Aibu to ask you to help me help my baby?

He's 7 months old and terribly constipated today. Every poo haa resulted in him crying in pain and ends up being little more than a pebble.
I've done bicycle legs, warm bath and massages to no avail. We have no fruit juices and I can't stand to see him upset anymore.

What can I do? Feel like such a crap mum just now, the poor mite.

Dr recommended lactulose for one of my DC when they were constipated as a baby, I got a big bottle from chemist ... it worked a treat.

ElphabaTheGreen · 18/12/2017 21:35

Prunes didn't do anything to unblock mine either. I gave them puréed prunes in yoghurt as a preventative but it did nothing for actually unblocking them.

Also - no chemist will sell you glycerine suppositories for an eight month old baby as a PP suggested. They won't even sell them to you for a school-aged child as their rectums are too delicate and other methods are more effective.

One thing I forgot to add to the (patented Elphaba-unblock-o-matic) method above was to put a little KY around the anus before you start pumping the legs to help it all slide out slightly more painlessly.

Hopeful103 · 18/12/2017 21:38

Poor baby. P fruits - prunes, pear, peaches.

A little brown sugar in warm water also works

sailorcherries · 18/12/2017 21:40

Thanks everyone we'll try the prunes and sugar water followed by a trip to the chemist if it doesn't unclog him.

Prunes or pears always worked for my little one. Hope your little one feels better soon

Somethingfantastic89 · 18/12/2017 21:43

It's been a while now but massaging the baby's rectum/anus with vaseline always did the trick with mine.

Willswife · 18/12/2017 21:45

I used to put chopped prunes in porridge for breakfast, worked a treat.

PoorYorick · 18/12/2017 21:48

Gently stew pears and apples together, hint of cinnamon, puree, add raisins and/or prunes. Worked an absolute treat for us.

Jakeyboy1 · 18/12/2017 21:58

The Ella's Kitchen prune pudding ouch used to work
Wonders for my two 👌 failing that try syrup of figs or I'm not sure what age they can have Movicol from the doctor?

Jakeyboy1 · 18/12/2017 21:58

Pouch not ouch!

sailorcherries · 18/12/2017 22:00

He's sound asleep atm so not too bothered by it but clearly in pain trying to pass it.

His grandad has him tomorrow though as I have a KIT day so a poonami never hurt anyone.

If you have a potty you can sit him on it when he starts straining and the gravity can help. I used to have to do that with my DD and it worked really well.

PeaceLoveAndDixie · 18/12/2017 22:06

^^sitting my lo on the toilet helps as it's a good position for opening bowels

PoorYorick · 18/12/2017 22:09

Poor little thing. I remember how awful it was seeing my poor little baby in pain. That puree I suggested worked really well though, and tastes rather nice.

MiltonTheCockroach · 18/12/2017 22:10

Pineapple juice.

Sadly discovered its 'shit through the eye of a needle' with one of mine during a long haul flight.

Flopjustwantscoffee · 18/12/2017 22:13

Take him out for the day/ to meet friends at a cafe etc without spare clothes. It was the only way I could get mine to poo when he was little.

glueandstick · 18/12/2017 22:15

Ella’s kitchen prune pouches here too. Only I had forgotten what prunes do and thought ‘ooh prunes, that’ll be something different’

Gulped down one. Gave another a few hours later.

Never again. Took a whole new meaning to a shit storm.

MytToeHurtsBetty · 18/12/2017 22:30

I used to get brown sugar from coffee shops and have them on stock... brilliant just dilute in a little water... job done in minutes

KatieHaslam22 · 18/12/2017 22:44

My health visitor recommended diluted apple juice (not concentrated) when my little on had this problem.

mummy2oneandtwo · 18/12/2017 23:02

Go to the doctors for an enema called 'Relaxit' my little boy needed some help every now and then when things got really bad, also lactulose for more day to day use , which I would put in his milk once a day to soften everything up.

Olivecoloureddonkey · 18/12/2017 23:04

Extra fluids! More water or diluted squash and prunes or lactulose. Vaseline on his anus to stop any more discomfort than needed. Poor thing

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 18/12/2017 23:40

Also one for the Ella's kitchen prunes pouch. Think it's imaginatively called Prunes, Prunes, Prunes.

Didn't need it until we started potty training. Gave one mixed in a few small yoghurts. Little one loved the "special yoghurt" and it did the job so quickly. Now we keep own as back-up.

00alwaysbusymum · 18/12/2017 23:43

Is it something he's eating that makes him worse ?

sailorcherries · 19/12/2017 17:11

I think it's just the changed diet. He's never been a big formula feeder and with 3 meals a day is taking max 25oz a day and won't drink water.
It's softening up today with the help of pears. Got the prunes on standby!
