Aibu unreasonable to expect more than a 20% off next purchase?

Hi all

Just wondered if you could help me manage my expectations here.

Bought a coat for my daughter amount other things at a retail outlet and spent £650 there in total.

Got home and the coat still has the security tag on which I can’t remove as it looks like one of those ones with dye in to prevent shoplifting.

Called store and they did apologise and offer 20% off my next purchase.

For me to return to this store to get the tag removed (this is the nearest outlet of this brand to me) its a £25 round trip for petrol and tunnel charges.

Am I unreasonable in expecting a voucher for cover the cost of my out of pocket as I am not likely to buy anything else there any time in the near future, given how much I’ve just bought there last weekend.

I’d have to spend another £100 to redeem what I’ve incurred which I don’t want to do.

What do others think?

Cheers

I think a voucher would be far or a partial refund.

Animation86 · 18/12/2017 16:31

So you only were offered 20% off a £100 purchase? (in reality they are just gonna get another sale out of you ) And they expect to you go back at your expense?

Take the receipt and the coat to your nearest retail park. See if any of the shops there will remove the tag.

Toblernone · 18/12/2017 16:35

Could you go to a similar type of shop nearer to you that's likely to be able to take the tag off?

Medeci · 18/12/2017 16:39

YABU.
I did something similar once, got home and found security tag still on. It never occured to me to expect any kind of compensation.
I blamed myself for not checking for tag when I was at the shop.

Wolfiefan · 18/12/2017 16:40

It wouldn't occur to me to expect compensation.

thegoodnameshadgone · 18/12/2017 16:48

Normally i wouldn’t expect anything either I am just annoyed that I will have to go back and be out of pocket for the inconvenience. If it was local to me i wouldn’t be bothered but this is not local. Ball ache going the first time will no doubt be the same this week.

We had the same thing happen with a tag left on the clothes, and when’s we next got to the shop a week or two later, they’d completely closed the shop. We went into topshop opposite with the receipt and luckily their tag remover worked on it. Since the dye ones are quite common, would it be easier to see if a closer store would do it for you?

DieSchottin93 · 18/12/2017 16:54

Do you have a big Tesco/Asda or similar nearby that you can go to and see if they'll remove it for you?

thegoodnameshadgone · 18/12/2017 16:59

Yes thank you I will take it the big Asda tomorrow and see if they will help. Good ideas about other shops removing the tags is just assumed they wouldn’t but worth asking Smile

Agree with posters who say take it to any shop, with the receipt.
If there is a branch of the same chain locally, try them first.
20% off next purchase is useless really.

AdidasGirl · 18/12/2017 17:05

I've had this before and I simply took the jacket and my receipt along with an email from the place I purchased and went into a shop I knew had the same tags.Showed them the coat, receipt and email and they removed it for me.

Petalflowers · 18/12/2017 17:08

Other shops may not take the tag off because they may assume you have stolen it. Take the receipt with you.

Ceto · 18/12/2017 17:12

If you can't get another shop to help, point out to the original shop that they had a duty by law to ensure the goods they sell are fit for purpose, a coat with a security tag is not fit for purpose, therefore you expect them to compensate you in full for your time and expenses in returning to the shop; alternatively they can arrange a courier to collect the coat and then return it to you once they've sorted it out.

packofshunts · 18/12/2017 17:15

I had this with a security tag left in a pair of Levi's. When I contacted the store I was told to just take them to any random shop and ask them to take tag out Hmm

When I refused and said it was their responsibility they told me to come back into store (50 mile round trip). I asked about reimbursement petrol/parking etc but nothing; not even a discount voucher. No apology either.

At this point I was so incensed I emailed head office to complain about crap customer service. I was refunded full amount of jeans and given a 50% voucher!

So go higher if need be, it does pay off.

thegoodnameshadgone · 18/12/2017 17:21

I did email the head office this afternoon and I have just seen this response in my emails.

Did you explain to them how much it would cost you to go back? YANBU to expect fair compensation-they didn't do their job properly and now you have to suffer for it.

packofshunts · 18/12/2017 17:25

Proper brush off!

EmilyChambers79 · 18/12/2017 17:25

Search you tube for ways of getting the tag off.

I'm sure the liquid ones involved a freezer..

Seasonseatings · 18/12/2017 17:26

I managed to get tags removed in a nearby (other brand entirely) store with a receipt and smile before now.

EleanorXx · 18/12/2017 17:38

Yabu you don't need compensation

thegoodnameshadgone · 18/12/2017 17:41

I thought it was a brush off too. I’ve emailed back and asked for the contact details of the department it’s been forwarded on to.

OP posts:
thegoodnameshadgone · 18/12/2017 17:43

Eleanor - I’m not after compensation. I don’t see why I should be out of pocket for their mistake.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 18/12/2017 17:45

But you can afford over £600 shopping spree. Seriously. Chalk it up to experience and check in future.

packofshunts · 18/12/2017 17:48

Doesn't matter how much she spent!

It's poor customer service and should be rectified
