To view friend in a different light

I have a new friend. Someone I'm actually able to have a proper conversation with as I'm usually massively antisocial. It's been great to have someone with the same thoughts and views.

The other day I was found for a cup of tea and the kids were playing and I made a comment about something new of hers and asked her where she got it. She replied with the place and price and then said 'well if I had paid for it' I made a comment about vouchers or something and she replied that she had just forgotten to pay and then didn't bother going back in when she realised.

I don't know why but it's really playing on my mind. Maybe some people wouldn't consider it a big deal but it's just changed the way I feel about her and I'm sort of disappointed.

I am more than happy to be told I am being unreasonable!

Pride in an accidental theft is the red flag. The correct reaction would be shame.

I assume sweetybumps the screamer won't mind if she gets burgled then?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 18/12/2017 19:20

I find it odd that she told you she hasn’t paid for it. I mean she could have just told you where it was from and the cost.

Sounds like she wanted to alarm you.

FlissMumsnet · 18/12/2017 19:25

Well.....things took a rather unwelcome unexpected turn there for a moment.

Glad to see we're back on track now and auriofthemoon, we'd love to know how you cook okra; we can't ever make it taste good....Blush

auriofthemoon · 18/12/2017 19:25

It really wasn't like she was bragging. It was a very matter of fact 'i didn't realise until I was back at the car and the kid was screaming so I went home'

Make of that what you will but it wasn't like she said 'hey hey look at my new thing. I stole it. How hilarious am I'

Oh come off it, I didn't feel shame when I accidentally took that wrapping paper. I felt "whoops". Do you expect people to feel shame days later? Bloody hate the self flagellation and guilt we're all meant to feel.

Neiflette · 18/12/2017 19:33

aurio

Might have to try an okra recipe then! But I'll pay for it this time Blush

Wineandpyjamas · 18/12/2017 19:34

@Neiflette - my toddler did the same in Waterstones! Was paying at till, she was in buggy and as we got out onto pavement I realised she was clutching a little £2.50 odd till item that she'd obviously grabbed from the rack near tills (forget what it was, probably as useless as okra Wink) I obviously nipped back in and handed it back (Cashier was totally unbothered) but did make me laugh that my 2 year old had unintentionally shoplifted. OP, I think you're right to feel a bit uncomfortable initially but if it turns out to be a genuine one off mistake I wouldn't throw away what could be a really good friendship.

TheNoseyProject · 18/12/2017 19:45

I couldn’t get that wound up about it. If she’d been boasting that’d be different but it sounds like a genuine accident rather than the first steps towards being a master criminal. My gran managed to walk out of tesco with a shower gel hooked to the back of her! How no one noticed I don’t know. She was v embarrassed!

Talk about a pack of drama queens

mummypleeeaaaasseeee · 18/12/2017 20:37

I does sound like a genuine accident, although she could have gone back of course but sometimes we make mistakes

I have done both actually
Have walked out of Tesco paid for my shopping but had a whole chicken in a little plastic bag hanging from buggyBlush I didn't go back

Just recently when Christmas shopping bought a handbag for my mum (over £100)
And a few small items the sales assistant scanned the small stuff but not the handbag, i paid and whilst walking away I started to look at the receipt , realising the mistake went back (although admittedly it crossed my mind that I could just leave but really i just couldn't, maybe different if i was home already)
Also rushed back to pay for £8 pyjamas at m&s
I really forget a lot!BlushHmm
