AIBU to wonder why they have killed off Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi?
I've always loved the Star Wars movies but this current one is very weak on all fronts.
Why don't they draw a line under the whole thing and move on?

OP posts:
sagamartha · 18/12/2017 15:44

Did anyone 'have a bad feeling about this' in the film?

c3pu · 18/12/2017 15:45

Saw it yesterday.

I didn't mind the Porgs too much. Apparently the island is infested with puffins in real life, so the porgs were CGI'd in to replace them.

Leia could have done with being snuffed out in the explosion, rather than lingering on. Instead of the Mary poppins moment, maybe a quick "force connection" moment with Luke or something else.

Don't get me started on the "bomber" moment on the Dreadnought. THATS NOT HOW GRAVITY WORKS. YOU DON'T BOMB SHIT IN SPACE WITH GRAVITY DROPPED BOMBS FFS. YOU USE PROTON TORPEDOS!!! THIS HAS BEEN WELL ESTABLISHED.

The ground assault on the white planet was a bit too Empire Strikes Back, but not as much as Force Awakens was to A New Hope.

Should have done a bit more with Skywalker really. He was a shadow of his former self, and didn't really manage to redeem himself in the end either. Should have taught Rey a bit more. And probably told her to use a double ended lightsabre, like Darth Maul.

Yoda should have given Luke a right dressing down.

And who are Rey's parents? There's more to come on that front I'm sure.

Worth a watch, better than 1 2 & 3, but perhaps not as impactful as 7.

Also, we need some bloody backstory on the rise of Snoke/First order, and the downfall of the new republic.

AlpacaPicnic · 18/12/2017 15:48

I thought that Kylo should have 'forced' Leia back to the ship... And I bloody loved the porgs!

Mandalorian · 18/12/2017 15:51

And who are Rey's parents?

That was answered, drunken junk dealers who sold her on Jakku. Sadly I don't believe there is any more to it than that. I guess it's supposed to demonstrate that anyone can be a Jedi.

sagamartha · 18/12/2017 15:57

Those bombers were a bit slow.

araiwa · 18/12/2017 16:15

Could have done with being an hour shorter

It got very boring and plodded along too often

The jokes were forced , tedious and didnt fit

All the fights were dull apart from the one at the start

c3pu · 18/12/2017 16:22

That was answered, drunken junk dealers who sold her on Jakku. Sadly I don't believe there is any more to it than that. I guess it's supposed to demonstrate that anyone can be a Jedi.

Answered, yes. But was it a truthful answer? It came from Kylo Ren, hardly known for being truthful and virtuous... He said it a bit quickly if you ask me.

We shall see.

Anymajordude · 18/12/2017 18:31

I don't know if Kylo Re was telling the truth. She'll either be daughter of a main character and Ren is lying or she's a nobody with strong powers. The little kid at the end points to the latter.

Valerrie · 18/12/2017 19:36

Those are all Funkos. Pointless dust gathering bits of plastic. I wanted a plush one.

We don't have a Toys R Us locally.

Valerrie · 18/12/2017 19:36

Oh and they added something for me. Not everyone is the same.

Boulshired · 18/12/2017 19:47

Annoyed me, Kylo is the new Vader who kills teacher Luke in the same way Vader killed obi wan. Ray is the new Luke and Finn the new Hans the only one missing is the new princess Leah. New bloody script needed.

placebobebo · 18/12/2017 22:03

I don't think Kylo is the new Vader at all. Kylo has gone into this with his eyes open and is much more aware than Vader was. Vader only turned to gain power from the dark side to stop his world changing and then got drunk on it. Kylo has always sought power. Kylo I think won't be as pathetic a character as Vader, chained by his previous choices and hobbled by his master. He will be someone who will have some moments of kindness and compassion, but won't let that alter his ambitions and path. he won't be redeemed because he is happy with his choices and he doesn't want to be. Vader thought he was trapped, Kylo knows he isn't.
I think this trilogy is going to end with the establishment of a new order that accept the world is shades of grey, there is darkness and light in all of us and we must learn to strike a balance we are happy with, within ourselves and that will be on a sliding scale from dark to light.
The force was never out of balance, the people able to tap into it were.

sagamartha · 18/12/2017 22:06

The rebels really need to work on their communication. Saves misunderstanding.

nooka · 18/12/2017 22:12

After watching the Last Jedi we found ourselves not really caring how this trilogy ends, and dreading whatever shit will be made for the next trilogy which Rian Johnson has apparently been given. Go butcher more of the Star Wars universe Rian. Go you!

