2 kids, 2 dogs and a rainforest remnant plus dam and well.
Regional area 20 minutes to beach, 15 to nearest town, 20 to next.
Recently added new kitchen and living area, the existing living area was tiny before now is perfect as a kid den.

yippyyappy · 19/12/2017 02:28

Four bed, two living rooms, dining room, playroom, laundry room, breakfast room, kitchen, my office and dh's office, basement games room, tv room, three bathrooms, mud room and sauna.

This was coming from the tiniest bedsit in London. I did have to move to the arse end of nowhere in another country through and Dh and I have been slowly adding rooms as we get the time and money to do it (pros of marrying a builder!)

HashtagTired · 19/12/2017 02:49

Like our house but would just like the bedrooms to be a bit bigger.

Vanessatiger · 19/12/2017 02:55

Single storey detached, 3 beds, 4 bathrooms (all ensuite and 1 guest bathroom in the hallway). Big living room with a play area and with an open plan kitchen with kitchen island. Two verandahs with chairs and tables , sizable garden for a playhouse with a slide, swing set and sand box.
Outside there’s a little cottage for storage. 4-5 cars can park in the front of the house.

nestletollhouse · 19/12/2017 03:40

Detached 4 bed. Two lounges, separate dining, 2 bath. Double garage. It's big. I love it.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 19/12/2017 03:58

Found my dream house and moved out of London to live there 4 years ago. London house was 4 beds but felt small downstairs with 2DC.

Now In big 5 bed house mid 19th century. Large kitchen breakfast family room, utility ( best thing ever), dining room, sitting room, playroom, study, 3 bathrooms and a 1 bed annexe.

Love it love it love it but Jesus is it a money pit!!

MumsGoneToIceland · 19/12/2017 05:18

2 dc (8 and 10), but no dog. in a 3 bed, 1 bathroom house . Narrow hallway but big enough for coat hooks and a shoe cupboard. lounge/diner. Any smaller than that and we would have struggled for space so I can see why you are struggling.

Assuming moving is not an option for you....Our car seat and pushchair lived in the car. Is that a possibility for you? Can you put coat hooks on the wall rather than a stand E.g by the stairs or failing that store coats in wardrobes? Large plastic toy bucket for shoes or ikea do narrow wall units for storing shoes? For paperwork, you could get a nice wooden box, p for the kitchen work top, that it gets put in. Wall units and cupboards from IKEA, they have some v smart solutions for small spaces. Mount shelves above door frames. HTH’s.

westcoastnortherneragain · 19/12/2017 05:23

3000 sq ft with 5 double bedrooms, playroom , kitchen/ dining room, living room, walk-in closet in master bedroom, three bathrooms

speakout · 19/12/2017 05:26

OP I am sorry you are feeling squashed.

My last house felt like that. We saved like crazy and moved.

I now live in a 5 bedroomed house, huge amount of downstairs space, large porch, big hallway, massive rooms, big open plan kitchen diner, 20 foot wide conservatory.
I feel very lucky.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/12/2017 05:27

When our dc were born we lived in a 3 bed terrace (2 double bedrooms plus a box room), tiny upstairs bathroom, then downstairs there was a through lounge/diner and a reasonable sized kitchen. There was a narrow hallway and a downstairs loo as well. It was in a city and handy for shops/work etc but parking was a nightmare.

We moved out of the city centre to a village a few miles outside in order to get more space and found a 4 bed detached house with living room, study, pkayroom/dining room and massive kitchen, plus double garage and off street parking. For the same price as our terraced house.

For us the move was very positive, as we gained the space and a more rural lifestyle. But it wouldn't suit everyone.

speakout · 19/12/2017 05:29

My 5 bedroomed house cost me £210K - two years ago. I , with garden in a leafy location, in perfect condition and 20 minutes from the heart of the capital.

mogulfield · 19/12/2017 05:31

5 bedrooms, 2 decent reception rooms as well as large kitchen, 2 big bathrooms, large conservatory, outbuildings and 2 acres... but we used to live in the south east (in tiny 3 bed terrace), and now live rurally in Wales.
Very happy with the move, close enough to Chester/Liverpool/Manchester, but 5 minutes drive from gorgeous pine forests where you can walk for 10 miles and not see a road/other person and snowdonia with some fantastic mountain biking and walking (both of which I’m obsessed with).
I was anxious and sad to move away from London, I can’t quite believe that now.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/12/2017 05:36

Speakout that sounds lovely but I'm guessing the Capital in your case is Cardiff rather than London?

meltingsugar · 19/12/2017 05:38

Ours isn't huge in terms of square footage but perfect for us. Four bed Victorian end terrace. Big porch on the front for coats and shoes, into the dining room which is a bit of a hallway. Kitchen and bathroom at the back and front room on the right as you walk into the dining room. Bedrooms are all doubles, we use one as a study and one as a dressing room. Also got an upstairs loo which negates the annoyance of downstairs bathroom for me. Downside is our garden isn't huge (we have dogs) but it's big enough and there are glorious walks on the doorstep. Our previous house was an ex council two bed semi, so very spacious but no charm, which is the addition that I love about this one.

speakout · 19/12/2017 05:41

Emma- not Cardiff.

speakout · 19/12/2017 05:44

I must be prissy about coats and shoes in the hall or porch.

I can't abide that.

We are a family of five. If each person kept two coats and two pairs of shoes in the porch that would be 30 items cluttering up space downstairs.
We all have bedrooms and wardrobes. That's where clothes and shoes live.

devondream · 19/12/2017 05:44

We live in Europe so the houses are designed differently. We have a basement on street level plus 2 other floors.

In all we have 2 garages, a pantry, a boiler room, a laundry room, a gym, 3 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, a wc in the hall, an open plan playroom on the top floor, plus a large open plan kitchen/dinning room and a sitting room.

We bought the house 20 years ago when it cost the same as a 2 bed terrace in SE England!

Prices have shot up since then here so it has been a good investment but more importantly a lovely home.

We are very lucky to have so much room.

Ski4130 · 19/12/2017 05:48

We lived in a 3 bed victorian terrace, with downstairs bathroom, with our three children before moving, so I sympathise op. We had zero storage, so I ended up being really imaginative with where I stored stuff, and invested in some decent storage units as it frustrated me so much. Just remember, the big baby stuff isn't forever (car seat, pram, plastic stuff) and my two eldest (now 10 and 13) have far less stuff now, and we don't need toy boxes in.the sitting room anymore.

We live in a 3 storey, 4 bed new build now. What it lacks in character it makes up for by having 3 toilets, plenty of storage and a room for each child. I loved our old house, but now we've got more space I can see how cramped we were there.

ChristmasAddict · 19/12/2017 06:17

We have a good sized kitchen diner and a decent sitting room. No utility which would be really useful. Middle floor has two decent sized double bedrooms and a generous single and a decent family bathroom. Top floor has lovely spacious master and ensure and loft space. We live in a cheap part of the country though.
