I knocked my nail off a few days ago and it's suddenly gone funny today Sad

Please beware, picture of gross toe

I've been walking lopsided at work and it's hurting my back as well ( Grin must be getting old) and hurts like buggery

I have attached a picture of my toe

Please can someone suggest ways I can make this less painful?

I have a doctors appointment for Monday the 18th, I can't cope with that for five more days!! Confused

mostlikelyanunpopularviewpoint · 14/12/2017 00:23

Id say goodbye to the rest of your toenail.

Toes are a bugger. I played in a charity football tournament once and no one told me that you kick the ball with the side of your foot. Preceded to break one big toe and severly bruise the other.

If its a break docs wont do anything but maybe tap it to your other toe.

Littlebatcalledlucille · 14/12/2017 00:25

OK on behalf of all sporners.

Pop it. Honestly. It will take some of the pressure/pain off, sod walking about in agony like that Sad

OwtFerNowt · 14/12/2017 00:26

It looks infected. I think you should try for an earlier appointment. Or go to a private podiatrist if you can afford to pay.

BritInUS1 · 14/12/2017 00:26

What bit of it is sore? Is the actual toe joint sore or is the pain coming from the side that is showing the swelling?

iknowimcoming · 14/12/2017 00:26

Ouch - looks really sore, do you have a minor injuries or walk in clinic near you, or is there a practise nurse at your surgery who you could see sooner? If not I'd say casualty/a&e if you can't walk properly - good luck Thanks

user1469751309 · 14/12/2017 00:28

I'd have a VERY large glass of something stronger than tea pop a needle in boiling water for a few mins and pop the bugger. It looks so painful OP

mostlikelyanunpopularviewpoint · 14/12/2017 00:28

It hurts where the swelling is, like a large blister. It feels like fire if I gently touch it

I can't afford a private appointment sadly

Thank you for the sympathy!

My family think I'm an idiot for trapping my toe under a door Grin

It's infected! You need to go to a walk Hmm in tomorrow. You need antibiotics and/or some of the pus releasing. The redness is the infection tracking down your toe.
Please go first thing.

Moanyoldcow · 14/12/2017 00:30

That's infected. You need to get to a walk in centre and get some antibiotics.

Poor thing - looks very sore.

Moanyoldcow · 14/12/2017 00:31

Cross post Feral!

FeralBeryl · 14/12/2017 00:31

Oh and stop putting anything on it too. Wash gently in plain water then keep clean and dry until it's seen Thanks

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 14/12/2017 00:32

You can't wait until Monday - this is serious and could turn dangerous really fast.

You need to go to your nearest walk in centre at the first available opportunity.

SeaToSki · 14/12/2017 00:32

It looks like you have a little infection along the side of the nail bed, very common. If you can stand it, sterilise a needle in a flame and then poke a hole in the area, try and squeeze out some fluid/puss then soak in crazy hot, very salty water for 5 mins, then dry, slather in savlon and cover for the night. Repeat in the morning if necessary. If the red inflamed area starts moving up your toe towards the foot, get to the doctors that day as the infection is spreading and that is serious.

mostlikelyanunpopularviewpoint · 14/12/2017 00:32

I have work 8-6 tomorrow, is this a good enough reason to miss the morning off working and go to a walk in?

I fear it won't get any better as my job is very active and on my feet all day!

OP posts:
FeralBeryl · 14/12/2017 00:35

Yes! Please don't attempt any DIY - the infection is already travelling down your toe. That ship has sailed.
Don't go to work, you NEED antibiotics.

mostlikelyanunpopularviewpoint · 14/12/2017 00:36

It hurts too much to attempt any DIY anyway, but I think working this evening has just made it worse and I should have gone this morning Blush

OP posts:
WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 14/12/2017 00:39

You shouldn't go to work like that; it will only get worse. You need to go to the walk in asap and get it properly seen to; have proper medical advice.

Do not attempt the DIY some posters are incorrectly suggesting!

FeralBeryl · 14/12/2017 00:43

Take some painkillers, if you have a cool pack or bag of peas (or stick some crushed ice in a butty bag) and wrap it around. Don't stick any plaster/tape on it. If you have some gauze that would be best, if not, cotton wool.
Do not stuff it in to a shoe tomorrow, flip flop and honestly straight to the walk in. If you can't get to one or an out of hours GP, this would honestly warrant a trip to A and E. The infection has already spread - you don't want your whole foot affected.

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/12/2017 00:43

Can you get to a pharmacy?

tampinfuminragin · 14/12/2017 00:44

Epsom salt foot bath with tea tree and slather in magnesium sulphate paste and cover. The mag sulph paste will get it to pop by itself while the Epsom salts help with the swelling.

Pandoraphile · 14/12/2017 00:52

I had that back in April. It's called paronychia and I needed abs to shift it. I did pop it a day or so later and the amount of gunk that came out was disappointing!!

letthesunshineeveryday · 14/12/2017 00:53

It is a paronychia. It needs lanced and you need antibiotics. You need to go to a minor injuries unit or A&E
