Outside Christmas lights - what time to turn off?

stretchmarkqueenie · 18/12/2017 19:48

Neighbours across the road have put some very bright, flashing Christmas lights outside their house, and tend to leave them on all night. Our bedroom is at the front of our house, so I'm getting disturbed at night when I'm trying to sleep. I'm all for decking the halls and prettying up the house but surely after a time, say 9 (?), the lights can be turned off?? Anyone else had this issue?

OP posts:

I switch ours off when we go to bed but other neighbours seem to have theirs on all day and night.

starzig · 18/12/2017 20:18

The ones across the road from us are on all the time. I love them

froggers1 · 18/12/2017 20:25

Our next door neighbours have flashing lights..hideous. I think they'll just think I'm a snob if I tell them to turn them off...hilaire cos she acts like Lady of the Manor

MumW · 18/12/2017 20:31

The lights on our estate are all off by midnight.

I love seeing lights over Xmas, but really hate it when they flash. Still lights have a rather fairytale feel about them but flashing lights are more like a fairground.

MrsHathaway · 18/12/2017 20:40

Ours are "warm" and static. The timer turns them off at around 11pm.

Our window looks at some neighbours' blue lights and a street light (new, white LED). The street light is definitely more annoying.

We have blackout blinds in bedrooms, with curtains over. Best of both worlds.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 18/12/2017 20:43

Ooh neighbours have flashing blue and white lights in all the windows, flashing lights outside and in the bushes. They go off at a reasonable time though.

MsMims · 18/12/2017 20:57

I love seeing neighbours lights, makes it feel all festive and Christmassy. Definitely not irritated by them and miss them when they’re taken down!

PollyMycroft · 18/12/2017 21:44

9.30 on a timer. We don't have a house directly facing us but we are in a semi-detached so could irritate next door easily.

Abbotswood · 18/12/2017 21:48

When I go to bed, about midnight but they just twinkle.

EmilyChambers79 · 18/12/2017 21:51

Ours don't flash but go off at 10pm. Come on 7am till 8am and then on at 430pm.

CrochetBelle · 18/12/2017 21:53

I have twinkling 'warm white' lights on the window, and static lights elsewhere. They go off either when I go to bed, or around 12.30am if I'm still kicking about.

Unless people have REALLY shit curtains, I fail to see how someone else's lights would have such an effect Confused

DropZoneOne · 18/12/2017 21:56

Static warm white here, off at 11pm when we go to sleep but I'd set the timer earlier if it was bothering anyone. There's no-one directly opposite us though.

Witchend · 18/12/2017 22:33

Yes. I just went and asked my neighbours to turn them off after 10pm and they died

Extreme measures. Grin

HermionesRightHook · 18/12/2017 23:23

About 6pm. Flashing lights are the devil's work. Why the hell should your neighbours have to get blackout curtains fitted just to avoid looking at bloody flashing lights.

Non flashing ones - providing they're not blue, which are NOT Christmassy - about ten or eleven?

MyKingdomForACaramel · 18/12/2017 23:56

I’ve just spent about two minutes laughing uncontrollably at *shirleys typo

MamehaSan · 19/12/2017 00:04

I blame the fairy light manufacturers for annoying flashy lights! We have two sets on the tree outside, one is static and the other one flashes (sorry). Despite being labelled as having the ability to select different flash modes, whenever they're turned on the default is Mad Flash, even if you've previously set them to static. Very irritating...

pisacake · 19/12/2017 00:05

We have lasers, flashing lights, inflatables, and they go off at 11pmish (analogue timer).

Some of the neighbours leave them on 24 hours.

Everyone can afford curtains round here, so ?

BackforGood · 19/12/2017 00:11

Because I haven't got round to getting the timer out yet, ours go off when I go to bed, (about midnight usually).
I'd say it is the responsibility of people who can only sleep in darkness, to line their bedroom windows with decent thick curtains or blinds.
Otherwise you get light from streetlamps, gritting lorries, fire engines, police cars, ambulances, etc anyway.

Lovestonap · 19/12/2017 06:16

I find external Christmas decorations a good marker of who is or is not my 'kind' of people.

Pisacake you will probably be relieved to hear you and I would not be friends.

OP could you casually mention to your neighbours that burglars are targeting houses with Christmas lights still on, as they are a distraction and make it harder for people to see people breaking in?

BedtimeTea · 19/12/2017 07:00

11-12 at night we switch them off. They stay on all night on xmas eve, xmas night and nye. No flashing, intrusive or moving lights.

Same here! Our bedroom is on the front, and across the road have flashing lights in all colours across their whole fence and house that go on long past midnight. It's not kept me awake tooo badly so Im just putting up with it. It really is rude and inconsiderate though. If you are being disturbed then do tell your neighbours.

LadyB49 · 19/12/2017 22:57

I think I'll keep the static warm white lights on my front garden tree all year round. They can be timed to come on at say...... 10pm During the summer months.

DancingLedge · 19/12/2017 23:04

and they died
Entirely fair and proportional reaction.

BackforGood · 19/12/2017 23:15

So, those of you being disturbed, why don't you have decent thickness / lined curtains (or blinds) ?
If the amount of light from some Christmas lights across the street bother you, then surely the sun rising in the early hours in the Summer months must keep you awake too ? Confused