I don't care that they bumped off Luke. I do care that they trashed his character first. I wouldn't have minded a dark side Luke if it was well done, but a momentarily evil Luke thinking about killing his nephew followed by 20 years of guilty sulking was massively out of character. Luke in 6 was something very special. Luke in 8 was utterly forgettable.

sailorcherries · 18/12/2017 22:22

I left utterly disappointed. I agree with it being a filler movie.

I also hope that Rey turns out to be Kylo's sibling. Leia gave her up to resistance fighters after Ben became Kylo in order to protect her, which is why their minds connected after Snoke died.
Or Rey escaped the slaughter by Kylo as a child and blocked it out.

SlatternIsTrying · 18/12/2017 23:09

I liked it. It wasn't perfect but it was still better than most films out there.

I thought the relationship (whatever that may be) between Kylo and Rey was beautifully handled.

lostincumbria · 18/12/2017 23:54

Oh the whining is strong with this lot. It's great - too long - but great.

FreeNiki · 18/12/2017 23:57

Spoiler warning isnt good enough.

I clicked on it before appreciating the spoiler warning was in the first line.

Thanks a mother fucking lot op.

Valerrie · 19/12/2017 11:23

People moaning about spoilers on a Star Wars post. Why click it then?!

Labyrinthian · 19/12/2017 11:29

I thought it was great.

And porgs are cute - and the island is actually Skellig Michael off south west of Ireland, and it's amazing in real life and has lots of puffins who ground nest there - and I think that's what the porgs are based on.

Polarbearflavour · 19/12/2017 12:22

It went on for FAR too long!

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 19/12/2017 12:50

Mandalorian and c3pu have nailed it for me.

I was very disappointed given I've been following this story for 40 bloody years.

I couldn't keep track of who everyone was and we seemed to be missing large bits of plot. God knows why Luke had to have a personality transplant. I'm hoping it makes more sense when I see it again tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath.

sailorcherries · 19/12/2017 13:45

I think his personality transplant was caused by thinking he had let the dark side in when he thought about killing Kylo. Knowing how this affected his own father and then seeing another relative succumb it possibly troubled him and made him shut off from fear.
He also realised he wasn't this inherently good 'hero' and had to accept that light and dark are in everyone.

nooka · 19/12/2017 20:47

I'm afraid I think that the personality transplant was caused by poor writing and lack of care about the source materials. Luke would have had to have had a character transplant to even have thought about killing Kylo.

It's not in the least credible that someone driven by love - the whole point of the Return of the Jedi was that Luke put the love of his friends and his hope that Vader wasn't really lost to the dark side above the advice of Yoda and Obi Wan and that he was right to do so - would have looked at a child and thought about killing him, especially as he hadn't even done anything particularly bad at that point (as far as we know).

Luke is able to see the good in Vader even though he knew his history (bearing in mind that Vader had done many many terrible things by then and was fully committed to the dark side). He certainly would have seen the good in Ben Solo, plus Ben was a child and the son of his best friend and twin sister. There is no way he would have taken up a weapon against him, especially while Ben was asleep unless he himself turned to the dark side (a perfectly possible plot line, but not one explored in the Last Jedi).

He knew perfectly well that there was no absolute dark/light as again that's a core part of the plot of the original films.

WhooooAmI24601 · 19/12/2017 21:01

I'm relatively new to the Star Wars thing because of some sort of deprived childhood and only learned about it via the 12 year old (who is obsessed to the point of madness) and now the 6 year old (who is equally thrilled). However, the little moment at the end with the boy and the broom made me squeak because I noticed that it moved into his hand rather than him picking it up and I UNDERSTOOD WHAT IT MEANT! Which in the Whoo family is a big deal. And I loved it.
